I’ve always been invited to reading events at the Area, but by chance never seem to make it. I finally had a chance to make it tonight considering I had to do a reading of mine. I always wondered from the website what this place would look like. Part community hall, part garden The Area seems to be the kind of place artists, hipsters turned hippies, and open minded individuals flocked to for events. I remember calling this place once having considered it as a place for an event and the organizers were quite friendly and even offered to take care of things like liquor licenses on their side. Some might not like it, but I like the charming look to this place. The artwork done by local artists and the overall natural way everything has been organized here, reminds me that if Portlandia existed in Calgary, this would be the place. Haha, btw have you met ALIKI?!

The Area is possibly the most unique event space in Calgary. I’ve attended a number of events here, and had the happy circumstance of stumbling upon a few unexpectedly. Most recently, Aggie Day — a permaculture and city farming event sharing information, tips and produce. The perfect addition to a sunny Sunday afternoon. With two buildings on site — a smaller café of sorts in the front, and a ‘garage’ in back that provides covered event space — the area offers a cost-effective and flexible location for local groups of small to moderate size. They’ve recently added a community garden in back which was, last year, simply a pile of dirt ready to be tilled. I imagine that, after a little rain, sun and care, it will spring to life in a beautiful array of vegetation. Keep an eye on The Area website( ) for a colorful collection of events that inspire community building and urban engagement in Inglewood. If you’re heading out in the evening, though, don’t forget your bug spray — if you wear it – since the mosquitoes love it as much as the patrons do.
