Chinese Resto that calls itself Japanese — places like this bring shame to all Japanese places in Milan. Please, the locals of Milan, I know you can’t get Asian food here like you would in North America or asia but do not go here, the fish is definitely not fresh, a few of us had major stomach aches and overall just gross. This is NOT Japanese cuisine in any way.

Saien is clearly a Chinese joint that says it’s Japanese. Is that a problem? Yes, if you’re taking a date or doing a business meeting. Wouldn’t want acquaintances to know that you eat THIS in Milan, now would you? But if you’re looking for a quick lunch with large portions, low prices(€ 10 for combo meal: including salad, Miso soup, rice bowl, sushi, and fruit salad to finish), and decent quality, then this is your place. The restaurant is usually filled with students and young professionals from the area. Nothing special in terms of taste(on par with other mid-level Milanese sushi), but convenience and décor give it a solid 3 stars.

I’m a total fan. Since I’ve moved to Milan, Saien has become my new ‘Sushi Hook’(Sacramento, CA) and I’m glad I found it. The space is large and perfect, whether you’re going for lunch with a group of friends, a business meeting, or an evening date. It’s comfortable and offers a somewhat outdoor seating area that’s really nice during the sprint and summer(+1). I have yet to order something on their menu that I don’t like. I normally get the Maki Menu, but I’ve tried their Sashimi as well as their teriyaki menu both which left me satisfied. Their green tea gelato is pretty bomb!(+1) The service is very accommodating with menu changes(I’m allergic to shellfish and they never have a problem with my request). And it’s fast, if you need to have a quick lunch, they’ll get you in and out, but if you want to relax, they definitely won’t rush you(+1) The price is just right. I spend 11euros on the Maki/Sushi Menu and get a perfectly sized salad, miso soup, and two rolls of deliciousness as well as a fruit bowl. I always finish everything on my plate, but never feel as though I’ve over done it. As far as lunches go(especially between classes) this is perfect. A place that fills you up but doesn’t let you over do it.(+1) The only reason this place doesn’t get five stars is because they don’t have a Dragon Roll or Veggie Dragon roll or any other ridiculous deliciousness that has come out of the Californian Sushi cuisine that I love so much. Or perhaps I’m just not reading the menu correctly?
