If you don’t give this place 5 stars, you haven’t traveled enough to appreciate such an amazing establishment! I can’t even begin to tell you how impressed I was with Duchess. I bake a lot and definitely appreciated how skillful they are here, and how well made everything was. Not to get overly technical, but from their macarons to tarts and pastries, it is freaking amazing! I come to Edmonton around one or two times a year and I will be back every time. I could not recommend a place more!

Always a treat. I wish every food maker in Edmonton took flavouring and taste as seriously as this business. This is a true high-point for Edmonton cuisine.

I haven’t been here in awhile and wow oh wow does this place get busy on the weekends! My friend and I came here late on a Saturday afternoon. We were lucky enough to find a table but the line up to order was insanely long. I left my jacket at our table so that we could order. By this point in the day, the selection of goodies is considerably less than if you were to go in the morning. Lots of delectables were sold out which was disappointing but we managed to find some treats. I ordered the butter tart and a cappuccino and my friend ordered this lovely dessert that had baked pear, crème and spices layered in a jar(don’t remember the name) and an americano. Both of us were very happy with our selections and were well worth the wait. The crust of the butter tart was perfection — firm, buttery and flaky. The filling was delicious. It wasn’t too sweet and the raisins were fresh. The cappuccino was also very good. However, it was a little on the cooler side than I would have liked. If I come back here on the weekend, I will definitely come in the morning and hope that it isn’t so busy. Ironically, because it is so busy I am not inclined to come here often. I do think this is a wonderful place though and the quality of pastries is excellent.

No matter how busy it is, you MUST make time for the baked goods Heaven that is Duchess! And honestly, the line looks intimidating, but those folks know how to get you in and out of there as quickly as they can. Not to mention the best cookies and chocolate cake I have ever tasted. Don’t be worried about the overwhelming amount of choice in the glass windows, you simply can’t go wrong with any of their desserts. Seriously. Go. Right now. Skip dinner. Go get a cheesecake-filled croissant and call it a day.

I come to Duchess monthly. It’s a wonderful café and bakery. Good food, drinks and atmosphere. Sadly the cleanliness is sometimes lacking due to the number of people who come through. Would be nice if the management/owners placed more emphasis on cleaning the seating area. Would also be nice if someone brought drinks out as someone else picked up my cappuccino inadvertently.

If you go here for anything, please go try the macarons(Rose flavored? What?!)! They are a little slice of heaven and easily one of my favorite things. The meringues are a close second. Everything so great there those just happen to top the list. I also love the little store they have next door now. Great for Christmas gifts! The cookbook is a must have! And if you can get it signed by the author it’s even better!

When is this place not BUSY!!! Well when you are on the list on Buzzfeed as one of 23 Bakeries Around the World You Need to Eat at Before You Die, I get the traffic problem. It’s usually hard to find a seat in here as it’s always bustling. I was in here to pick dessert for date night as a thank you to the beau for cooking me dinner. I picked up the Mon Chéri Verrine which was packaged in a cute glass jar with chocolate espresso crémeux, hazelnut financier, cherry gelée, cocoa nibs, and candied hazelnuts. I also got a little greedy and also decided to pick up the Mont Blanc Macaron Gâteau cause who can say no to a macaron cookie top and bottom filled with chestnut cognac cream, chantilly and toasted almond buttercream? Let’s be serious here! Well date night was 2 thumbs up and this was a perfect way to top the evening. Love you Duchess!

The duchess definitely bakes excellent products. We tried autumn tart which was delicious and excellent texture. We also tried key lime tart, which was way too sweet. And a milk chocolate scone. The setting reminds me of high tea places. We always went on the afternoon of weekends, so tons of people lining up, hard to find a place to sit, very few selections remaining. The prices seems quite outrageous. It is hard to justify to myself spending 8 $ per item at the end of the day. Don’t get me wrong, the quality is great. But it seems I am paying a lot for the ambience and the brand name. Just down the street there is another bakery called the Dutch bakery. Very low key, no places to sit, but everything is made fresh and at ½ price of the Dutchess. Unless I have friends I want to impress, I probably will go to the Dutch bakery from now on.

Duchess Bake Shop is an Edmonton staple. You pretty much need to at least TRY it if you’re living here. I like to come here with my friends and chit chat about life and eat really high calorie things so I can feel bad about my diet later. If you’re going to eat something here it needs to be the Macaroons. They’re to die for. If you’re going to drink something here it needs to be the Chai Latte. It’s delicious. The atmosphere and décor is also adorable. I like to sit on the old school couches and camp there for like 2 hours. I think the staff is friendly and they bring you your treats so you don’t have to do too much walking.

After reading dozens of Unilocal reviews praising this place I figured it was about time I gave it a shot. The interior is beautiful and made me feel like I was in an old style tea room on an episode of Downtown Abbey. The staff are both courteous as well as prompt and I was greeted right as I was coming in the door. Their baked goods cases are huge and it looked like they offer quite a few different selections but this is where I ran into my first issue. It was shortly after lunch and there was very little left to pick from. I am sure they must only bake once at the start of the day which is fine but I could never see myself bringing friends in here in the afternoon as it would mean risking that someone might be left out due to not being able to find a treat to enjoy. I ended up getting their bubbly pink lemonade drink as well as a mini caramel cheesecake with nuts in it. The drink was really good and so was the cheesecake. I had to take it to go though as it was extremely busy and there is not that much seating in the dining area. A couple of strollers at a table near the register infact made it a headache to move around in that area and I was grateful to be able to leave the congestion. I see why people love it and give it five stars but it just did not do it for me personally. I would not mind coming in again if I was with someone who was eager to try it but there are other places I prefer when im out by myself.

If you haven’t been to Duchess Bake Shop yet, you need to get in the car and drive there NOW. Not tomorrow or later or in a week or two, I mean NOW! Their lemon tarts are to DIE for and they are known for their macaroons! DUCHESS made BuzzFeed’s list of Bakeries you need to eat at before you DIE! That’s right, before you die and Duchess is the only Canadian bakery to make the list! Now, do I love everything at Duchess? No, but I sure do love most of it! The staff are extremely knowledgeable and can lead you in the right direction if you describe your craving :-) My personal faves include the lavender meringues, macaroons, and anything lemony tart! Duchess bakes everything from scratch with no fillers or pretend ingredients :-) Mmm… Butter. The little accessories store attached to the restaurant/coffee house side is adorable and full of all kinds of kitcheny gadgets and goodness to get your bake on! See you soon Duchess, see you soon!

Me & my husband went here to try out some treats… we figured this place has a good rep so we should check it out :) We shared a lemon tart, a brownie, coconut & chocolate meringues, and had some drinks too(I had a mocha & he had a latte). Everything was VERY good. The meringues were really fluffy & nice, the lemon tart was really flavourful… my mocha was great(chocolatey without being very sweet or sugary), and my husband really loved his latte(and being from Australia, where everyone’s a coffee snob, that really means a lot). This place definitely deserves its reputation!

As some of my Unilocaler friends may know, I work at a lot of events through the summer… and I get REALLY excited when I hear that I get to pick up desserts from Duchess for an event. I will admit, my experience is only with events. I have never strolled in for a coffee or a pastry and actually sat down to enjoy it on the spot. I’ll have to get on that soon, though. The ordering process is always quick and efficient. The staff are always very friendly and make suggestions if we’re not sure exactly what we’ll need or how many. Most recently, a co-worker was planning a surprise party for her twin sisters’ 30th birthday and enlisted my help. Of course, this was the bakery we chose for desserts and we ordered 7 assorted pies and cakes. They made great recommendations to make sure we got enough and the guests would be satisfied with the assortment. If I remember correctly, the final selections were: The Duke Cake, The Duchess Cake, Lemon Meringue Pie, Lemon Tart, Coconut Cream Pie, the macaron cake(I don’t remember the flavour…), and a Blueberry/Saskatoon Berry pie. There were approximately 60 people in attendance and they simply DEVOURED the desserts. There were quite a few guests who had come in from out of town — some of them were so impressed, they were determined to make it to the bakery before they left town the next day to check out their other offerings. When I went in to pick up the order, the staff member who helped me, made sure to open each box and let me look to make sure we got everything we ordered. She then put all the cake boxes into bags and helped me out to my car with them. This was around 4:30 pm on a Saturday afternoon and the bakery was full of people. They definitely go above and beyond when it comes to customer service.

THE best bakery in the city!!! Brioche Pepin, Verrine, and Key Lime Tart are my favourite here. Highly recommended!!! — – 31 Mar, 2014 — – One of the best places to eat, period. The only thing i was not a fan so far are the macaroons and cookies. Too sweet in my opinion…

Personally I find Duchess to be slightly overrated. Don’t get me wrong, it’s alright but it’s absolutely not the best bakery in Edmonton. In fact, their croissants are terrible(super dry and flakey). Their macaroons are great as are a few other items I’ve had over time but I don’t think they’re so great that it’s worth getting there first thing in the morning before everything sells out. Because, if you anytime past a couple hours after opening they’re out of everything.
