A great place entertain and experience traditional Japanese cuisine with a contemporary twist. The food and service is top-notch, thus a little on the expensive side. Highly recommend to make reservations as it is often fully booked even on weeknights. It’s a little hard to find, and you need to be super quiet in the evenings to keep the peace with the surrounding residences.

Mame-cha is located in a narrow, quiet alley away from the bustle of Gion Corner and surrounding temples. It is a five minute walk from Kodai-ji Temple and Gion Corner. I would recommend making reservations, especially with parties of 2 or more. I was lucky enough to get a seat but only because I got there at 5:30pm and I was traveling alone. I ordered the set dinner course for 3,241 yen and a glass of sake for 680 yen. The set course consisted of Obanzai dishes(traditional home-style cooking of Kyoto) — with fresh and local vegetables, sashimi, tempura, and their famous egg soufflé soup(think egg foam in a light tomato based soup), sweet potato dessert, and fresh green tea. The food was delicious and fresh, but I wouldn’t say it was very unique, besides the egg soufflé. It’s simple and traditional food in a lovely setting. A great place for a quiet, pleasant meal.
