This place is delicious! Good pricing, lots of options, great service, and really quaint inside. The staff are super helpful in helping you decide what to order and their reviews of the items you may be asking about to decide on what to get are thorough and i felt, very correct.

First impressions were not great. We were ignored for 7 minutes, not even a hello. When we finally got seated, ordered and got our food, it was just heaven from that point on. We ordered the pad Thai(peanuts on the side because I’m allergic). It was so fresh and delicious with bug pineapple chunks. The green curry with basa was medium spice and so flavourful. Pad Thai with chicken(shrimp on the side because I’m allergic to life). This is one of the best pad Thai I’ve ever had and the only one I can compare it to is the one from Opal Thai in Hawaii. My husband said not a single word during dinner which meant it was delicious. Or he was mad at me. But I’m pretty sure he’s not mad at me so we will go with delicious. Not a fan of the service but would definitely go back again and again for the amazing food.

There are two locations for this restaurant: Calgary trail and downtown. The Calgary trail location is extremely hard to find parking as you are not allowed to park in the strip mall beside and there is no street parking for this reason I would recommend eating at the downtown location. I have eaten at Syphay multiple times and am never disappointed with the quality. The curries here are amazing and are truly authentic. I have tried recreating the green curry at home and always fail. This is my go to place for green curry and coconut rice. Delicious.

Do yourself a favour and go to Syphay with someone(because sharing is better) and order a juice to cut the heat and prep yourself for the spice, a Tom Kha Chicken Soup, a Pad Thai w/chicken and shrimp, a green curry w/beef, 2 orders of Coconut Rice and if you’re really hungry, the Basa fish. Finish off with an iced coffee for dessert and enjoy the leftovers for the next couple days! You’re welcome!

We came here for the first time a couple days ago. We heard so many good things about Syphay we decided to check it out and see if it were true. We’ve been by this place many times and it looks crummy on the outside. I was actually surprised by how elegant it was inside. The dining area is small but it is clean and tastefully decorated. I really liked the elephants embroidered on this table cloths; I thought it was cute. We arrived right at the start of dinner so it wasn’t busy(yet). Our waitress was nice and gave recommendations on mild spicy dishes. I can’t remember the name of the dish I ordered but it was a curry made with coconut broth, chicken, green peppers and other items I didn’t recognize. I actually enjoyed the broth more than any thing else. The hubster had the pad Thai. It was pretty good and had a sweetness to it. Overall, it was nice coming here; the food and service were good.

My new favourite restaurant. Small cute and looks like a hole but the atmosphere inside is small and cozy. Staff is very friendly and super kind. The food is simply amazing!!!

This Syphay location doesn’t look like much from the outside, but on the inside, it’s actually pretty cute. The parking is in the back. I have been to Syphay a few times now and I keep coming back because of the intense cravings I get for the Shu-Shee(spelling of this may be wrong) dish with chicken. It’s a sweeter dish that pairs really well with coconut rice. I also really like the Pineapple Shrimp Rolls as an appetizer(these are DEFINITELY unhealthy and definitely worth the calories!). The service here is a bit hit or miss. It’s impossible to get a hold of them to make a reservation. The last time that I was here, we ordered our favourites and pointed to the menu items to make sure that the server got it all. She wrote it down but then had to come back about 3 times to verify our order. I’m glad she did because every time that she did, it turned out that she had our order completely wrong. Everything came out okay in the end though!

First things first, the outside of this restaurant looks like a complete dive and if it’s your first time(like me today) you might be wondering if you’re at the right place or asking why on earth someone suggested Syphay. Once you walk in the door though the restaurant is much nicer and feels more like a quaint little hole in the wall. The food is actually quite good and decently priced. Despite there only been one waitress, who was a little slow at the beginning(due to having to take cash, clean tables, serve tables, etc), we got our food quickly and service was okay. My brother ordered the pad Thai and I got the lunch special(rice, choice of curry and 4 spring rolls for $ 13.50). Both dishes were good and authentic — pad Thai used tamarind but it wasn’t over powering. I would definitely come back to this place again. Forewarning though, parking is SUPER limited and only available in the back or next door after 5pm.

It doesn’t look very exciting from the outside. Parked next door by Tropika. Signs everywhere saying if you park here and go to Syphay you’ll risk being towed! Usually I ignore those signs. Entering the front door of Syphay there’s another sign– Don’t park next door! Ok I got it. So I park in the back! :) Not a lot of parking. Simple décor inside. Excellent service! Fast and friendly! I asked them to make it a bit on the spicy side. It was on the edge of tolerance zone. But I must say one of the best Panang curries I’ve ever had. The pad Thai had a great texture and flavor. It wasn’t too sweet. Will definitely come back!

The best thing about this place is that it is super sketchy looking on the outside, so when you finish your deliciously tasty and authentic Thai-Laos meal, you feel like you’ve discovered the biggest hidden gem ever. Syphay is located in a run-down looking white(well, more greyish white because of all the dirt) building beside a strip mall on Calgary Trail. Inside is much more inviting with Thai décor and tapestry. Service has always been pleasant and prompt. My faves(though I’ve yet to have anything bad there!) include: * Pad Paa Phit — their only fish dish, Basa fish stir-fried with a chili-coconut milk sauce and veggies. It’s sweet and a teeny bit spicy. Pairs really well with coconut rice. * Pad Thai — the real, authentic stuff with Tamarind sauce like you get in Thailand. Not the fake sweet and sour stuff that is so prevalent in North America. * Pineapple Curry Goong — pineapple lends a nice sweet and tartness that complements coconut milk, kaffir lime leaves and shrimp very well! Again, go with the coconut rice. * Tohm Kha(Light Coconut Soup) with Chicken — you really can’t go wrong with anything coconut milk, but this is a nice mix between creamy, a teeny bit spicy, and fragrant(from the lemongrass). * Salad rolls(Vietnamese style) with peanut sauce are solid as well. * Thai Iced Tea — like all Thai iced teas, they come in a disgustingly creamy shade of orange but taste like a delicious vanilla tea If the location skeeves you out(I promise, the interior is more inviting than the exterior!), they do take-out too, and have always been fantastic and prompt in that regard. My favourite Thai/Laos place in the city!

DONOTJUDGEFROMTHEOUTDOORS! Sure its a shanty on the outside, but the inside is quit nice, good ambiance, very clean, my wife went with her friend and loved it so much she went back not long after, its a 40 min drive so I thought it must be good, we later went for our anniversary, we had the spring rolls which were delicious, then we both had the green curry, it is soooo fresh and flavourful, spicy curry with coconut, yum yum, we’ve recommended it to all our friends and family, we will be going back soon. P. S parking is difficult.

Great Thai food. The green curry, pad Thai and Thom ka soup salad rolls were all very tasty. The pad Thai had a bit of a kick so if u don’t like spice then get the pad lau instead. The spring rolls weren’t my favourite though. We also had the Chrissy chicken dish with pineapple sweet and sour sauce and that dish was very good and if your not a spice person this dish is for you

My mother dragged me away from our normal Indian night and wanted to try this place. Pleasantly surprised. Ended up getting a tofu rice bowl. Went with the coconut rice. Fantastic. No one but me was able to finish, nice big portions. Well seasoned. My mother paid, so not sure about price. She’s a gem. Protip: Don’t get the«Thai Iced Tea.» It’s legit just a can of Brisk. Seriously. They give you a can of Lipton’s.

You’ll rediscover the meaning of simple pleasures here with the friendly staff and amazing food. The restaurant is located on Gateway Blvd south in an old house that’s not really appealing however, the fabulous dishes are full of flavour and affordably priced. The Pad Thai was well seasoned with a wonderful texture to the rice noodles and not overly sweet, like other Thai restaurants. Everything was spot on! It’s 5 star dining with elegant, colourful and imaginative dishes.

If you’ve driven South on Calgary Trail at any point in time while you’re in Edmonton, you’ve driven by Syphay and not given it a second glance. It’s a small restaurant tucked between a strip mall and an office building that doesn’t look that impressive. But as we all know, it’s what’s inside that counts. I first went to this restaurant on a Dishcrawl(otherwise I would not have honestly set foot in here, because A) I didn’t know it existed and B) It doesn’t look that good outside), but have been back several times since. The place is always packed at dinner time, and there is take away flying out the door at the same time. The food is hot, fresh and with great portions. And when you go, try the Thai Iced Tea. It looks like you’re drinking a creamsicle, but it is the most refreshing drink, with a smooth, milky black tea taste. It goes with EVERYTHING! Just know, when something says it’s spicy, it will definitely clear your sinuses. I love a bit of heat, and this doesn’t let me down! Google map it, find some parking(it’s tight!), and give it a go. You will not be disappointed! There’s also a location downtown, which I haven’t been to. I can’t say it’s better, worse or the same, but I would try it as well!

Yum Love their curry’s and their Thai iced tea. My fav is the pineapple goon and they even have a meat salad haha.(lap sin) Service is slow because it seems like there is only one waitress. But it’s worth it.

Syphay was restaurant number 2 while restaurant hopping with three friends. Restaurant hopping is where you go for appetizers at one restaurant, main course at a second restaurant and dessert at a third restaurant. It’s a fun, special occasion event. We’d already had success with appetizers at The Bothy and now we were going to Syphay for a main course. I’d wanted to come to Syphay since my friend(fellow Unilocaler and restaurant hopper Carley G.) raved about it going to Syphay during a dish crawl. As we approached the restaurant my other friends were worried, because the south side location of Syphay is, well a bit dingy on the outside. Inside, however, the restaurant is small yet bright. It looks like they’re doing a bit of renovations on the interior as well. We got seated quickly got our drinks. Everyone stuck to nonalcoholic drinks during this round. I had a lychee juice that was sweet and delicious. I love lychee flavoured anything(actually eating lychee seems intimidating to me). I do not remember the name of the dish I ordered, but I know it was number 38. It was rice noodles, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts with peanuts, cilantro and red curry. The food took a while to come out, but that was fine because we were in no rush(we had a couple hours to kill). It also made me think the kitchen was, you know actually taking time to prepare the dishes. The wait(maybe about 20 or 30 minutes) was well worth it. Our food came out and the first thing I did was divide my dish into half, because I knew I would get too full if I ate it all. We did have one more restaurant to hit after Syphay; plus I’d get delicious Thai food leftovers for lunch. I love Thai food and the dish I had was delicious a little spicy(not too bad though), fresh, and filling. Everyone in my group enjoyed their meals, even my friend who cannot handle anything spicy, the server was great at making sure she had a dish she’d enjoy. I noticed another reviewer on Unilocal mentioned MSG. I’m pretty sensitive to MSG(I usually get a headache within 15 minutes after eating anything with MSG), but I didn’t get any headaches or reactions after finishing my meal at Syphay. The outside of Syphay might make people scratch their heads and say«really? here?» but you should go. The food is delicious, portions big, and prices are good. I’m filing our encounter at Syphay under S for Success.
