I’ve been here several times, and I always thought the fish was fresh and sushi prepared well. However, I honestly cannot recommend the aburi. It tasted burnt and dry. I was fairly disappointed since this is one of my favorite sushi joints in Burnaby. Other than that, the food is decent. Also, the service was terrible. Our water never got refilled(even though the restaurant was half empty). They also mixed up our bill(gave us a cheaper bill than what we should’ve paid), and when we told them, they tried to give us a bill for over $ 100(even though we were a party of 2 and had in reality, a bill for $ 30). I just want to pay for the food I consumed, no more, no less, is that too much to ask for? Lesson: please check your bill.

Been here a few times, each time was okay, nothing special, Ive definitely had better sushi. As for service, their servers are not keen on checking-in to see how things are going, they also take a long time when you do ask for assistance.

Love this place for their specialty sushi dishes! Favourites are as such: black dragon, white dragon, Las Vegas roll… They’re all very unique. Giving 4 stars for the majority of their dishes but a sad 2 stars for their service. I don’t know if this is how they do business in restaurants in their country but I always feel rushed when it’s time to pay yet when I want a refill on tea or ask for more stuff, they take forever to make it to your table! (During non peak hours too!) Aside from that, this is totally my go-to place for sushi :)

It might look like a 3.5 star place, but with the quick and friendly service as well as large sashimi portions, it deserves a little better. The real drawback is the food quality, which is average. Donburi bowls are $ 10, special rolls are $ 6.50 to $ 11, and maki combos are $ 7+. Go for: large available seating, large selection of food, friendly staff, quick service, perfectly priced, decent décor Don’t go for: the best flavours or quality, originalty

This review is for take out only. We had a pretty broad order to service a room of hungry people in an all day meeting. All of the food in general was good. As someone has already noted in the reviews the rolls are a bit on the large side. Too large to get a 4th star — too much rice and just a little hard to handle. Yes, it looks like a lot of food but I would rather see a more compact taste filled experience than the illusion of bulk.

I actually have been here several times! It’s located about a block away from metering about 10 minutes walk from the bay entrance. The outside of the building looks like a castle so it’s hard to miss it. I ordered the sashimi this time and it is definitely very fresh. The tempura is just on the point, crispy, light and very sweet. I also really enjoy their aburi nigiri sushi(seared nigiri sushi) although I will ask for less sauce on the top so that the sauce will not overpower the nigiri. I have tried several of their creative rolls and I especially like their awesome roll it is literally awesome! I ordered the Red toll this time and it’s fresh too! They also offer many different combo for those who want to try a bit of everything. I have only been to dinner at this place and it’s always really packed. Usually you will have to wait about 5 to 10 minutes at busy time. Service is quick and prompt I always see a lot of family dining here with kids so it is pretty child friend!

Came here for dinner over the weekend. Ordered the salmon sashimi which was thick and delicious. Also had some aburi which were also very delicious. You can definitely taste the seared meat, but was a tad too saucy. The tataki roll wasn’t really what I expected. I was hoping to get my money’s worth and have something like having tuna tataki and salad for the price of one. It probably would have been better to order each separately. I didn’t think tataki roll concoction went well together. I found their special rolls definitely more than a little high on sauce. The volcano roll was too heavy in spicy sauce which kind of hindered the taste of the chop scallop and sashimi. Thankfully my tongue survived. Again, the red dragon roll was also drowning in mayo. All in all the sushi was pretty good. Probably around 3.75 to 4 out of 5. The food also came out quickly which scores big points for me. Service is hit or miss, they are rather busy, so it might be difficult to flag someone down to refill your tea. Paying up front also speeds thing up so you’re not trying to find a server to get the bill. Parking is available behind the restaurant or in residential. Wouldn’t mind coming back if I’m in the area.

My family went there on a Wednesday evening so we did not have to line up and the service was very fast. We ordered 3 rolls(White Dragon, Black Dragon, and Awesome), spicy salmon sashimi, aburi salmon nigiri, ikura nigiri, and tobiko nigiri and tuna & salmon sashimi. Sashimi dishes tasted very fresh and delicious but there was an excessive amount of spicy sauce for the spicy salmon sashimi. As for the rolls, the sauce and topping combinations were on point but again, there was too much sauce for our liking and too much topping(fish flakes?) that it made the rolls look very messy. Aburi salmon nigiri was super tasty(MUSTTRY!). Both the ikura and tobiko nigiri were quite small for the price they charge(compared to other sushi places). Overall, it was a very satisfying meal and we will definitely come back!

Haven’t been here in awhile but I have an abundance of old pictures… so…from what i remember, its not bad although rice is layered pretty thick, prices are higher than sushi garden although quality is about the same. They have a lot of special rolls which i used to get all the time and they were pretty good but be prepared for the sauce overload! Overall, easier to get a spot at than sushi garden and pretty close but nothing special.

Cute lil place, really easy to miss but it’s a gem! Sushi is pretty cheap here and service is fast. Would definitely recommend the sushi pizza because it’s my favorite thing on the menu!

Last few times I have been disappointed. Mushy gyoza and the first and last piece of my salmon rolls were 100% rice and seaweed, not okay! I also ordered to pick up, didn’t get the discount or the«free miso» on my receipt. Getting sloppy!

The sushi is always very good quality, but the service has been deteriorating over the last few months. The long term staff have moved on. Getting a seat takes a very long time, even with numerous empty tables. Similarly, getting a chance to order and receiving food takes way too long. This place is short staffed every time I’ve went in the past few weeks. I am sad to drop this store as my go to sushi location.

PROS + Lots of tables + You can call your server by pressing the bell on your table + Friendly service + Cheap price CONS — Sushi rice was mushy. Too much water. — I wished the special rolls were presented more nicely. Can be much better :)! RATING Food 3.0÷5.0 Ambience 3.5÷5.0 Service 3.5÷5.0 Price $, $$ Sushi Oyama located on Kingsway and Royal Oak Avenue, is a converted heritage house featuring beautiful stone exterior on the outside and modern wooden decors on the inside. This beautiful restaurant was once operated as the Royal Oak Funeral Home until 1981… Hmm I don’t really mind as long as they give me good food, but I wished my friend told me about it as soon as I sat on the table. As all my friends know how much I love salmon sashimi, we had two orders of Salmon Sashimi 9pcs($ 9.45). It had a nice, firm texture(3.5÷5.0). Salmon Eagle Eye($ 2.95) was on their special menu on the day. It’s a cute little item you can try out as an appetizer. The chopped scallop with tobiko was wrapped around with aburi salmon. It wasn’t strong in terms of flavour but it definitely had that melting-in-the-mouth texture. *Don’t get it if you don’t like mayo(3.0÷5.0). We all wanted something special and unique, so we tried their Sushi Pizza($ 10.40). It is basically the deep-fried rice topped with cucumber, avocado, masago and chopped spicy tuna & salmon, drizzled with spicy mayo and unagi sauce. Not a bad combination, but the rice was way too mushy and watery. It reminded me of that«failed» rice I made for the first time…(2.5÷5.0). Las Vegas Roll($ 9.40) consisted of cream cheese, spicy salmon, crab meat, cucumber on the inside, then deep-fried, and topped with masago, bonito with 5 kinds of sauces. You don’t want to try LV Roll until you finish all your sashimi or appetizers since this roll is very greasy, strong in terms of flavour and filling at the same time. It tasted average and again the rice was way too mushy and unappetizing(2.5÷5.0). Red Dragon Roll($ 12.50) consisted of deep fried shrimp, crab meat, avocado on the inside, and wrapped with salmon sashimi on the outside. It was topped with bonito, masago, tobiko, spicy mayo and unagi sauce(3.0÷5.0). Everyone loved Oyama’s Salmon Carpaccio($ 9.95). Decent quality with good combination of the sauces. The salmon was seared to perfection!(4.5÷5.0). Sound Trap Roll($ 9.40) consisted of cucumber, avocado, deep fried prawn on the inside, and topped with seared tuna(I believe it tasted more like toro), tempura bits and mayo(3.0÷5.0).

Heritage land mark– 1910 built by a Norwegian and owned till death was sold to another wealthy family a became a funeral homes that operate till 1981… after that became a part of the Burlington square… at present its one of the famous japanese restaurant in burnaby bc,.
IN my 15 years living here in vancouver i just pass by this place and just asking myself«is that place good?’…since i started my page called taste buds by Ronnel i developed this urge and curiosity to visit different restaurant, compare the service and the quality of food, the ambiance, the pricing etc… in a way its not good because since i started this free lance non profit hobby of mine i seldom visit restaurant for the second time… hahahahhah. theres like 1000 more outside… . i went here with my friends, parking at the rear and street parking, it was lunch so we didnt call for a reservation… not bad we had a good spot near the window… old place… ancestral house turned restaurant… i heard it was. Korean owned business and selling Japanese cuisine… good food, service a bit slow because resto is full… noise level moderate, i didnt notice if there is elevator there for our old folks and clientele having hard time using the stairs. we had fresh oyster, sahimi. sushi and baked/grilled salmon. we also tried the udon soup and some salad… affordable price… foods taste good and fresh… not a bad place to enjoy and satisfy your cravings for japfudz…

After having driven by many times, I can finally cross this place off my list. There’s street parking and parking in the back = instant plus. Something about the inside of the restaurant makes it feel so cozy. They have a patio and a nice little waterfall by the entrance. Service was very efficient. Gyoza is the best I’ve had. Perfectly pan fried and piping hot. So good that we got another order of these bad boys right after we finished with the first. Seafood udon came with 1 mussel, 2 imitation crab sticks, 1 fish ball, 1 shrimp, julienne carrots, some mushrooms, and a few pieces of cabbage and tofu puffs. Soup was a bit bland but nothing togarashi can’t fix! They are generous with the sauces that they put on the rolls which I love because that eliminates the need for soy sauce. Definitely my new favourite sushi joint and am already dreaming about my next visit.

This place was beautiful! It was a house surrounded by flowers and trees, and I really love this place. The service was ok, but the food was good except the deep fried oyster. I saw someone posted a picture of deep fried oyster which was severed on the shell of oyster. Actually, it didn’t come with the shell which make me feel it was not fresh! And they were smaller than before. The portion of salmon was more than other restaurants. The black dragon and black pearl were really delicious and special! YOUMUSTHAVE!!!

*sigh* Another sushi place with huge HUGE rolls packed with rice. I don’t feel like I’m getting more value, I feel like I’m just bulking up on rice. The roll should be single easy bite size for an adult. Not something the size of my fist. I ordered the veggie combo, and an order of teriyaki beef roll. The wife got the ‘awesome roll’, and a chopped scallop cone. My rolls were all HUGE. The only one that wasn’t was the avocado roll that came in the veggie combo. The other two were a tempura yam roll, and a veggie roll(this one was ½ radish and about 4 cm in diameter). The teriyaki beef roll was about as big as the veggie roll, and just tasted… odd. Not bad, not good… just… odd. Can’t put my finger on it. Service was fine, seated right away… nothing wrong there… it’s just this tendency for sushi places to make these annoyingly large rolls. Down to the end… would I go back. Nope. There’s places closer to me that do as good a job, or better… I don’t even care if it’s for a little more $$$… we’re looking quality here… not quantity(of rice).

I was solo dining here and the server guided me to hall way outside of the restaurant. Cold breeze scared me, but felt warm because there was heater around the hall. Fast service and great food. The server was friendly and helpful. I asked her if Tuna Carpaccio is salty than Tuna Tataki. She recommended Tuna Tataki and said she can put lesser soysauce. Also if you need a fast service, there’s a buzzer attached on the corner of the table. You can use it when you need help instead of calling out servers.
