Former Yokohama Settlement No. 91 Wall Ruins

If you’re looking for remnants of the old foreign settlements in Yokohama, here’s a cool one – or just an old wall. You decide. Sadly the explanation is only in Japanese. Roughly translated, the core of the description explains that the land is the site of Yamashitacho No. 91 in the old foreign settlement, which used to be on the southern edge of the settlement. «From 1870 to 1872, then 1875 to 1965 (around 90 years) this was the site of Italian exporter of silkworm eggs and raw silk, G.O. Dell’Oro. Dell’Oro came from Milan in 1868 – Meiji 1 – and set up shop, mainly dealing in silk. It was the oldest and longest running foreign business in Yokohama. The wall is made from brick and stone … stone on the bottom part and brick above … and gives a special taste of former settlement structures… [as] the only [remaining] structural exterior from the former foreign settlement.» Many bricks from the early Meiji era were also discovered on this site.
