It’s been some time since I’ve reviewed this busy, and deservedly popular Sunday lunch place and we’ve been back a few times on Sunday’s since then. We have also recommended it to friends who also now happily also go from time to time. In my last review I was critical of what I’d described as the poor attitude of the staff member who served us then. I’m pleased to report two facts: firstly she is still there and secondly, like all the other staff, she’s mega friendly and properly focussed on the needs of customers from cheery welcomes to farewells. Maybe the day we first encountered her she was having an off day. It’s also clear that these hard — working people barely stop for breath going for hours. So back to the food. It’s a very good value for money three course lunch(€ 22.50) and food portions are generous. The soup starter choices are always first class but I wish they’d also offer wheaten type breads with soup rather than those anaemic doughy bread rolls that many places offer up for convenience. The smoke fish starter is usually very good but not as tasty this time as I remember it a few times before. I’m not a lover of chicken, but I’m a real fan of their southern fried chicken as its really tasty. Also their pepper sauce served with it is one of the best I’ve tasted in a very long time. Hate to admit it, but I could drink it but then I’ve always been a greedy pig. The root vegetables remain ace too. So to sum up, most of my criticisms are minor, me being my usual picky. It’s a darn good restaurant and competes very well against the strong competition in a 20 mile radius. An added bonus is the scenic drive to it and the setting which is a castle location. We’ll be back again.
