Joy was in San Diego right before she relocated to Canada, and I had been going to her on and off for almost 5 years until she left. I miss working with her, as she was a delight to work with and she helped me grow and deal effectively with my problems. I had a domineering elderly Chinese mother with serious boundary issues. Joy helped me define my boundaries and clarify my own(first-generation Asian American) identity, as Mom was very old world and demanding, and I had to establish enough distance from her so that I could take care of her in a healthy way. As Mom got older and was dying, we were able to prepare me for the complex grief that followed a complex relationship. As a result, I handled her passing well and am thriving in this new chapter of my life. Joy listens well, and is perceptive in articulating core issues with great clarity. She is non-judgmental, but opinionated just the right amount to be helpful.
