I’m a fan of Glen Eagle. Their food is stellar and is very reasonably priced. They have saved me on more than one occasion when I needed a dessert and didn’t have time to make anything. They have multiple locations and have always given me friendly service.

Straight up? This place isn’t one of my favourite dessert destinations. But, you have to remember that I’m in the minority here… so you’ll definitely want to try them out for yourself. You know those people who buy lovely new stuff for their house and then never let anyone use it because they don’t want it to get ruined? Specific, I know, but that’s exactly how I feel when it comes to Gleneagle treats. They’re just to pretty, too perfect, too haute, for me to feel like I can pick something up for your average Monday night. That said, I can see how their baked goods would easily make you the superstar of any potluck or special occasion once you show up with that cardboard box in tow.

Just a great little neighborhood coffee shop… oh yes, I forgot to mention the best pastries, from sticky buns to dense blueberry/cranberry muffins. They combine the retro sugar cookie with muffins and buns. Great smells and you can sit and enjoy two mugs without feeling rushed. Check it out!

I’ve enjoyed Glen Eagle’s baked good since I was a child. My mom doesn’t bake so often when we had company over she would pick up dessert from here. One of my grandmother’s loves the vanilla cake with lemon filling and the other is a fan of cheesecake, so those are the two options I’ve had the most. The cakes are really good, not over the top, covered in fondant crazy cakes, but good, classic style cakes. My favourite treat from here is their chocolate dreams, an individual moist chocolate cake coated with a thick, chocolate ganache glaze. They also make breads daily, and I do enjoy their pan rolls a lot. The prices are a bit on the high side, and because I bake, I won’t plunk down the money for something I can make for 1⁄5 of the price, but I am always happy when I go home for a family dinner and see the Gleneagle box in the fridge.

I would have to argue that the Gleneagle Bakery is the premier bake shop in Dartmouth(although it’s located in Cole Harbour). The bakery does it all, a veritable hodge-podge of baked goods and deli style lunches. If your sweet tooth is calling, one half of Gleneasgle sells cakes, breads, cookies, and other various sweets. The other half sells sandwiches, fresh pizza, salads, and ready made pastas. It’s a great place to stop in for a quick lunch if you want to keep quality and healthy options in mind. On the bakery side I love the chocolate dipped florentines, and have stopped by a few times for these alone. The tarts and cookies are also fantastic. On the deli side I can’t say enough about the chicken baguette. Marinated chicken slides, tomato, and lettuce adorn a fresh french baguette. Inside a secret spread provides a tangy and sweet explosion of flavor. I’m guessing it’s an closely guarded mayo/pesto concoction. If you’re not quick the baguettes do sell out. Supposedly they’re one of the most popular items. The pasta and salads are also delicious alternatives if you find yourself baguette-less. Although the price is on the medium to high end, it’s worth it(when I went this week the chicken baguette was 6 $). The only downside is it’s location, where it can be a little tricky to get in and out of the parking lot and back onto Portland Street, especially during the dinner rush hour.

Cake is probably my biggest weakness. I try not to give into this craving too often, but when I do, I have to be very careful how I go about it. For example, if I grab a box of 6 cupcakes from the supermarket, I will eat all 6 within 2 days. I can’t seem to help myself. So I’ve started making an occasional trip to Gleneagle Bakery in Cole Harbour, so I can pick up one or two cupcakes when the craving comes calling. Their cupcakes definitely hit the spot — simple, moist, delicious and just the right amount of frosting(not too much). Some places try to make cupcakes into an art form, and at times I’ll go for that. But I find too much frosting or competing flavours and textures ends up taking away from the old-fashioned pleasure of a good cupcake. I’ve tried a few other sweets here as well, and have never been disappointed.

German style bakery. Mike the owner actually studied German style baking in Germany and brought his knowledge to little ‘ol Cole Harbour. From bread to cakes to pastries they do it all and with all natural ingredients. The baked goods are a little pricey, but the expression«you get what you pay for» certainly applies to this bakery. The atmosphere in the store is bright and cheery with large windows at the front of the building allowing for lots of natural light. Clean! Something we take for granted but often only notice when it’s not.

This is a great little spot nestled into your average strip mall in Cole Harbour. You will find treats like full sized cakes, nanaimo bars and eclairs, plus breads galore ranging from French baguettes to square loaves of whole wheat. You can grab a cuppa-joe or a mug full of tea, or else have a soda or a juice. Swing into the adjacent market style shop, where you can get pizza slices, sammies and quiches, as well as a variety of cold salads. The quality is pretty descent — I wouldn’t say that they’re baking and cooking with high calibre ingredients, but it’s enjoyable nonetheless. This is a highlight on the Cole Harbour sweet-treat scene. Not only can you get goodies but you can get coffee that isn’t Tim Hortons’ — what a relief.
