Looks like this place is finally closing down — torn down for a future condo development. It will be missed.

On the occasional Wednesday night when the Highland Pub is absolutely packed, we head over to the Mountain Shadow for their College Night. Pitchers of beer are a little over $ 10 and wings are $ 0.28 each. They have several flavors to choose from, too(they even had Thai – I know this because the waitress messed up my order and I got Thai instead of Teriyaki). I have only had the wings here, and they are actually really good; they’re pretty meaty and I swear I got more than a dozen of them and only paid for a dozen. With that being said, you will only be able to enjoy your wings if you manage to get the attention of the waitress. Just try getting their attention; they will guaranteed not notice you even after forty minutes(this happened the first time we went there with a group of 8+ people). Last time we went, I had to seek out the waitress and tell her that we’re ready to order whenever she’s ready, and throughout the night she was generally stone-faced and nonchalant about everything. She never asked whether or not we wanted a refill for our pitcher; she just took it and left(along with our plates). And, naturally, she didn’t come with our bill, either, we had to seek her out and tell her we were ready to leave(especially since we weren’t able to put another order in). The prices are great and the beer is good, hence the three stars(plus it’s only a 10-minute bus ride away from where we are); it would get more stars if their customer service was better, but I can live with it and I’ll most probably be going back fairly often.

This pub has a great vibe, and is a beautiful building. But I had the Proscuito salad, and it was over dressed and the ham was cut too thick. Our appy trays were okay, but nothing special. But the building and the atmosphere are amazing.

$ 0.25 wings on Wednesdays! And they are real wings! Not those puny things you find elsewhere on cheap wing night.

Mountain Shadow Pub is the home to several good times my friends and I have had during our undergrad years. Located just below Burnaby Mountain, this pub is one of the go-to places for SFU students since the pubs on campus are either overpriced, the food sucks or have poor service. Expect this pub to be packed during game nights. Depending on which game or whether it’s the playoffs, you might want to come in early. The usual wing-nights apply and they do offer a cheap happy hour. Beer selection is fairly standard and the service is a hit or miss. The food isn’t excellent but you’ll be able to find your favourite pub grub on the menu. If it isn’t there, just ask and I’m sure they can put something together for you. What I love about this place is the atmosphere and the surrounding neighbourhood. The building and the interior resembles a cozy old cabin or lodge for loggers or travelers and the neighbourhood is safe, quiet and has a park not too far away for you to sober up. It is also easily accessible by car(private lot and street parking available) and a walking distance from the nearest 135&144 bus stop.

Overall it’s a good place, depending on what you look for, if you want a quiet meal with friends, stick to the week nights, if you want to get down with a bunch of students, go in on Friday or Saturday We were regulars when we lived in the area. We would visit usually once a week on Wing Night(Tuesday or Wed). Overall i rate it a good 4, but some nights were OK. Weeknights are fairly quiet, wing night for example, the whole place is less than half full. Upstairs is usually closed, which we preferred for privacy. But eating downstairs was no big deal, your typical pub with a unique décor as mentioned. German/Swiss chalet feel, mixed with low-key sports bar. Everyone is fairly friendly but i noticed they had a decent turnover rate for waitresses. If this is the case your service will be mediocre. The food is decent, again, typical for a pub, Nachos, good burgers and salads with acceptable portions and prices. The pizza is Great. Wing Night can be hit or miss, to our best guess it depended on whether or not school was in. Typically they were good sized, with generous amounts of sauce but it seemed when school was in they had cutbacks and the wings were scrawny. As for the waitresses, quite friendly and mostly knowledgeable, but as mentioned with the newbies they were sometimes forgetful of sides like sour creams, or extra ketchup for example. The House Lager pitchers can’t be beat. i will say that. But My last experience was the worst, it was a snow day at SFU, we went in around 6:30pm, and by 9:30 it was getting busy with students. Despite the fact we had ordered multiple(5 or 6) meals and pitchers of beer, by the time it started to get busy we were completely ignored. Our fries never showed up, or our last 3 pitchers of beer didn’t exist, and we were forced to leave through lack of service.

My boyfriend and I stopped in for a bit in late afternoon. I had never been there before, and he wanted to show me around. Unfortunately, the upstairs was closed so we didn’t get to look. It was completely dead; we were the only customers there. I had a Caesar, which was very much to my taste. Service was unobtrusive. I don’t mean to say they ignored us, only that we had mentioned we only wanted to stay for a quick drink, so they left us alone. The décor is interesting, and I took a couple pictures that I will upload.

Some friends were fund raising for The Walk To End Breast Cancer and The Ride To Conquer Cancer, so The Mountain Shadow had a special meal for the event. It was basically a Beef Burger or Veggie Burger, Fries, and your choice of White or Red Wine or a pint of Beer on tap. If it were not for a fundraiser, I would have been very unhappy with my meal. The bun was cold and other than the small amount of Lettuce, Tomato, and Onions, there was no Mayo, Mustard, or any kind of condiment on the Burger. The Fries were OK and the Wines were not the best, but in the end it was for two great causes! I shouldn’t judge this pub based on this meal alone, but other than this fundraiser, I don’t think I’d come back to The Mountain Shadow.

Last night before a competitive few bowling games with the friends, the four of us came here for dinner. It has a great two story Chalet ambiance and would be perfect in the winter when it’s snowing. With the hockey game on it was hard to find a seat where we could just talk without having to yell at one another. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVEHOCKEY, but it’s not the Canucks playing so it’s more of a background noise game for me. We ended up in a bench seat table that could have seated 8 of us lol. No complaints on the arm & leg room at this table :)! The pub has your typical pub fare but is slightly limited for anyone trying to control what they are eating. I ended up having a Cajun Chicken salad with the dressing on the side. At least then I could control everything lol. It was really good. I was not disappointed with the food at all and as far as I could tell from the others at the table they loved their food too. When it came to the beer, we got a nice big jug of Hoegaarden so I indulged in a glass. Normally I would go for a Canadian 67 or Sleemans Clear but they carried neither. I was disappointed in that as I really wanted to have a few beers but watch the caloric intake. For someone trying to lose weight these are important matters lol!!! Now the bathroom trip was probably the funniest part of the night. The four of us were sitting upstairs and I needed to pee. I didn’t expect the pee journey to be such an adventure. One would expect the water closets to be downstairs, so I went down there only to find that they were actually upstairs around the corner from where we were sitting lol. So this was my adventure to Mountain Shadow :)! I will definitely go again with friends but this time I will remember where the water closets are :)!

The Mountain Shadow Pub has intrigued me since I moved to North Burnaby. Oddly tucked away in a residential neighborhood near my own it has a certain appeal for me with its mountain lodge exterior. I finally had an excuse to venture in this weekend after a nice long walk at Barnet Marine Park. A little sunburned and a lot parched, I walked into the cool darkness of the pub with its wood paneled walls and let out a sigh of relief. A jug of Keith’s Amber at $ 14 and $.39 happy hour(2pm-6pm daily) wings were just what I needed to recharge after a busy afternoon. The beer was served quickly and was refreshingly icy! But our waters never came. They must have been hanging out with the Ranch sauce that my husband failed to receive before he’d polished off his wings. The food was tasty and timely, but service was pretty much non existent after our initial round. Prices seemed reasonable, especially for the house lager at only $ 10.50 a jug, and the menu looked to have basic pub fare and a few interesting items. This place is definitely book marked for a second visit.

On a GPS directed food adventure one night I selected«German» being in the mood for a schnitzel, but instead found this pub when GPS instructed was German, but since we were there decided to go in. It has a nice chalet kind of appeal and it feels like it really is tucked away, oh wait it is. Despite that it was quite busy, but we managed to find a table and a server came around to drop off menus and take drink orders. Clearly expecting pub grub at this point I was excited to order a turkey burger with bacon and cheese with a side of onion rings, my boyfriend had fish and chips. The food was decent by far by pub standards and our server was great. We also decided to partake in some pull tab action and were ecstatic to win $ 50. In summary: random find, good pub grub, friendly service, and we had the random luck to cover the meal, drinks and walked out $ 10 ahead. Not too shabby!

A very lively yet dark pub. They have a pool table and and bubble hockey. Great place to go with a bunch of friends. The staff are quite friendly. They also have an off license beer and wine store. Food is the regular standard pub grub.

When you walk in, it’s seat yourself so it can be a little confusing. You never really know if you’re going to get any service, but sure enough, someone will always find you and drop off a drink and food menu. It gets really busy on Wednesdays and Thursdays when wings are 15 cents each — yes, only 15 cents! Tons of students from SFU come here, along with the local residents. It’s a great atmosphere especially when hockey season roles around. Make sure you get there early if you want a seat! They are very community orientated so there are fundraisers and functions quite often — which is nice.
