The River Walk is a must see, especially during this time of year where the fall colors are so vibrant, the air is crisp and the wildlife is getting ready for winter. This area is going to be the most happening, trendy place when it is completed. It is neat to see how the River Walk is being used from runners running to couples picnicking and friends having coffee overlooking the River with an exceptional view of the city. Many events have been hosted in East Village including movie nights, yoga right on the River Walk platform and coming up, tomorrow, Oct. 24th, ET in EV Bike Ride followed by a sweet afterparty! If you haven’t checked out The Calgary East Village River Walk, make a plan too! It’s definitely a beautiful & unique addition to our city.

The River Walk is kickin’ some butt and taking names! Ok, well, maybe those of us running/walking/biking along it are the ones kicking butt and taking names. That doesn’t stop it from being a great addition to our riverside pathway system. Heading on over from Centre Street to Fort Calgary, my runs got a wee bit longer whenever I’d start from Eau Claire. I like to credit it with the fact that my jeans still fit with all the food and drink there is to enjoy in C-town these days. And an added bonus… a few nice long stairs to stop and take a rest on by the old Simmons building. And by rest, really I meant to do step ups on to keep your heart rate going before you turn around and run back from whence you came. Yeah… that’s totally what I meant.

The Calgary East Village River Walk is a beautiful stretch of pathway that will eventually extend from Eau Claire Market to Fort Calgary. Designed with accessibility and functionality in mind, the River Walk features rest areas at regular intervals, including toilets and permanent concrete lounge chairs. While these chairs are a rather hideous shade of green, they are still nice to have there. I definitely see this area getting heavy use during the summer months as people endeavour to get outside and enjoy whatever we can get. At night the stretch east of the fifth avenue fly-over is all lit up. While the lights of blue and green are beautiful, I fear they may add to the ever-increasing problem of light pollution. Certainly if you are a driver heading eastbound out of downtown on the Edmonton Trail bridge you will be blinded momentarily by all the bright lights used to light up the bridge. Again, while beautiful, I fear it is also dangerous. All-in-all, though, I think the River Walk component of the East Village project is a great idea, encouraging pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, and other rolling people to use the space. Encouraging community groups to hold festivals such as Rock the River is also nice, as it further encourages a multi-use model.
