I was recently taken to The View by a friend who lives in Rome. This friend is a foodie of the first order, so I expected a fabulous experience. The restaurant is perched on one of the hills surrounding the city. It is located in one of the most upper class neighborhoods in Rome. We were seated on the terrace where the view of the city is spectacular. We were there in the evening and the lights of the city were beautiful. It is probably worth the dining experience to simply sit and gaze at the city. The food was really not very good and most certainly not worth the price. As a first course we ordered the Caprese Fritti. This is basically bufala mozzarella, a bit of tomato and a sliver of basil that is breaded and deep fat fried. It sounded interesting. It was, but it was not anything I would need to eat again. It reminded me of fair food. The cheese and tomato juice oozed out when I bit into it. It tasted like caprese, but hot and melty. I have decided that I definitely like my caprese at room temperature. For the pasta course, I had the bufala ricotta ravioli in a baked cherry tomato/spinach sauce. It was good, but not particularly remarkable. The meat course was a fillet of Danish beef with peppers. It was the most fatty, grisly and tough piece of meat I’ve ever tried to eat. Usually Danish beef is really good. This wasn’t. The wine was very good. I chalk this up more to my friend’s ability to choose wines rather than anything to do with the restaurant. Given my friend’s propensity know the great restaurants, I can only guess that this was an off night for The View. He was obviously irritated with the food and the service. So the bottom line is, go for the view and don’t order beef.
