We asked our Roman friends to recommend a good spot for a hotel for our one week vacation in Rome, and Hotel Manfredi was their top suggestion. Located on a quiet back street just a short walk away from Plaza Spagna and the Rome Metro station, this was a great place to stay for a week with our family. Just make sure you understand that this is a boutique hotel with minimal services — we loved our apartment. Plenty of food and shopping close by, and easy access to most Rome tourist destinations. If we go back to Rome, we will absolutely return to Hotel Manfredi.

Location location… It is close to everything. We walked straight into the shopping and dining areas, hung out on the Spanish steps at night and it’s next to the subway. You can be at all the major tourist attractions in minutes via the subway or you can walk! That and it’s very good complimentary breakfast is the upsides. Downsides are the rooms are tiny! Two of us with a suitcase each was a squeeze. Because it’s all jammed in you can hear every conversation at the reception area. I’d stay there again but if I found a Motel in similar area with a larger room I’d take that first!

Pros: Location. 2 minutes from the Spanish Steps, 15 minutes from the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon. We walked everywhere, in fact — to the Vatican, the Colosseum, Trastevere — but then, we’re walkers. In any case, the location is great. Bonus: if you’re looking to drop some serious dough, the Via Dei Condotti, home to Chanel/Prada/Ferragamo/Fendi/D&G/etc./etc. is 2 streets away. The rooms are attractive(though small). 24-hour room service(or so they say; we didn’t order anything, so can’t attest to that personally). Cons: No hot water most mornings; shower was tepid at best, freezing at worst. Hotel staff is seemingly on the take from everyone — the restaurant to which they direct you for dinner, the cabs they call for you, and on and on. Granted, this is the norm in Rome(speaking of those cabs, beware of cabdrivers, who without fail pretend that the 20-Euro bill you handed them was a 5), but it’s galling to be scammed by the same smirking face every morning and evening. Upshot: If you’re ready for a little discomfort, both physical and emotional, in exchange for a pretty room in a great location, this is your spot. But brace yourself for the smarm and the scams.
