This is the first review on Unilocal! This Chinese Karaōke is overall okay! The Chinese songs selection is pretty broad and many songs are up to date, and there are also many English, Korean and Japanese songs! But the price is somewhat expensive! $ 38 per hour for small room or $ 22 per person for the whole night. During singing it can be pretty hot! This time all the rooms are reserved and there are a lot of people here! But I will try some other karaokes in Calgary after this time!

The place is rather dirty! The control screen is difficult to use, way to hard to find songs and the selection of songs in english is pretty small. The service was not the best. I will definitely not return to this place anytime soon!

We went there on a Friday night looking to sing some K-Pop. It’s by the gay bar Ten X by the way. Walking into the room, it was pretty small. But we surprisingly managed to fit 7 people into one. It is also VERY hot in there. No dancing. It has a light up table and no, it’s not sound proof. I have yet to find a karaōke place that is sound proof. You can hear everyone, and everyone can hear you. It’s time to deal with that… When it comes to navigating the menu, it was very very confusing. The good thing is, the menu language can be switched, the bad news is, the songs are sorted very oddly. We were told that sometimes we had to search title or artist to find the song as it might be in the title, but not be under the artist. We can also only type in the first letter of whatever we’re looking for, not the whole thing. Once you get used to navigating it, you’ll be fine.(HINT: Press«country» and press«popular”/“favorites». Some are also listed under«western artists». things should pick up from there) Song choices, when it came to K-pop and English, we were indeed very limited. But we somehow managed to pull out 5 hours of it so, it was enough. The awesome part though was that they had matching Music Videos to the song! Sometimes the karaōke lyrics were wrong, in a weird font, but that’s ok! Somethings I noticed as well, some of the lyrics were romanized, while others were pure hangul! Most songs are in hangul, so pull out your ipod, or have that song pat down memorized if you can’t read hangul. For the Mics, we had two wired and would occasionally get feedback from the sound system. We still aren’t sure why. The mics are loud and echo-y, though I like them like that because that just makes screaming the song all the better :) Finding K-Pop songs were also difficult as some artists have random Chinese characters in it. You also cannot type hangul. You can only type English and you can actually write Chinese(the menu is touch-screen), When it came to food, well we didn’t order any, but we did order a drink which isn’t too bad for the price. They also sell Shisha which I was bit surprised about, but whatever. They have a room full of arcade games as well. The staff is very friendly and respond quickly when you press the service button. ANDSUPERNICE. Song Choice: 2⁄5 I think Lips would be a much better experience for someone looking for Chinese karaōke songs. It would also be much easier for you to find songs, however for my end of the K-Pop experience, I’m going to have to dock them points Quality: 4.5÷5 Well I enjoyed the echo-y acoustics and the mic that 3 people could scream into. Matching MV’s are a bonus. Every once in a while you would get some feedback though… Service: 5⁄5 Overall: 3⁄5 I do have to dock major points for the confusing navigation menu that takes a while to figure out, and difficult ways to find a song. I’d give a 3.5 if I could…

+ clean and modern private rooms + serves alcohol + large selection of chinese songs + $ 20 shisha — system is all in chinese, pretty hard to use if you can’t read chinese — not the best selection of non-chinese songs — only two wired mics in each room — expensive for smaller groups(rooms are $ 40 an hour i think) — no bubble tea — darts machine is gone

If you know me you know I don’t really do the Karaōke, I’m super shy, I definitely can’t sing and so I try as hard as I can to stay away from these kinda places. Every now and then though you have a night of celebrations like last night and so I had to make my way down to Lips KTV. Lips is located on a few doors down from Sapien Nightclub, basically across the street from the Safeway on 10th Avenue. There is some parking right infront of the place, also some parking on the side lot, parking on the street and if you don’t really care about your car you can always be bold and park in the Safeway parking lot as well. Lips seems a little different from the other usual Karaōke lounges when I walked through the door to be greeted by two bouncers, yeah I guess I could see that there might be the odd time there is trouble happening. If you have ever been to Superstar Karaōke, Lips basically is set up in the same manner — there’s a small room with a few arcade machines of some sort and the rest are hallways that lead to the private rooms, there is no main room. It does look like they have spent some money on this place as I do appreciate how the rooms are so clean and modern unlike a lot of other Karaōke places where I’m not even really sure if I want to sit down anywhere. They put a lot of money into the lighting as well, you’ll know what I mean when you go there and see the tables changing different colors and stuff. The display to change songs and whatever, it is cool, new and modern but seems kind of difficult to control — maybe I am just used to looking at a book and putting in numbers with the remote control lol. Also, for some reason it seems like the English song selection isn’t as big as I thought it would be or it was just difficult to find the songs that we wanted to pick. The people working at Lips are attentive though, when you press the service button they are pretty quick to come see what you need.
