Trattoria San Maurilio is snuggly located between Milan’s Duomo and the Pinacoteca San Ambrosian(the Ambrosian Library, aka art museum), but you wouldn’t know that from its relaxed atmosphere and good food. Eating in Centro Storico can be difficult, you don’t want to venture out too far from the main sites(especially if you’ve made a timed reservation somewhere), but you also don’t want to pack into the Times Square-esque tourist traps or grab your 100th slice of pizza. Trattoria San Maurilio to the rescue. Don’t get me wrong, this place definitely caters to tourists, but it does it in such a way that you don’t feel like you’re eating the McDonalds version of Italian food. The reasonably varied menu in both English and Italian offers quality choices for reasonable prices. Offerings are mainly pasta dishes, some upscale pizzas, and appetizers/antipasti. In my opinion you’d do well to stick with the main courses and water, the antipasti and wines seemed to trend boring and expensive. Dishes are perfectly portioned and should be filling for most American appetites. I had the pasta carbonara and thought it was delicious. Additional notes: Free WiFi, just ask your server for the code. Waiters speak both English and Italian. Bread is included in the meal, so no worries about unwanted extra costs for those on a budget. They accept reservations and can accommodate small groups.
