Very low grade food, full of fillers and salt. I have a headache right now and this is the headache I get from Chinese food with MSG. I read the nutritional information that I had to hunt for online(as it was not posted on their website) and there is 1gm of salt in one little pie! UNREAL. The fella that owns the place is a really nice guy, but they really need to step up the quality of the ingredients and clearly post the nutritional information. I don’t see any difference in their product than fast food /junk food and I just feel that the farmers market should be for the lack of a better word… wholesome. If you care about your body I would advise you not to put these pies into it. Did I mention they are totally overpriced? Anyways… no thanks for the headache.

Simple Simon Pies has a wide selection of savoury pie flavours and they offer samples so you can decide before you buy. They offer a few vegetarian options, gluten free and dairy free as well as the more common options — lots of choices. These pies make for a practical easy small meal or snack to store in the freezer at home. They have nice dessert pies as well; fruit and cheesecake. The lemon cheesecake is my favourite, it is not too sweet — perfect! The service has been consistently attentive, patient and friendly. I have been a fan of Simple Simon Pies for many years! :-)

Honestly everytime I eat a pie from here, I am incredibly disappointed. I’ve given this place a 2nd and 3rd and 4th chance. I do not recommend anyone eating these unless you want a bland, flavourless dish.

If I were to be particular, then I would say this is about a 3.75-star establishment, but in this instance, I suppose I will round up. :-) No really, this is a great little place inside Market on MacLeod. They have a great variety of traditional pies(such as sheperds or pecan) but they also have a bunch of non-traditional varieties, such as taco pies. Not all of their pies are made the same and some of their rice dishes could use a bit more flavor, but all-in-all this palce is delicious for either a quick snack there or great meals to take home. Also, if you go on a busier day(like a Saturday) then they have many of the pies to sample. I notice that there are some reviews that are pretty negative and I think maybe it might be a case of inconsistency. The last time I was in the Market, I purchased about 12 pies, but I did so all at the same time. Therefore, maybe I was lucky enough to get a good batch. However, I love that you can get them in smaller sizes and there is such a variety. For instance, we got Moroccan stew, thai beef, taco, shepherd’s pie, jamaican beef, and a ton others I can’t remember. We have been really happy with every pie we’ve had and like I said, we were able to sample them before we left. That day there was also a chili cook-off at the Market which was also delicious. Therefore, maybe if you don’t like their pies, you might want to try their rice/chili/etc instead. In general, if you’re skeptical, I recommend checking it out on a Saturday and see what they’ve got. The staff were also incredibly helpful and nice and they might be able to direct your choices to something more palatable for you.

The vegetarian curry pie was just a gummy mass… terrible and extremely disappointing. The vegetarian taco wasn’t much better. It’s sad that I wasted so much money on these. afraid to try the quiche. Not sure what others on here have been eating. Or if those are all real reviews. Sorry simon… your pies didn’t make the cut.

Ok… so it was dang cold outside and I entered the crossroads market… happy to be out of the wind… and needing a quick… warmer upper. I wander over to the simple simon booth that sells frozen meals and soups as i know they always have samples… and this time I was almost sampling every single thing on their menu! And most were past the delish register on my tongue… so I bought 5 soups and 5 meals… all for $ 42 which to me is a great deal! that’s a meal for $ 4.20(tho might add sumpin too) all good so far right? well… the first taste at home I had was a few days later of the lemon grass chicken… which was barely ok… huh? I would assume same recipe as one I sampled… and gee… but wasn’t the black plastic container it was in… in my freezer… like shrink since I put it in… cuz it wasn’t looking so deep now! Ok…mebbe others will be gooder I think. Last nite I more than sampled their cherry pie… ate a whole one… only time I like to admit… I ate the whole damn pie! It was ok… not so great… and tasting like filling was right out of the can. just a bit ago this aft I decide to nuke the turkey rice soup… half of the plastic container its sold in was a decent sized bowl of soup for me. lots of ingredients but quite salty… darn! so now I have 8 more to sample… if I don’t donate to a «friend»…

First stop I made upon entering the market. It made the food decisions afterwards more difficult because all I could think of was Simple Simon’s Pies! The thing I liked the most was that you were able to sample their different pies before making a decisions which pie to have. I tried the Lobster Mac and Cheese and their Spicy Buffalo Wing Pie. Both were delicious. If you make a trip to the Calgary Farmers Market, you have to make a stop at Simple Simon’s Pies.

… well, maybe my expectations were super duper high from all the good things I had been told about it. Honestly, the ones I ate were SOOOOOOOSUPERDUPER salty… and also as I take each bite I feel like I’m gonna have a heart attack, or even that my sugar levels are rising! hahah … booooo… I don’t think it’s anything special… I bought frozen ones and still have quite a few in my freezer. Maybe one day i will try a dessert pie, but then again, maybe I won’t.

3.5 stars The Farmers Market location for Simple Simon pies is awesome. You can’t possibly pass by the booth without sampling a few pies. And then you buy. Because you liked them all. I recently stumbled across the frozen versions at my nearby Co-Op store. I snatched up almost a half dozen of the Chicken Shepherds pies because these individual sized pies make fantastic grab-and-go lunch if paired with some veggies. They were about $ 3.50 which is pretty good. Upon arriving home and showing them to my boyfriend, we both remarked at how much protein these little babies had. Not bad at all, we thought. Right before stuffing them into the freezer though, something caught my eye on the ingredients list: ‘hydrogenated soybean oil’. On the top, AND in the filling of the pie. And ‘vegetable oil shortening’, which is essentially the same as hydrogenated vegetable oil. I was disappointed. I try as much as I can to stay away from stuff that has hydrogenated oils in them, and make it a point not to bring home food that has them. Hydrogenated oils are extremely unhealthy, because they literally do not ever leave your system. I have bought many of the pies from the farmers markets before, but alas did not know the ingredients. Now that I know, I won’t be buying them again. I will probably finish these pies because I bought them, but that would be the last of it. Too bad these little pies, seemingly small and harmless looking, are not as healthy as I had thought! Review #9 of Unilocal’s 30 Day Challenge 2012
