Yummy. I thought pasta is supposed to taste a bit better in the U.S. than Japan??? :) I have to say though, it was probably one of the best cheaper pasta dishes I have ever eaten. Ordering can be quite challenging mainly because of the vast amount of choices of spaghetti you can choose from. There are Japanese inspired tastes, such as tarako(fish egg roe), and natto spaghetti. For those who prefer more of a western taste, there are simple choices, such as eggplant, vegetable, meat, and tomato based spaghetti. You can also choose the amount of serving you prefer, S(100g), M(120g), or L(170g), and for these 3 sizes, there are no extra charges. You can also do oomori(LL) for an extra charge if you are really hungry, or just eat a lot. All basic orders come with a small wafu-style soup served in a tea cup. I always order the Kanjuku tomato&niniku arabiatta spa(I believe that is #34 for ¥840 on the menu if all menus at all the branches are the same!). Although simple, this dish never disappoints! Tomatoes are simmered until they are soft, and the sauce is simmered and served with the right consistency. Pasta noodles are also served very hot, and the whole combination is great. Highly recommended! My only complaint is the sporadic customer service. Sometimes, the staff are very good with their water refills, and general service, and other times, especially during rush hour… it can be poor. Sometimes it takes a long time for the food to come out, and it is frustrating especially if you only have a short lunch break! Maybe I should recommend coming after work or when time isn’t an issue.

Spajiro is a reliable chain restaurant option that serves Japanese spaghetti. The large menu offers many combinations of toppings and sauces, such as kinoko, enoki, shimeji, mentaiko, natto, bacon, basil, eggplant, ground meat, cheese, and more. Small, medium, and large portions of noodles all cost the same price. A drawback of this particular location is that smoking is allowed inside and that the space is not that big.

Why is Italian food so good in Japan? This chain was no exception. We had the spaghetti that was simply noodles + sauce + eggplant. I generally don’t like meat-less spaghetti in the States but I’m rethinking that now… We also tried the«mentaiko,» a spicy cod roe pasta. Creamy and delicious, although I think I favor the spaghetti just a bit more. They offer different sizes, small/medium/large, but all for the same price. So there’s no reason not to stuff your belly full of pasta :)
