I’ve been a fan of the Akita sushi brand for quite some time. For an AYCE spot you pay a little more than the norm($ 22.99 for dinner on a Friday) but I feel like the price is reflected in the quality. My true north with any AYCE sushi spot is the selection, size and freshness of their sashimi/sushi. I feel this is most reflective of the quality you of the overall meal. Akita does not disappoint. Coming in after the gym tonight flying solo I was more than happy to walk into a near empty restaurant as I knew extra attention would be paid to me and my meals. The operate a little differently than other spots, at Akita the waitress writes down your order like at a normal restaurant as opposed to score card(which always bites me in the ass and I order WAY too much). I’m not a huge role guy, especially when your paying the big bucks for a meal, just give me my raw fish an keep it coming. The salmon, white tuna, tamago and crab meat sashimi all came in good size and was fresh an the right temperature(no cold still but certainly not room temp or warmer). My favorite things here aside from the sashimi were the seaweed salad and the shrimp tempura. The shrimp was huge and you could tell it had JUST been made(a benefit of an empty restaurant). I also just received my spider role and that is quite good(yes I am live reviewing as you read this — I feel like Bob McCowan calling a Leaf’s game). Things I did not like and kinda made me bitter. I must have ordered Miso soup 3 different times and each round of ordering it was the one thing forgotten. Did they not have anymore? We’re they out? Did I smell funny and that’s why I wasn’t getting any? Who knows it was not meant to be… I can accept that and move on but no explanation? I need closure or my sushi heart shan’t go on. Also I found the spicy salmon roles and spicy tune roles to be overly deep fried inside and almost heavy with oil. Well my tummy is full, couple more rolls to finish up and then I’m out for the evening. I’d cleanly give this place 3.5 stars it should be 4 had they not forgotten my Miso. If you’re in Aurora sushi options are limited but this place is a safe bet, consistent with the everyday AYCE.
