Me and my hubby are absolutely horrible at picking out matching colours. For walls, for furniture, for bed stuff — you name it. We were to get possession of our new house on Feb. 2, and the painters were coming in on the 4th. We also had to let the painters know what colours we wanted on the 2nd. It’s hard to choose colours without looking at the samples in the rooms you want to paint. We went in to Benjamin Moore(in Coquitlam) a little wide eyed and a lot lost. We had previously attempted to match Ben Moore colours on our own in the past, with a disastrous greeny-yellow/dusty brown combo. This time, we asked for help. Turns out it was the owner, Mr. Hogan, who saw our total deer-in-headlights expressions and came to help. I can’t say it enough — this guy is just amazing. And I know, when I read stuff like this on Unilocal,I assume it’s a planted review or fake. Who really cares that much, right? But honest to goodness, Mr. Hogan spent time with us, over two days, to come up with some seriously awesome colour combos, ideas, tips for how to furnish with accent colours, and even just different techniques for other things like decks and if you have rough/crappy walls. The guy has got a gift. I believe he coached sports before, but his calling is in colours. The store has all different real life examples of colour combos, complimentary shades, and different ways to apply the paint. At first we weren’t sure how to get to the store, but you just take Schoolhouse across Lougheed, and it turns into Woolridge. Right at the roundabout and you come up to it on the left. We went with his advice for our master bedroom — an awesome calming green and a hemp accent wall. We also used a nice brown«sisal» in what is going to be our storage room. At the last minute, we found out that our painters were going to charge us hourly to do our nursery in two colours, so we bailed on the combo he suggested and used one colour instead. Bad mistake. We should have listened to him. We figured«pale sea mist» was a happy medium between the dill green and lighter accent. The«sea mist» just kinda looks like baby puke(this is what happens when we pick colours on our own… FAAAAAAIL!). At least it will match the baby’s puke, lol. Anyway, Benjamin Moore paint is low or NOVOC(volatile organic compound) which means it won’t off-gas noxious chemicals into your house for years and years. It’s good quality stuff. I used to not care, just want the cheapest crap from Home Depot or Canadian Tire, but this paint is worth it. There is also low-odour available, so it doesn’t reek in the house while it’s drying. The paint, in the more durable finishes, can withstand washing and wiping. I also didn’t use to care about that, then our great dane exposed us to the world of caked on doggy drool, and all of a suddent paint wiping off with a cloth scrubbing became a problem. Anyway, no one is probably reading this long, rambling bit. But if you need to paint, go to Mr. Hogan at Coquitlam Benjamin Moore paint. He’s a good guy, he cares, he cares that his staff works efficiently, he is great at suggestions and picking colours, he’s personable, and they are able to help you right away. No waiting for 20 minutes for help at the Depot. No crap paint that needs 8,000 primer coats. It is worth it. The paint may be more than the average can of Behr, but it is WORTHIT. Now, what to do with our pukey nursery…
