Super-cute and crafty with delicious curries, donburi, and puddings. We had just checked into our lodgings and decided to seek out something quick to eat that wasn’t McDonald’s or 7 – 11 meals. We spotted Fujiyamapurin on Unilocal, and decided to give it a go. The storefront is incredibly cute, cozy, and welcoming. Upon entering, you’re confronted with crafts of various sorts, a counter with mouth-watering sweets, and a generally crafty-without-being-kitschy interior with all kinds of mismatched wood furniture. There’s no English menu, and the staff is not familiar with it, but if you’re familiar with Katakana, you can get by, as most of the dishes are named for loan-words. The truly adventurous can select a page with what appear to be entrees and just point; you’ll probably get something good. We both decided on beer(Orion, nothing fancy) and I got the chicken curry, while my girlfriend got the taco don at my insistence. The waitress brought my beer, but neglected to bring the other one, but I blame that more on my incompetence with the Japanese language than anything. The food came out shortly after. The chicken curry was good; everything you expect from a Japanese curry. It appeared to be grilled, baked, or otherwise not-fried chicken. If I did have one complaint about it, it’s that there was very little chicken in it; only about 5 bits. The taste, however, did make up for that, and I certainly didn’t leave hungry. The taco don was quite delicious as well. I had only a small bite, but it was bursting with the flavor you very much do not expect from a Mexican taco, but is right at home in Japanese タコズ. In the words of my girlfriend«It was very flavorful. I really liked the egg on top, and it was the perfect portion.» A jar of pickles was split between us, and consisted of cucumber, carrot, daikon, tiny mushroom, some kinda red thing, and something that looked a bit like a caper. The pickles were all done quite well, with an adequate crunch and an abundance of flavor. The kind of pickle that you would feel bad about eating in your underwear standing in front of the fridge at three in the morning, because they’re so fancy, but are too good to put down. After being stared at in the face by the various dessert options, we decided to get some pudding to go, and some pound cake for the tomorrow morning. The pudding was distinct, and I appreciate the effort toward unique flavors. If I had any complaint, it’d be that the flavors can be perhaps too subtle, and can get lost if you’ve had anything flavorful(say, a big plate of curry) shortly prior. Overall, I was quite impressed with the unique and comfortable atmosphere of the restaurant, and the high quality of the food. I certainly would like to come back to try a larger sampling of their enormous menu.
