So the weather has turned wet and windy, and picnic season seems very far away. But when it comes back, Belgrave Square is a really handy spot. Less than 5 minutes from Rathmines Road and Ranelagh triangle, you have a load of options for lunch and then this lovely park to relax in.

One of the things I love about Rathmines is that for all its hustle and bustle, you’re never more than the turning of a corner from peace and quiet. And so it is when you walk past the Swan Centre and take a left up Castlewood Avenue to Belgrave Square: a little oasis of calm. Not that we’ve had too many sunny days in the last few months, I’ve been down this direction in a past life for a meeting and marvelled at this little gem. There’s even a children’s playground at one end. That could keep any kids occupied as well :)

This is such a beautiful park right in the middle of a lovely square. I can see Wilde and the like sitting on a bench and taking in the air before putting pen to paper, whether they did or not! It feels steeped in history and the trees could tell some stories!

Lovely place for a picnic! Good mix of sunny and shady spots in a small somewhat secluded setting that’s never overcrowded. About a 10 min walk from Canal area and close enough to Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Superquinn, etc. if you want to pack your hamper for a relaxing afternoon. As other reviews note, you really get a feel for the Georgian area here. Enjoy!

Belgrave Square is one of the many green spaces that make Rathmines, and the southern suburbs of Dublin, an excellent place to live. The park itself is relatively small, but it provides a very welcome break from the monotony of your usual suburbian street and has greatly increased the market value of the houses facing the square(lucky homeowners!) The square is never overrun by people, as is sometimes the case in other Dublin parks, so it is a great place to escape for a lie in the sun(if the sun is ever out, that is!) There is a pretty decent children’s playground here, so Belgrave Square is very popular with mother’s clubs and the kiddies. There are also two Indian guys who go running here every day, around and around the track. To me it seems like they’re always there, running around the park. I’m not sure if they ever have a break. Look out for them next time you’re in the area and let me know if you see them. They must be pretty fit!

Dublin’s Georgian set-pieces are rightly lauded as some of the central city’s best spaces, but their Victorian successors shouldn’t be overlooked. Located just off Rathmines Road, this park has the very definite feel of being the common garden of the surrounding houses of the square, which is, of course, exactly the purpose of the green spaces in all of Dublin’s squares. Don’t let that put you off, though; the park has been open to all, residents or otherwise, for over 30 years. There’s a children’s playground to keep the kids occupied, and tree-sheltered corners to just relax, virtually undisturbed by the traffic.
