Il Palio

Where to begin? Il Palio is a horse race which occurs twice a year, July 2^nd and August 16, and is a BIG deal for the Sienese. It is considered a city holiday where 99% of shops are closed so the residents can attend this event.
The origins of this race goes back to medieval times. The city center is called Piazza Del Campo and its cobble-​stone outer banks are covered in dirt for the horses to run on. The center is filled with spectators (lots and lots of crowded people in this standing room only space) which is free for you to view the race. If you want to spend some serious Euros you can opt for the VIP bleacher seating up against the buildings and businesses on the top floors of the Piazza Campo. Pony up the cash as the time from the opening ceremonies to the end of the race is roughly 3 ½ hours. I was so glad I did!
There are 17 Contrada (think of these as 17 neighborhoods within the city walls) which represent Siena. The race consists of only 10 Contrada which is determined this way; The seven contrada that did not take part in that month of the previous year are automatically included; three more are chosen by draw (twice a year, in the last days of May and at the beginning of July). The opening ceremonies spectacular as all the Contrada parade in authentic medieval period clothing and suits of armor. When the actual race begins jockeys ride bareback around the perimeter of the Piazza 3 times. the first «horse» to cross the finish line wins the race. I used quotations on horse to emphasize horse, as the rider need not be on it’s back to win the race.
The winning horse and rider are immediately engulfed with that corresponding Contada fans and are hailed as a national treasure. It truly is a sight to witness. I saw many people sucking on actual pacifiers and remarked to my friend who lives in Siena what that was all about; He said it symbolizes a rebirth for the Contade. In the evening there is a gigantic dinner held through out the city which is by invitation only.

Bereits seit dem Mittelalter messen sich zweimal jährlich (am 2. Juli und am 16. August) die 17 Stadtteile (Contraden) von Siena beim Palio. Für jedes Rennen werden zehn Contrade ausgewählt, so viele Tortenstücke kann man auch auf dem nachfolgenden Bild auf dem Piazza del Campo erkennen.
Die Bürger der 17 Stadtviertel tragen symbolische malerische Namen:

Geschätzte 60.000 Zuschauer verfolgen das Palio auf der Piazza di Campo mit starken Emotionen. Während des Palio ist die Piazza von Tribünen gesäumt, die eigens zu diesem Zweck errichtet werden. Innerhalb des Ringes, der die Piazza einschließt, wird gelbe Erde aufgeschüttet. Das Rennen dauert nur etwa 90 Sekunden, dabei muss der Platz dreimal umrundet werden. Bei dem gefährlichen Rennen kann kurioserweise auch eines der ungesattelten Pferde gewinnen, wenn es ohne den zu Sturz gekommenen Reiter ins Ziel galoppiert.
Vor dem Pferderennen holen sich die Reiter den Segen der Geistlichkeit. Der Preis für den Sieger ist der Schutz der Jungfrau Maria für sein Stadtviertel und erhält als Geschenk das sogenannte Palio (ein Stofftuch) mit dem Abbild der Jungfrau Maria, das von verschiedenen Künstlern angefertigt wird.
Zum Ärger der Stadtverwaltung ist dem traditionellen Pferderennen die Auszeichnung als Kulturerbe Italiens verweigert worden. Wie alle anderen Festlichkeiten, die mit Tieren abgehalten werden, ist die neue Auszeichnung vorenthalten worden. Auch in Italien lehnt es die Mehrheit der Bevölkerung ab, dass Tiere zur Unterhaltung sterben. Angeblich sind bei den Palio-​Rennen, bei dem es ausdrücklich erlaubt ist, das eigene Pferd, andere Pferde und ihre Reiter zu schlagen, seit dem Jahre 1970 insgesamt 49 Tiere gestorben. Da dreht es jedem Tierfreund den Magen um.

I was lucky to have stayed in Sienna for 1 month in August so I was able to attend the Palio dell’Assunta which is held on August 16, in honour of the Assumption of Mary.
Il Patio does held twice a year at Piazza del Campo one in July and one in August.
10 contrades out of the 17 will enter into the race which last less than 2 minutes. Don’t hold your breath, it finished so fast before you realized it started.
The Town Square just filled with this energy before the race, arrive a little early if you want to get a spot. but trust me, doesn’t matter where you are, you cannot really see much… because it is so crowded!
Personally I enjoyed the pre and the post race celebrations a lot more, just go around the different contrades and of course after the race to the winner for a great celebrations!
Just imagine the first modern II Patio was held 1656. over 350 years ago… the tradition even dated back to the Medieval time.
