Boffins have discovered the remains of(they believe) Ireland’s oldest bridge at Clonmacnoise. The early medieval wooden bridge spans the River Shannon just downstream of the ruins of the Monastry. Today, the bridge is completely submerged. Even though all that is visible of the bridge is an underwatre double row of eroded wooden posts, it’s still worth checking out. They estimate that it dates from around A.D. 804, and that the 533-foot-long, 17-foot-wide oak span structure suggests technical wizardry. We’re told that the Bridge’s size seems to suggest that the vikings and monks were very busy traders indeed. Along with the rest of Clonmacnoise, very cool indeed.
