There are three liquor stores in Claresholm. Two of which are directly across the street from each other… Oh Alberta. You feisty devil. I’d wag a finger at you but BC throws down the kitty-corner Starbucks, so we really can’t talk. And when it comes down to the two major stores in this little town, Petro’s is our go-to. Why? Was it because the other store had a campy faux front and next to it, Petro’s oozed authenticity, a liquor store that didn’t NEED to try so hard, thus wooing our jaded big city hearts? Unlikely. Did it become our regular store because the first time we went into town seeking wine and coolers(a bizarre travelling habit of mine, don’t judge), we just happened to park closer to this place and may or may not have mistaken the one across the street for a boot store based on it’s Western faux front? Bingo. The honest truth of it is… i’m sure that other store is a decent little shop and i’m pretty sure they carry almost a carbon copy of the same stock, but I thought they sold boots and poof — Petro’s won my loyalty. Which was a win for me in that: * They have a pretty standard but fairly decent selection, including a red wine that my Aunt particularly likes, which makes choosing extremely easy. * The beer is cold. * They carry Jameson in three different sizes. If you knew me, you’d know this is a very large check in the plus column. * They overcharge for said Jameson, but not by a melt your face off amount. Thank you competition across the street. * On that note, they have a fairly decent scotch assortment for such a little spot. * They have strange tricolored shots that come pre-packaged in plastic shot glasses. They are always cream and fruit flavoured. They look horrible but they amuse me. * They still ID me, even though i’m over a decade over the AB legal limit. God bless them. * The service has always been quick and super pleasant. So for weird fluffy drinks, cold beer and red wine to appease the relatives, this places get’s a nod from me and mine.
