Great rolls. The California combo is pretty amazing. Also just tried the deep fried California roll which was awesome. Great quality fish and good take out service in store service is just ok

Its ok. I mean for the price its not bad. Its one of the places where you can get a bento box for less than $ 8. Most places are a la carte now. Taste is so so. I mean nothing special. It fills you up that is for sure. I wanted to order spicy sashimi but they didn’t have it. Hiro is owned and ran by Cantonese speaking owners. I mean it doesn’t matter really. The décor of the place is ok. A bit kind of old style. Not trendy. I noticed that this place gets a lot of take out. Probably due to the near by highrise /apartments.

Do not go here… Simple as that. My boyfriend and I went here as a last minute decision and we deeply regret it. When we arrived(there were only 2 other tables with people at the time) no one greeted us. My boyfriend finally got the attention of one of the cooks because we were waving to him… He said sit anywhere, so we chose a booth near the other tables so it would be faster service. Boy were we wrong! It took someone 5 minutes to give us a menu and some tea(didn’t even say hello or how are you today) and another 10 for them to take our order. It only took 5 minutes to get our food which was great but I still hadn’t received my drink I ordered, so my boyfriend decided to try and flag the waitress(or anybody really) to get it for me. No luck after a couple of minutes had passed he just got it himself(behind our booth was the cooler with drinks) no one said anything and when the waitress brought the last of our food order she didn’t even say anything about it. The prawn tempura was very dry and chewy… And she only gave us once sauce to share for tempura(even though we each got our own big order of it). The sushi was on a different level, I asked the waitress if they had deep fried California rolls and she said yes, so I ordered one not knowing they add things to it.(They added cream cheese) which was disgusting, I wish she would of told me it’s not a normal California roll! When we were done we also had to go to them to pay the bill(which wasn’t even brought to our table). Needless to say we did not tip! Not my favorite place and will not be returning anytime soon!

Been looking for a similar Sushi restaurant to replace Akira Sushi which has had ownership changes and has never been the same. Finally stumbled onto this location. I’m not sure if its family owned but it doesn’t have the same warm neighborhood family atmosphere, although I’m sure many local neighbors visit the location. Its located at a very busy intersection. Street parking is limited, albeit there is a parkcade but its not reliable and often is closed. Onto the menu/food. The menu is vast and has lots of selections. The dinner special $ 9.95 has you choose 3 items from a list of 20 or so choices. that seemed to be a great value. The food is consistent and pretty good for the value. Lots of seating and we have never had issues getting a seat.

Nothing superb, but totally enough to satisfy your usual sushi cravings! Following similar concepts to Sushi Garden and Sushi California, the place does cheap rolls and generous portions of fish! Something unique about Hiro is that they have a combo menu where you can mix and match your own items for a set price.

It looks like the owners changed cause its a completely new staff. Food quality hasn’t changed and everything’s pretty good. Service is kind of slower now though.

Tried it out cause it’s close to home. Although the food came quickly, it didn’t taste fresh. The service was poor and the restaurant felt dirty. Unfortunately, although conveniently located, we definitely won’t be back.

Pros: ITWASSOAFFORDABLE. And pretty tasty. We got two combos and only paid like $ 20? That is like 30ish pieces of tasty sushi. Con: The pieces of sushi were so huge I could barely fit it in my mouth(I have a big mouth). All in all, well worth a visit, especially for the price. Will be back here for certain.

I like coming here because i like their combos; you can choose your appetizer, sushi and rice/noodles, for 10 $ you get a good variety of food. Their quality is not bad for the price you pay. Service is hit and miss, sometimes they forget to bring your setting etc. Street parking is available.

Greeted by a friendly server/hostess as I enter the place. It’s pretty empty here and its about a little past 12 noon. Pretty extensive menu. The place is decorated simply. Dark furniture and comfy leather booths. Big space and lots of generous spacing between tables. I decide to order the appetizer sashimi(5 pieces — 3 Salmon and two tuna). And also order the lunch special chicken teriyaki bento box which comes with a nice garden salad, rice, 6 large pieces of California rolls and four pieces of tempura and a slice of orange. Take a look at the picture. I received a nice bowl of miso soup which tasted pretty good but I wonder if it was one of those packaged and just add hot water type. Now you’ve probably heard of the phrase too much of anything is not good right? Well I think it would apply with this meal. Especially when it comes to the sashimi. They were I’d say about an inch thick and 3 – 4 inches long. The tuna was ok but the salmon was a rough go and tough to eat because it wasn’t tender. I had to use two hands folks!!! WTF?! get what you pay for right? Here’s a suggestion, cut those pieces in half and call it a generous appetizer sashimi(10 pieces for the price of 5) Yup. The chicken teriyaki was ok just ok. The California roll was middle of the road. The tempura was heavily battered and not light at all. The vegetables were not fresh. I wanted to like this meal but I couldn’t. I should’ve tried some of their specialty rolls which looked nice. Perhaps I’ll come back. Damn I feel full and cheated out of my money. Judge for yourself.

Food’s amazing. Staff are great. Styrofoam containers for take-out kills all the food joy.

My sushi requests are never that complicated. Perhaps this is why I had a better experience than most here in the prep department. I did get just a basic avocado and cucumber roll. The service was a bit slow, especially when there was barely anyone there at the time of ordering. At least the server was polite. They were quick to give my bill. If only they were that fast with the service perhaps the tip would’ve been larger. Decent amount of seating inside.

They raised their prices. It is ok but nothing spectacular. Their bento boxes are easy take out. One thing that annoyed me was the bones in the sashmi. That is a no-no.

A reasonably priced sushi joint in this part of town. Beautiful. Parking is available in the covered lot in the back of the building, as well as along Boundary. I hear there are a lot of hit and runs in the covered lot, so people beware. It looks like the renovation job was quite minimal compared to the previous reincarnation of this space(No.1 Chinese). The European-style murals are still there(this goes back 1 more reincarnation to when there was a Greek or Italian restaurant here). It is one nice looking mural though. Staff are friendly, helpful, and Cantonese speaking. So what makes this place special? $ 7 bento(teriyaki beef or chicken) boxes. Add a buck or two for teriyaki salmon or eel. Comes with miso soup too. But what makes me really happy is the portion. Most places have me leaving hungry. Here, they actually put a decent portion of rice underneath that teriyaki goodness. The other trick here is to order the 4 pieces of tempura instead the salmon maki(you get to choose) — it’s more filling. Even with a couple of pieces of nigiri sushi thrown in, the bill is under $ 10 after tax and before tip. Sold. Lastly, they actually accept credit cards here. Yay! This is quickly becoming my go-to sushi place.

I absolutely am impressed with this place. The rolls are huge regardless of the speciality rolls or the staple rolls. The fish and other ingredients looked and taste fresh! This is my new favorite sushi place and I will definitely be a regular here!

Ill definitely be coming back! My gf who hates sushi, had the California roll here and loved it! & the Tempura was delicious! And it was a great deal! Service was fine, she seemed shy. But very nice. Iv seen this location through its different business, and they did a nice job inside. Its comfy, clean and bright(who cares about the mural on the wall people…) I was sad when the Chinese placed closed, but this makes up for it! Ill be recommending it to everyone!

Was pretty stoked to have a Japanese place open up right across the street from where I work. Its a super convenient location to service those in the area because you either have to go at least 10 blocks west of Hastings to get some sushi, or 3 – 4 blocks east of Hastings. Seeing that there were many failed restaurants in that exact spot, there was a bit of hesitance, with a touch of excitement to see if this place fends. I went with three other co workers. They all got bento boxes– Chicken, unagi, and salmon, while I opted for the Temaki combo(3 cones– spicy nigiri, unagi, and something else…) No complaints from 2⁄3 of my co workers about their food, they thought it was good, however, the odd one of them got sick later on that night(not sure if sushi was to blame…) I had no complaints about my temakis except that the rice was really, really starchy and sticky. Over all, I think this place is okay, and serves up okay food for what they charge. The convenience factor is there, decent tasting food, and good portions for prices– hence, 3 stars. I will be back when I need a quick sushi fix!

This recently opened restaurant has seen other predecessors at the same location. It was once a Greek restaurant then a Chinese restaurant and now currently a Japanese restaurant. Chinese owners for this restaurant if you need to know. The owners keep the Mediterranean painted theme on the walls from the previous Greek restaurant. However, they renovated the floor to add new booths, tables and carpet. Ambiance can be a bit confusing with the massive murals on the walls. The downside of carpet flooring is that I can see the tempura bits clinging on the floor from previous diners. Service was adequate. There were 3 tables occupying the restaurant including my group. Server directed us to our seats, dropped off tea and menu, gave us time to decide, took orders and dropped off food. She briefly checked up on us if food was alright and to refill tea. She was not the friendliest server(never smiled once) but she gave us the service we expected. When we were done eating, she handed us containers and a bag to pack our leftovers. It would have been better service if she packed our food for us as the restaurant was not that busy. Price is average for the area. The deluxe boxes are a bit more expensive compared to Tentatsu at Hastings and Nanimo. Food was good. They accommodated a request of no teriyaki sauce for one of the bento boxes we ordered. There is choice of a side for each bento box so we picked tempura and spring rolls. Tempura was just the right amount of batter and perfectly fried. Spring rolls were vegetarian and dressed with sweet chilli sauce. The rice in the California rolls were a bit sticky so the roll fell apart when I picked them up to eat. Good amount of meat/salmon in each of the boxes with rice. The salmon bento box rice had a small amount of bean sprouts. Less sprouts than other restaurants. The miso soup comes with imitation crab meat and not tofu! Interesting detail to take note if you are a vegetarian. Soup was delicious and well balanced flavour other than the crab meat throwing us off. Overall, decent quality and good value. There is room for improvement in the service department.
