North American-style Chinese food is not the same as food in China itself. We shun the staple of rice with a few toppings, and take portions of mostly just the toppings themself. This is the only reason I can account for the other negative, and in one case disparaging, reviews of Ginkgo’s. They serve a lot of food here, and it’s obvious because they’re always busy and the food is always fresh. I can’t speak for the other two Ginkgo’s locations in Chilliwack, but this particular location near Staples serves up some of the best Chinese food in the Valley.

My best friend loves this place(keep in mind that he loves a bargain), so I tried it myself. The interior is like a low-class cafeteria. They do, however, have a wide selection and very low prices. The food is adequate in taste but not great. One thing I noticed that was rather disturbing to me is that every single patron was extremely obese. I’m not sure if this is because of the fattening quality of their food or because of the low prices and large portions. But it really made me think twice about eating there myself as I closely watch my weight and what I put in my body. If you are looking for low-cost Chinese food with large portions, strictly take-out, then this is the place for you. If you’re looking for good quality food and an enjoyable environment to eat it in though, I would suggest looking elsewhere. If I’m craving Chinese food, am low on cash and don’t want to eat in the restaurant, I will be back but otherwise I will look for a restaurant with a nicer environment and better quality food.

Ginko is to Chinese cuisine what MacDonalds is to fine Canadian dining. Mind you, if you are in the mood for Chinese fast food I suppose it’s as good as any.
