Running fantastic deal € 8.99 for New Rental + ice-cream + big bar chocolate If you get«recent rental» + tub ice-cream its € 9.50 Understand they want to flog new rentals but seems really odd won’t extend deal to films over 5 weeks old? An average DVD rental shop but this has really put me off going back

Xtra-Vision for all intents and purposes should be extinct by now. The flurry of illegal downloading sites and netflix and other legal renting sites should have buried Xtra Vision in a shallow, watery grave. But it hasn’t died, and that says a lot about Xtra-Vision. They have a lot of exclusives and Irish features, as well as pretty competitive rates on second hand dvd’s and games. Yet it still costs about a fiver for a new release. Which I can’t really justify when you can buy an(almost) new release for that price in HMV. So if you believe in ‘supporting the industry’ or are just too lazy to wait, head on to Xtra-Vision. At least it’s better than Chartbusters…

A handy stop for DVD or game rental. Xtra-vision have diversified their products and so stock less of each. However they usually stock enough new release material and enough of a backlog to keep most mainstream users happy. And I’ve often found supercheap games there. So why the bad rating… well this branch loses about two stars for an atrocious customer service incident I had with them, which dragged out for months… it went something like this: I rented a DVD, I returned said DVD, while returning said DVD I rented another one which I subsequently returned. Perhaps a month later I was called and asked to return the first DVD. I was, of course, bemused and told them I had returned it. Not only that but I vividly remember the day and time I returned it, and what other DVD I rented at the same time, and that I had handed it to a person, rather than the drop box. This seemed to satisfy them or so I thought. Pop forward a couple of months and I wander down to rent something else, only to be told I owe 25 euro. Shocked, I ask what it’s for and I’m told that it is the DVD which was referred to in the previous phone call. I asked for the manager who was not available. It seemed that nothing could be done for me, but I was not paying this money. In the end I wrote a letter to the store and Xtravision HQ outlining the problem. Specifically telling them the day and approximate time I had returned the DVD(with witnesses) and surely that they should have some record of me taking out the other one. Eventually some smart person thought of looking at the CCTV footage which showed me returning the offending DVD, and the took the fine off my account. I was appalled at the whole thing and their charging of this fine without notification, and by the lengths I had to go to get it removed. I’m sorry Xtravision Rathmines, you lose two stars for that one!

I live in a house with no telly. I know, in this day and age! Thus, the internet has become our new best friend, where a world of films and tv series are at our downloading fingertips. I always find it pretty tough handing over more than a fiver for a one night DVD rental. I can get books on loan for weeks from the library for free(and a very limited selection of films), so I have never been able to fathom how video shops can justify charging so much. Especially as places like HMV are now selling a really good selection of brand new DVDs for only a little more. Anyway, the reason I like Xtra-Vision in Rathmines is that it has great offers like 5 old releases for 5 nights for 5 euro. The selection is much better than the branch in Sandymount where I used to live, and an «old» release seems to encompass anything from classics to drama and comedy, some less than 6 months old. This is an often-availed of deal in our household, so long may their offers continue.

I’ve always found this Xtra Vison in Rathmines to be really well stocked, with knowledgeable and helpful staff and they generally have most of what your looking for. The place has gotten a bit pokey in recent years as they’ve moved away from just DVD rental into pretty much selling everything home entertainment wise. Its not quite Laser in Ranelagh but doesn’t really claim to be. They do a huge range of games, DVD’s, some music and the previously viewed stock are a lot of times cheaper then to rent a movie at all. I especially like the TV Box sets for a week for € 10, cos you know you want to have a life and not be watching Dexter for 8 hours at a time.
