I have a really bad back. The reason why I chose this company was their variety of components that fit together to make a complete bed. Being able to try different materials & firmness was a real plus. I had bought and sold 3 «Brand name» beds.“That start firm, but sag quickly. So a «custom» bed — that can be flipped & rotated appealed to me. However running into some snags along the way such as, they were in the midst of changing suppliers so the wait time for a component was super lengthy. Also I think that if a person chose a 4″ or higher top piece rather than their standard 3″ H (basically a topper to me — plus it makes the bed fairly low, plus my sheets were way too loose)
To start with it gives the completed bed a typical overall height and solidness. The other snag was being given a coil top, to try (a choice other than foam) that clearly didn’t match in size to the bottom base) .Finally I am on the «2050» foam (firmest)and could not be happier, my back hasn’t had a bad day in 3 months! My neck pain disappeared I believe because of the latex pillow– love it. Bottom line, if you have a bad back start with the firm choice. Thanks Natalie & Martin.

I went to Halstead with a friend who had a custom sofa made there. The most impressive thing about this custom place over others was the amount of not just fabric and legs to pick from, but foam too. I do the occasional reupholstering and found out I can buy the foam from them, which is a much higher quality than the stuff I’ve bought before.

Buying furniture to fit your needs is daunting task. Trying to find the perfect headboard is even harder! After visiting numerous furniture stores trying to find the right sized headboard to your exact liking gets frustrating. So to Halstead I go! Their website seems promising and they’ve been in business a while. I do like to support local businesses as much as possible, so shopping here would mean supporting Calgary based businesses from start to finish.
I have to say, they’re absolutely passionate about what they do. Martin helped us with every aspect and helped us envision what we wanted. It’s important to come in with some headboards you’ve seen online to show him what what you’re interested in. There are several floor room models to help as examples. In the end you pick out your fabric/​leather option and customize the size, shape, button tufts, edges, thickness, bed height… and the list goes on and on. We even customized a bench for the end of the bed to the same width and smaller depth. This is definitely something you can’t find just anywhere.
I’m only docking one star because of the lack of communication. I’m uncertain if their main email account rejects gmail messages to their spam folder. I did end up using a Shaw email account and sent a direct message via their Facebook page and within a half hour I got a phone call. I have to admit I was uncertain about the process because it did take much much longer than anticipated. We were told a timeline of about 4 – 6 weeks. It took 10 weeks before we got the call saying it was done. That’s completely understandable after being told they lost 2 workers to injuries during December and that people were under the weather. Also, there were materials that were on order due to the amount being used for our headboard was more than expected and they needed more to finish our matching bench.
Once the bed and bench are delivered I will be sure to update my review… more to come soon!

When I met the owners of Halsteads, Martin & Michelle, they were very charming and made lots of promises about making custom furniture and wanting happy customers. Once they had my deposit of almost $ 3000, it became increasingly difficult to get them to spend time with me to work out the details of the order. Then I was bumped to a new employee while Martin & Michelle went off to Las Vegas. It was like starting from scratch again with lots of mistakes. After months of wasted time, gas, and energy, and my calls not being returned, I told them that too much time had passed and I wanted my deposit refunded. We didn’t even have drawings or a final price and nothing had been started. Natalie took my credit card info and promised an immediate refund. Then Michelle called and refused and became rude. Then her husband Martin called and tried to belittle me into going ahead with the order. I expressed my concerns that they are having financial problems and may go out of business before I ever saw any furniture. Eventually Martin promised me a full refund and said he would not do business with me in the future if I came back to them next year to buy furniture. It has been weeks and I have still not received the promised refund and they do not return my many, many phone calls. I’m a senior citizen and am worried that they will just close their doors and disappear with my money. Has anyone else had a problem with this company?
