Closer to 2.5 stars but since this place was my very first meal in Milan/Italy, I’ll cut them some slack. Before I even arrived in Italy, I already knew what I would order for my first meal. My favorite food — PIZZA, of course!(well, my fave food is a toss up between pizza and cheeseburgers but I won’t get into that right now) My friends and I had just arrived in Milan. We were on our way to do touristy things, when we figured we should probably go eat something, since the last meal we had was airplane food. Tired, jet lagged, and hungry, we stumbled into Bar Scorpion. The place was deserted, save for one table dining. But to be fair, it was a weird time — around 4 I think? The place was huge — two floors, so I“m guessing it does get busier during normal lunch and dinner times. So I ordered what I promised myself I would. PIZZA. I went with the pizza margherita because I wanted the most basic pizza there was. No frills, no thrills — just pizza. It was VERY different from the pizza I would get in NYC. 1. Pizza margherita in Italy does NOT mean sliced mozzarella. 2. The entire pizza is very thin, which makes the whole thing kind of soggy and hard to eat. I had to eat it with a fork and knife. 3. It was WAY salty. But if you think the pizza is salty, you have no idea what you’re in for when you order one of their pasta dishes. I tried a bite of my friend’s pasta carbonara and there was no flavor to it. Just salt. If you MUST come here, the pizza might just be the lesser of two evils. I wasn’t very happy with my first ‘authentic’ Italian pizza experience. Bar Scorpion actually left me craving NYC pizza.

Is it too cheesy if I say, ‘beware the sting of the scorpion’?! We were walking by in the morning looking for a cappuccino and croissant — a guy comes to the door to greet us and so we figure, ‘why not?’. We told him we wanted only a coffee and roll — no problem. We sit — I realize it’s more expensive. Elsewhere I’ve seen it’s 1.80 € instead of 1.50 € for a cappucino. No problem. Coffee was ok(except they put on chocolate without asking, which I hate). Pastries were fine. Nothing better or worse than we’ve had elsewhere in Milan. No problem. Here’s the part where they get dropped down to one star: the bill. Pastries were 2 € — no problem. Those coffees? The princely sum of seven euros. Each! Yes, 14 € for two cappucinos! PROBLEM! I considered arguing — but decided to chalk it up to a stupid tax(«hey they are stupid americans who pay 5 $ for a starbucks, they wont know any better) and to warn my fellow Unilocalers to take their coffee business elsewhere.
