I have such fond memories of this library. I frequented this library the most during my 7 years of schooling(Science and Nursing Degrees) many years ago. After disastrous attempts of studying at Cameron Library and few studying sessions at the John Scott Health Sciences library, I tried Rutherford and found it was the best place for me. I am not sure if it is currently the same, but at that time they had a row of single desks on floors 3 – 5(not sure about floor 2), that were beside windows that looked over the atrium between Rutherford North and South. This was the study haven for me. And having an Arts minor, I spent time getting books there. I spent time in Rutherford North as well, but not that much. I loved Rutherford. Best place to study!

This is the Humanities and Social Sciences Library on the University of Alberta campus. It includes a number of great study areas, books and resources(including music and other multimedia items), but computers and printers. This building also contains the School of Library and Information Studies and the Bruce Peel Special Collections Library. Art exhibits are often on display in the atrium between Rutherford North and South. I have spent considerable time in various locations within these buildings and I can vouch for the awesomeness of having them on campus.

The university has a plethora of study spaces, but for me Rutherford is the best. Rutherford South offers many options of plug-ins for your laptop though there could be more. The ground floor spaces tend to be noisier that floors 2 – 5. My imagination loves the tight narrow lines of bookshelves on the floors. It reminds me of scenes from Ghostbusters. I half expect Slimer to pop out any second. Speaking of ghost stories, Rutherford North has the distinction of being the only place in my life where I felt like I had a semi-haunted experience. Many years ago I was in the basement looking at some rare books and heard faint whispering in the background. There appeared to be nobody else in the vicinity, but there were clear sounds of a whispered conversation going on. It made the hairs on the back of my head stand up and I still get a little spooked when using the basement washrooms in the North. Of course the experience coincided with having been up the entire previous night finishing off a paper, so the psyche was a bit scrambled! The reading room in Rutherford North is my favourite place to study. It’s quiet but not too quiet and it’s got a ton of character.
