I’ve heard many great reviews about sushi kobo and decided to check it out. The shop is a little take out hole-in-the-wall type place, but has lots of character inside. There are imported Japanese candies, sodas and soups available for purchase too! I ordered the dynamite and mexroll, they were quite smaller than other sushi joints I have been to — but it tasted much more fresh than the others. The vegetables inside are very crisp. Random, but the wasabi is really great too. Most places wasabi are hard playdoh textured green pastes but kobo’s actually moves and tastes great. But what I must rave and will tell everyone about is the tempura, Hands down best in the whole valley. Not oily, not soggy, not thick. It’s crispy, light and delicious. I never knew I liked actual tempura before until I tried kobo’s. Every other sushi place around here I find doesn’t get it right one way or another, but sushi kobo does it perfectly.

Sam runs this wonderful little restaurant in the heart of Comox with friendly service and delicious food. I make a point to come here every time I visit the town from the mainland and I’m so glad it’s still doing well! Very authentic Japanese food!

This is pretty much a take out place, the sushi and sashimi did not seem fresh and the presentation was sub par… for the money there are better options in town.

Sadly disappointing… The crab in the spider crab roll was virtually non-existent except for the mound of deep-fried crab at the end. It was mostly lettuce & rice otherwise. The tempura prawn roll would have been ok if the mayo had been left out. Sorry folks, Nori in Nanaimo or Alberni Sushi in Port Alberni are still the best in central/north Van Isle.

It doesn’t get better than Sam. Authentic, detail oriented, and friendly. Best sushi EVER. Unless you’re there for the after dinner crowd, they usually take only 10 minutes.

Not sure why this is rated so high. Came here because of the good reviews but unfortunately it was slow(expected from reviews) not cheap, and not fresh… Oh and also the portions were relatively small. I would have preferred grocery store sushi and we went from wanting a nice sushi night to not at all. The one upside was we did not get sick… But by the taste and freshness we thought it a bit risky but were too hungry to explore other options. Still… Threw away sushi, a rare phenomenon.

When i win the lottery, my dream is to build Sam a bigger restaurant so he can feed me all the time, more efficiently, and in a comfy setting. Sam makes the best sushi on the whole island, and i like how he has chosen a civilized option for his family, but there Are too many people who crave this goodness. It’s a special treat with pre planning for dinner or some lazy mid day afternoon.

The is like a little gem hidden in comox. The sushi are creative and are price at the right price. We love the takoyaki there.(squid in a batter drizzled in mayonaise and takoyaki sauce). As a self proclaim sushi connosieur, I would say the sushi is not as good as the ones in Vancouver, but i would say is the best I have ever had on the Island. The place was crazy busy when we were there and the sushi chef(i believe he is the owner) was super nice. It was busy but he still help us set up table and chairs inside the restrurant. I had to give him bonus points for going above and beyond to serve his customers! Because good services are really rare these days. A tip is to order take out. This place is small, but just because of that shouldn’t stop you from trying take out from this place. Will definitely go back many more times!

Very good sushi with limited seating(11 inside, 8 outside) so mostly take away. Very reasonable prices. Very busy so expect a wait. But when, after finishing our initial order, I asked for awabi nigiri(abalone), Sam, the ebullient sushi master, presented me with not only the awabi but with a pair of wonderful sake nigiri(salmon). Fresh and very tasty.

Best sushi I’ve found in the Comox Valley. Owner’s a great guy. Quite busy which seems to keep it super fresh. Tip — get it to go, along with a couple of Japanese beers from the beer store across the street. Tuna sashimi melted in my mouth — that’s always the ultimate test of a sushi place for me… How good are the basics. Can’t go wrong here.

Like the other reviewer said, this place is very, very small, with very, very slow service. Why the four stars then? Because if you’re looking for takeout sushi in Comox, this is a great choice… Having lived in Vancouver for 8 years prior to moving to Comox, some of the island sushi joints are a bit wanting. But Kobo delivers the goods… this is pretty high-grade sushi, prepared with care and precision, with reasonable prices, considering. Just be aware it closes very early in the winter, and you likely have a 45 minute to hour wait for most orders.

Yum yum YUM in my tum tum TUM! I used to live in Vancouver, home of the Good Sushi™ and this place gives almost anywhere in Vancouver a run for it’s money. I’m a big fan of sushi, have eaten it pretty much everywhere I’ve traveled(not such a good idea that), and I’m thrilled that there’s a great place to get it in my home town. The restaurant is *tiny*. Seats 8 – 9 maybe. So plan on take-out, and if you’re ordering dinner, give yourself at least an hour and a half for your meal to be ready to be picked up. Sam and the staff at Sushi Kobo are super friendly, lovely people. If you like sushi you can’t go wrong with Sushi Kobo.
