I’ve always been fascinated with aqueducts, especially the one that brings the Grand Canal over the River Liffey. And for years I have been meaning to find it and see the engineering feat that is bringing a channel of water over another channel of water. From the town on Sallins, you can get to the aqueduct by foot, by bike, by car, by boat or as we did, by kayak. As we headed west on the canal, we met a fork in the canal: left goes to Naas and right goes west to the Shannon. We headed right. My advice if you are on foot or bike, head west from Sallins on the north side of the canal to avoid a) the fork in the canal and b) avoid the narrow road that’s used by cars what seems an awful lot. Kayaking over the River Liffey in the Grand Canal felt quite good if I’m honest. We stopped up to take in the marvel that is the aqueduct. And to have lunch. Worth a look if you are in the area and it’s a nice day.
