Cumberland has quite a history… turn left at Royston, if driving up Vancouver Island from Victoria, & enjoy a time tunnel yesteryear experience… this was a thriving coal mining centre in the 1920s. Can get here from Courtenay, too… just follow the signs. On a sunny early September day, I found this interesting coffee shop(they use Royston Coffee roasted beans), which offers great selection of coffee/tea goodies, plus easy lunches… in what looks to be the old post office, a solid two storey stone building with great presence. Tables outside on the pavement offered a lovely glimpse of mainstreet Cumberland, and one could imagine those early days. I would go again… welcoming servers, eclectic & delicious fare, & a feeling that we could have zipped over to Kerrisdale’s 41st Avenue, just for a second… that kind of fare & ambiance. On tranquil Vancouver Island, though, and just a little off mainstream… adventure on!
