Mother Tucker’s

Rob & I went here the one time, and I truthfully didn’t enjoy it (personal reasons) but that’s not the point.
I am writing this for those of you who looked up M.T. Tucker’s out of curiosity. Just wanted to let you know it officially closed in January of this year.
But, there is a multitude of other restaurants around that part of downtown ;)

Gonna miss the ol’ MT Tuckers! Had many a good prime rib and salad bar here!

Das MT Tucker’s ist eine Art Steakhouse. Eine «Art» Steakhouse? Ja! Das Interieur bewegt sich irgendwo zwischen Wild-​West-​Saloon, rustikalem Steakhouse und Wohnzimmer. Hier und da hängt auch ein Fernseher, so dass es auch ein bißchen Sportsbar ist — aber wirklich nur ein bißchen.
Ich war zweimal da und zweimal recht früh. Kein Wunder — es war dementsprechend leer und damit fast ungemütlich. Die gedimmte Beleuchtung im inneren hat einn fast glauben lassen, dass noch gar nicht richtig geöffnet ist.
Die Speisekarte bietet verschieden Vorspeisen (Wings, Schnecken, Suppe,…) und das grosse Salatbuffet. Dieses Buffet ist für nordamerikanische Verhältnisse in der Tat sehr groß. Der Europäer wird sich aber ein bißchen wundern, denn grünen Salat findet man nur wenig. Dafür aber Nudelsalat, Kartoffelsalat, rohes Gemüse (Brokkoli, Sellerie, Zwiebeln, Mais,…) Käseplatten, Kracker oder auch eine Leberpastete.
Die Hauptgerichte kann man in drei Kategorien unterteilen: Ribs, Prime Rib und Steaks sowie Seafood.
Ribs gibt es hier sowohl vom Schwein (Baby Back Ribs, der Klassiker), als auch vom Rind (BBQ Beef Ribs). Hier untergeordnet findet man auch Gerichte mit Huhn, etweder als Brathähnchen oder als Hühnerbrust.
Zu den Steaks als solches ist nicht viel zu sagen, daß Prime Rib im Unterschied wird neben dem Salatbuffet als Scheibe aus einem großen Braten geschnitten und hat damit eine ganz andere Charakterristic als die Steaks.
Dem Seafood hat keiner Beachtung beigemessen…
Die Portionen sind — wer hätte es gedacht — ohne Frage sehr groß und die Preise angemessen: Starter im Berich von 6 – 9 CAD, Hauptgerichte (inkl. Beilagen und Salat-​Buffet) 21 – 28 CAD.
Leider ist die Qualität des Essens nicht wirklich überzeugend. Während die Wings sich noch ganz tapfer schlagen und mit jeder guten Sportsbar mithalten können fallen die Ribs deutlich ab: Sowohl die BabyBack als auch die Beef Ribs machen beide geschmacklich nicht viel her. Intensiver Einsatz der Beißwerkzeuge war notwendig, um das Fleisch vom Knochen zu lösen.
Die Steaks waren guter Standard.
Naja, alles in allem zwei Sterne.
Sonntagsabends gibt es ein großes Buffet, wo es für kleines Geld eine große Auswahl an Essen gibt. Dann gibt es auch Spaghetti, Pizza, Lasagne und natürlich die üblichen Standards. Dieses Buffet wurde anscheinend schon mehrfach in der regionalen Presse empfohlen.

It would seem like Mother Tuckers should be a great restaurant. They have an interesting take on interior design and serve home-​cooked style meals, mostly barbecue style.
So why did I leave Mother Tuckers unhappy? Probably because I was completely broke afterward. I couldn’t believe the extremely expensive pricing they had on almost everything. The food to the drinks, everything seemed overpriced to me.
The only plus about Mother Tuckers was the salad bar. With each meal comes an all-​you-​can-​eat salad. They have a giant bar with a whole bunch of different salad ingredients… even water chestnuts! That was the only redeeming quality about this place.
Other than that, our service wasn’t the greatest. It seemed as though our waitress was neglecting our table, even though we had about 12 people there. She was nice enough to split the tab up into couples for us.
So, I probably won’t be going back to Mother Tuckers anytime soon. As much as I enjoyed the salad bar, the food wasn’t tasty enough for me and it definitely wasn’t worth those prices. It’s unfortunate because it seems to have all the makings of a decent restaurant.

Had the prime rib, it was pretty good minus they didn’t have anything under medium cooked. I liked how it was serve yourself with sides + salad bar. Friend had the buffet and said it was pretty meh, everything was pretty much dry, highlight was the dessert. Staff was great, waiter kept up with refills and such and price wise wasn’t too bad. About 75 for the 3 of us.

Okay, it’s not really an exceptional place. The décor is old-​west themed, I guess, and the food is alright. But they do offer free meals on your birthday which could mean a free prime-​rib dinner as it did for my cousin when I took him here. It was my treat, after all.
He got to pick his beef and watch the guy cut it, which in some circles is a big deal. The food was good. Although the prime rib was free, my chicken cost something like $ 30. Strange…
But the service was good and friendly and they do offer a large salad bar for those interested in that.
