The Hut is ideally located on the Phibsbro’ crossroads and is an old lads pub and has characters in spades, bar staff alone are 5⁄5 and if ur watching the footy the TV is HD and perfect sound, the pint is cheap and the toilets are clean.

I love Mohan’s. It has a friendly atmosphere and is child-friendly during the day. I’ve been there both in the daytime and during prime drinking time and have never had a problem finding a place to sit. When they’re serving food, it’s very reasonably priced and good. When they’re not, they usually allow you to bring in food from other places.

I haven’t been to the Hut in a while, so when we returned after years of absence for a Saturday night swifty, we naturally headed into the bar. Things had changed. Whereas I remember a mixed, friendly crowd, the patrons we were greeted by were, not to put too fine a point on it, men. Manly men. I was the only woman and, from the looks I was getting from the mid-to-aul’ fellas at the bar, that was one too many. We repaired to the lounge next door, which is less salubrious in décor but has a much more relaxed atmosphere.

The Hut — also known as Mohans — is a real regulars’/old man’s pub. If you’ve not been there before the punters inside tend to stare at your new face as you enter! I’ve hung out there quite a bit over the years so I think I’m recognised now. Although the last time I popped in with a friend of mine we were the only females in the whole place, so the stares came anyway. There are three sections to choose from and I tend to stick with the front part where the high bar stools are. The drink is fairly cheap and the Guinness is great, as is the service — really friendly barmen on hand to tend to your every need. The guy that was working the night my friend and I were the only ladies in the building was particularly attentive — no doubt he was delighted for a bit of non-male custom! If you’re a smoker The Hut is not ideal as the only place to go is out onto the street. But plenty of characters are always going in and out the door puffing away so at least if you have to head outside you’ll have more than enough interesting company!
