After visiting the Festival of Trees at Shaw Conference Centre we all decided to have a quick lunch downtown before heading back to work. I decided to Unilocal what was close and this place popped up! Expecting something a little more casual I was a little taken back when we arrived. I luckily was dressed up a little more than usual, otherwise I would have felt a little underdressed. This is where the business crowd comes to dine on their lunch hour… Not your average business crowd, the ones that order fine bottles of wine and posh cocktails! They offer still and sparkling water at no cost, I like bubbles! Their drink/wine menu is classy and sophisticated. Offering a great selection of wines and an amazing cocktail list. Reviving some classics and twists on some oldies. The difficulty is choosing one! The food here is incredible! It’s where fine dining meets comfort food. I ordered the Buttermilk Chicken sandwich with pan fried potatoes and a crisp slaw. It was absolutely delicious! The onion jelly was my favourite part. Service here is exactly what I look for in a restaurant! Attentive and precise without being overbearing. Anticipate my needs and don’t hover!

We went here as a group of three women interested in some downtown fine dining. Did not disappoint. The atmosphere was the best part, warm lighting. historical building, busy with many well dressed customers. We had the Cauliflower as per many reviewer recommendations and we highly recommend it as well. The appy size Ribs were enough for a meal(for me) and very tender and flavourful. And all the food went nicely with the Prosecco :) Lots of dairy free options for me. Well done. Do arrive with plenty of time to find parking though!

Comfort food at its finest. Amazing cocktail menu. Easy online reservation system. Subpar service. Hip atmosphere. Cool crowd. I have frequented tavern 1903 since opening. I love going for lunch bc its a real treat to have those comforting meals mid day. But I also enjoy going there for dinner as well. As I said before this place has a dark romantic hip feel to it. Its actually has that old elegance to it. Chandaliers with moulded ceilings and dark redwood. Most diners are young or middle aged wearing suits and dresses to eat. I frequent this place often for their mozzarella bar. Their cheese assortment is probably the best ive ever had anywhere. Im addicted to the buffalo mozzarella and the burrata cheese. Omigod they are so smooth and always have the perfect saltiness to them. With the crostinis and the three spreads provided the dish is simply marvelous. I could eat only just cheese here. Its so good and everyone at our table agreed. A must order on any visit! We also tried the korean fried cauliflower which was delicious a sweet spicy sauce with a crisy cauliflower. Fantastic. My friend who regularly visits korea says it tastes exactly like korean fried chicken minus the chicken. It was a crowd pleaser and was perfect for sharing. Ive tried the crab cakes which were good too. For mains we shared the truffled lobster mac and cheese. Which for $ 20 was huge and always worth it. Its creamy and highly addictive. Everyone at the table loved it. Its been my favourite dish for years at hardware grill for a reason. And since this is a sister restaurant of hardware… im glad it made a permanent item on the menu. We also tried the red wine braised short rib. Which was so tender you didnt need a knife, although a bit more sauce would be nice. It was sweet and the sauteed corn and truffle parmesan cheese fries were a perfect accompanient. Desserts were good too. The maple bacon glazed donuts were hot and fresh with tons of bacon flavour. They were savoury and really filling. Not the greatest for me but a hit for everyone else. I personally like the cheesecake it was a milky watery version and was not overly sweet. The thin texture was different to what I am accustomed to. It was more like a custard than a cheesecake. But nothing worth minusing a star. Overall I have to bring tavern down from the five star rating because of the subpar service. It seems so overly busy and servers just dont have that personal flare to make you feel like you treated yourself to a great dinner. Its constantly missing on this point after several visits. Hardware grill has it perfected but the sister restaurant struggles to even maintain okay service. Its not awful service but its definetly a bit haphazardly executed. Like when I order a drink it takes two visits from our server to remind him of our orders or if we need the cheque he comes by twice without it… its kinda repetitive and we are only understanding bc it is super busy. But to be five stars they need to fix this. Maybe an extra busboy to clear tables and fill waters would take a little stress off the busy servers. I want to give the place five stars… but its not a five star place if its constantly plaqued by slow service that feels rushed and forgetful. Otherwise I love tavern 1903 and hope it stays for good for its inventful unique comfort foods. Using great ingredients simply showcases the great food which speaks for itself. Food is always fantastic and I must say the mozza bar will forever bring me back again and again.

Tavern 1903 isn’t in the greatest location, though once you walk in you know you’re going to be getting something special. I love this place for a date night — the service is spectacular and you never feel like you’re being rushed at all. Though I’ve only been for dinners, I would easily pick Tavern 1903 for cocktails/wine/and appetizers with a friend or coworker. Last time I came we started with their Mozzarella and it was SOGOOD. This time R and I opted for dessert. Their bacon glazed donuts were delish, but I think I liked them better(GASP) without the bacon on them. I had the salmon, R had the steak and we were both extremely satisfied with our meals. I wish I took pictures not only were they delicious they were also very appealing to look at on the plate. The only downside is I can never find parking in the area, so I’ve had to walk a block or two for a meter — this time I had some drunk guy hitting on me and then another drunk ran smack into my car because he «didn’t see it there» Weird. though no fault of the restaurants!

Smallish food menu, largeish drink menu. Just the way I like things. After an afternoon battling crowds at the Taste of Edmonton my boyfriend and I felt like something a bit more grown up to cap off the day so I suggested a stop here knowing that his love of old timey things would probably make Tavern a hit with him and I was 100% correct. We opted to sit at the bar instead of out on their patio(my skin can only handle so much sun in a day and unfortunately it isn’t very much) and we enjoyed every minute of it. We chatted constantly with all of the staff behind the bar, took drink recommendations from them and talked about all of the things to do in Edmonton with our server who had moved here from Ontario fairly recently. Every single staff member that we encountered was friendly, knowledgable and not at all pretentious. Wonderful service. Bone marrow is something that Chris had always wanted to try which is another reason why I suggested stopping here, I knew they had it on the menu. We ordered that and the house made ricotta and were in absolute heaven. Both dishes were perfection and just the right size. I am not a beer drinker(and never ever will be) but Chris was happy with both selections he made and I ordered the Meathook which had a scotch so smoky in it that I felt like I was smoking a cigarette when I exhaled. It made me feel very grown up… even more so that I couldn’t even finish it because I had to drive. Tavern, we will be back sooner than later to sample more delights from both your food and drink menu. Next time we’ll cab it so I can finish my drink, though.

Tavern 1903 offers, in my opinion, the best atmosphere and environment for having casual drinks and snacks. The bar is amazingly beautiful and they have the most interesting men’s urinals I’ve ever seen(Yes, I went there). If you are female and want a tour, ask and they will try to arrange it. Tavern 1903 is the offspring of Hardware Grill and Larry has done a great job of picking every single item throughout the place. The food is excellent as are the cocktails. I see some reviewers complaining about bad seating and issues with staff but honestly, that’s never happened to us. We always go and have a wonderful time and are treated very well. Love the place, my fav in Edmonton for drinks and appies.

Big fan or Hardware grill and heard Tavern 1903 was from the same restauranteurs. The food deserved a 5 star rating but everything else fell short. We had a reservation for four and expected to be sat in the dining room. Initially they just walked us into the lounge which resembles an old cafeteria but with an elegant long bar. We objected and were able to get sat in the dining room. Server greeted us promptly and just asked what we wanted to drink. Far from the greating and rapport building you receive at the sister restaurant. The server brought out the prosecco placed the tray carrying it on the table, a big faux pas from my hospitality days. I ordered some cocktails and they were all delicious. Some of them use boutique brands of spirits, but the pricing is the same as if they were well brands. A big plus in my book. Now this is where it gets worse. We order our food after no recommendations or specials mentioned. As we wait we notice the table behind us has been in attended for 10– 15 min after being sat. As they fight to get attention our delicious mozzarella platter comes out. When we finished our server informs us that there is no clean cutlery for our mains and we need to keep our dirty ones. As well the kitchen is way behind. I applaud getting the courtesy heads up but behind meant we waited another 40 minutes. We asked her what was going on because this was at 8 pm not 5 or 6. She was quite truthful and said their patio is busy and the kitchen couldn’t accommodate the patio and inside. Now being August this should have been addressed by now. Either stagger your seating, buy more cutlery, or close a section down. All said and done no manager ever touched our table. No apologies or comments by anyone on the way out. Just a disappointing experience at this price point. I’d say go experience it from the bar seating which I’ve done previously. Get some cocktails and an appy. But DONOT take a date or plan a special evening here if its not comfortably in your price range. Let them work on improving their front of house. When it reaches the service you can expect from hardware than Tavern will be amazing.

Went back to enjoy this trendy spot. Great food but i find the seating a bit busy & tables are too small. Our table of four was very crowded & i wished the tables had a bit more space –would improve the ambiance! Food is very tasty & good amount-you definitely leave full. Had the stuffed meatballs & the gem salad… solid portions! Would go back despite the bad seating!

Visiting from LA, we had a fantastic meal here with relatives who live locally. What impressed us a lot was the use of local ingredients prepared with care and imagination. The six of us shared a number of starters that allowed us to sample the menu widely. The KFC cauliflower was a crowd pleaser, with the right balance of crunch, sweetness and spicy kick. Lots of restaurants in L A serve roasted marrow bones, and Taverna 1903’s version is just as good — if not better — than anything we’ve had at fine restaurants at home. We also tried two salads: gem and the great big salad. Both had farm fresh ingredients and were absolutely delish. The six of us shared three entrees for the second course. The short ribs were fork tender and flavorful. Salmon was a hit, well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The grilled steak also was cooked to a perfect temperature, and was very satisfying. Sides again called upon seasonal treats like pea tendrils, asparagus and roasted corn. Friendly and professional service, good wine list, lovely décor and only a short walk from the charming Hotel Macdonald where we were staying. A winner of a place and I highly recommend.

Much like North 53, there was a lot of buzz coming from Tavern 1903. From their signature cocktails to their #1 ranked place to go for desserts in Vue newspaper, I was ready to experience a new restaurant in my never ending tour of duty of eating. Located right on the edge of the less seedy side of downtown, we found parking to be absolutely atrocious. We parked quite far but didn’t mind the walk(closer to Mirama. Shout out to the old school wedding venue R.I.P!). After passing by dank taverns and inconspicuous peep show parlors, we finally arrived with no reservation in hand on a Friday night. Taking a peek inside, the lounge which most restaurants have maybe one or two tables open was jam packed. The host suggested we could either sit at the bar or be seated at the patio: the dining room was completely booked for the night. For the night! You’d think I can squeeze in at 9 or when it dies down something but booked for the night! Seeing how the weather was cooperating, we were more than happy to sit on the patio and enjoy the summer breeze. We started off with cocktails and the drink menu had an extensive list of wines, cocktails and an assortment of beers. Unlike North 53, I did not want to try my hand at anymore gin based cocktails so I ordered a refreshing watermelon mojito. Fresh squeezed watermelon with sharp mint leaves on a summer night? Yes, please! My better half decided to be more adventurous and ordered the sky hook. I had no idea what fireweed honey water is(not going to google it) but the flavor here was like James T. Kirk discovering a new planet on behalf of the federation. A non hostile one. The sky hook was charting into wonderful new taste territory. The best part of the experience was the black basil leaf which left«Thank you, come again!» «Oh I will come again!» reaction. Next up was the dinner warm up items. The KFC(Korean fried cauliflower) was plated quite nicely and the consistency of the cauliflowered was just about right: not too soft but not too undercooked. The Korean sauce was a little underwhelming but once my palette adjusted to subtle flavors, I quite enjoyed it. We also ordered the three little pigs which were pork sliders. The collision of the chipotle bbq sauce and the pork patty left a wreakage of of beautiful savory taste. I don’t think I’ve ever tasted a better slider. Finally the entrées took stage after a bit of a wait. I was pleasantly surprised at the plating of the wine braised short ribs with frites. It was compactly for pressed on the dish with a nod to an industrial small cup of parmesian truffle fries. I felt it was embodied a more tavern feel as the kitchen was fusing old 1903 charm with 2014 taste. And the taste. Wow, parmesian truffle? The best fries I’ve ever had. I thought the fries at The Marc were fantastic. Step aside son, we have a new winner. The short ribs were true to the description as it had more of a darker taste to it highlighting the black coffee scents. The meat itself was not too lean nor too fatty and was a delight. My date ordered the mozzarella stuffed pork meat balls and I’m disappointed. I’m disappointed I didn’t steal this dish because it was very memorable. The meatballs were delicious with a sweeter after taste which I can’t relate to anything I’ve ever tasted before. The cheese simply oozed out and the texture was a perfect match with the moist pork. We simply could not finish our entrées despite how good it tasted: the amounts were very adequate and I was quite sad I didn’t have time for dessert. My only knock is the table was quite wobbly making dining a little tricky and the wait between appetizer and entrée was a bit long. I will definitely be back. Dinner with appetizers and drinks clocked in at about $ 130 so save up because it is an dining experience you should at least try. TL;DR — cocktails were amazing, best fries ever, omg meatballs for the win.

One word: Canadian. Tavern 1903 is an unobtrusive blip on the Jasper Ave radar, situated on the cusp between the fancy downtown area and the sketch-town that is currently undergoing revitalization. When Andrew H. and I had belatedly realized we may have parked a little too far in the non-fancy area away from our intended destination, we scurried along so quickly that we almost missed the place. You don’t think«Canadian» when you first walk in. It looks like a pretty standard fare food establishment that flaunts what is now the typical modern interior design. However it looks cozy and inviting, rather than minimalist cold, so that’s reassuring. Too bad it’s a Friday night and we’ve arrived smack in the middle of dinner rush — 7 ish pm. We aren’t expecting a table(with no reservations — gasp!), but luckily the hostess offers us a(shaky) table on the patio. We are given the menus and that’s when you get a first glimpse of «Canadian». Maple-bacon-chipotle BBQ and other delicious stuff on pork sliders? You had me at maple-bacon. Tavern’s menu doesn’t stop there — K.F.C. No, it’s not the old man from Kentucky — it’s Korean Fried Cauliflower that’s simultaneously super crunchy, super vegetarian and super delicious. How about some fresh in-house corn bread with bacon butter? Or mozzarella stuffed pork meat balls the size of your fist?(I might be exaggerating about the size but truthfully they were pretty big.) And there it is. I’m glad that«Canadian» for the folks at Tavern doesn’t just consist of maple and bacon. It also doesn’t pretend that maple and bacon aren’t huge in what Canadians like to eat. They just acknowledge that there’s more to Canada — like its multiculturalism — and draw from that richness in diversity to create unique somethings and above all, delicious food. 4.5÷5 PS. The Skyhook — a gin-based cocktail that I enjoyed for the night was refreshing and definitely worth the try.

Came here with high expectations, but ended up underwhelmed. It was very crowded, with plenty of people seated outside. Service was very good and efficient, our waitress was very friendly and accommodating. Had the famous KFC, nice flavor of the slight spiciness over the coating. Tortilla soup was just ok. Too much tomato for my liking. Pig-nic was a nice big spread of multiple pork dishes. The ribs are the best.

After experiencing a slew of dining disappointments, we were very, very pleased with our recent night out at Tavern 1903. My boyfriend and I came here with my parents for bf’s birthday dinner. It was actually one day post-birthday because it was tough to get a reservation! This place is busy, so book ahead. To start, we had KFC(Korean Fried Cauliflower), which is my new favourite food in the whole world. My carnivorous dining companions also tried some kind of stuffed meatball dish, which they all agreed was delicious. My «Nice Big Salad» entrée was nice and big and tasty. A light dressing and lots of different flavours. The best part of the meal, though, was the truffle mac & cheese. Don’t leave Tavern 1903 without trying this. Even if you have to roll yourself home, it’s worth it.(The parmesan truffle fries are also delish, btw! But they’re no mac & cheese.) Utterly incredible food at a reasonable price; attentive and friendly service; and a great little wine list. My only, only, ONLY little complain would be that the décor in the dining room is a bit lacking. No art up on the walls — it’s a little bland! But it doesn’t take away from a fabulous five-star experience. EATHERE!

The restaurant was quite busy at 5:30 on a Thursday, but the service was excellent, the servers were smiling and attentive and readily available to answer questions or to replenish beverages etc. very nice! The food itself had great presentation, looked very pleasing on the plate. I had the potatoes crusted salmon, and it was amazing! It went really well with the salad and crab cakes that we had for appetizers. The mozzarella stuffed meatballs were also fantastic! Definitely a place to enjoy again!

It’s a little devastating when Downtown Dining Week(DTDW) is going on and I don’t work in downtown. Such great food and if done well, at a good price! Especially when lunch is only $ 15! I had only one weekday off for Edmonton’s annual downtown food frenzy, so I quickly called up Kelvin for a long overdue lunch date. Narrowed down for me, I was given the choice between Normand, Fion MacCool, or Tavern 1903. Since it’s racked up so many good reviews, from Avenue Edmonton’s Best Restaurants 2014 to food bloggers and regular food go-ers, I sort of have to try Tavern 1903. Seeing that every year I’ve been going to Hardware Grill for DTDW, this was a good choice, as Chef Stewart has jumped on over! I’ve been denied at least three attempts now for their dinner, either booking too late or Edmonton’s sudden weather changes. And what do you know, it snowed yesterday. I will no longer let snow stop me from trying Tavern 1903! The $ 15 two-course menu was simple, offering Soup of the Day or a small mixed salad to start. Kelvin got the soup, a good choice for a cold and windy day. Although I did not have a taste, he said it wasn’t as creamy as he expected. I’d take that as a good thing as I’d rather have more stock flavor and in this case, mushrooms, than the taste of cream! I ordered the small mixed greens,(overly) dressed in a pomegranate vinaigrette. I actually don’t mind an overly dressed salad, better than underdressed! The vinaigrette was nice and light and the slices of watermelon radishes added a nice crunch to things. A simple salad otherwise. The main lunch portion offered three choices: a Mac N Cheese, Alberta Pork Shoulder and Pork Belly, or a Short Rib Grilled Sandwich. Kelvin opted for the pork, which ended up being the better choice of the two. How can you go wrong with pork belly? The pork shoulder was well done, falling apart with the fork. The highlight of the dish for me was actually the side of smoky white bean ragout! Yummy! The day prior to the lunch, I had dinner and didn’t follow my rule of «do not duplicate orders with your date». Why not try a different dish, steal a bite or two of the other, and then you can try two dishes?! Alas, the dinner prior I broke the rule and got the same dish as Joe which wasn’t all too fantastic. Should have ordered another dish… so for lunch with Kelvin, I had to reinstate the rule. I usually see what other people are getting first before ordering, which left me with the tough decision of Mac N Cheese, or the Short Rib. Ahhh, Mac N Cheese, you win every time. And bonus, there was smoked hamhock as a protein. Hurray! Mixed in with green peas and a cheese sauce, pasta shells substituted for your traditional macaroni, which scooped up the cheese sauce a bit better. A great dish! And enough for a second lunch… For $ 15, I really don’t know how you can go wrong! The meal was great, service was superb, and the atmosphere was fabulous. Tavern 1903 was at maximum capacity, which shows that Edmonton is always ready to handle a little bit of snow and wind. Our main dishes were served almost simultaneously as our starters, but our server quickly apologized and said that this was not their usual style of service. Downtown Dining Week gets hectic! Kitchens are going crazy and everything is go go go! I didn’t mind. You can’t find these dishes on their regular lunch menu, although similar items(Pork Shoulder Confit Style and Truffled Mac N Cheese) can be ordered.

I went with a few people so we had a lot of food. Deviled eggs, I’m not sure I have ever had bad deviled eggs. But I liked this one, had some spice to it, very nice. Corn bread nothing to write home about, bacon butter though. I could take that home Blue crab cake, excellent. KFC unique, nice sauce. Potato crusted salmon, nice combination of perfectly cooked salmon and basically Hash Browns. Caesar salad, wife loved it, tastes like any other salad to me. Lemon confit potato, not sure what lemon confit is, but it’s God damn tasty. Truffle Mac and cheese, people lost their shit for this, tastes regular to me. My biggest issue with this place was the size of the urinals, it made my junk look real tiny. I don’t like this. Service, our server Justin was a hero, getting us refills etc. We paid 18% gratuity, well deserved.

I am comfortable with the score, however, truth be told, I had to base it on the Mac & Cheese with Lobster. The service was GREAT and the space is really nice with a wide range of people eating here, and thus would give it a 3 – 3.5 for them. So, shall I tell you about the Mac & Cheese? It was SO oily, that I can hardly believe it still… as well, I counted 5 little pieces of lobster drowning in the oily cheese that I could hardly taste the lobster IN the lobster. Thank goodness I ordered the«Nice Big Salad», which was nice… or else I would have NOT been a happy camper. The serving for the saiad was what it indicated, «big» but reasonable… the Mac & Cheese was a very large serving which made it even worse given the quality of it. I LOVE Mac & Cheese… for this reason, I was SO surprised given all the accolades this place is getting for its food… The other appetizer ordered were the Blue Crab Cakes… they were okay, not great and sorry, didn’t taste any different than any place else I have had them which is saying a lot considering what I have read about this place. I will be returning since its other«claim to fame» is the«Mozzarella Bar»… The waitress told me that they fly in the mozzarella di bufala and burrata from Toronto… so, we/I shall be returning to HOPEFULLY get over the memory of the Mac & Cheese… and yes, have cheese ;-)

The clientele at Tavern 1903 is lively and the atmosphere fosters a relaxing environment in which acquaintances can share a plate of deviled eggs, or where neighbours can peer over your shoulder in an attempt to glimpse a preview of their forthcoming dish. We started with the Smoked Deviled eggs, served with pancetta and soufflitine, along with the Buffalo Mozzarella with bacon, fennel marmalade, and sea salt from the restaurant’s Mozzarella Bar. The eggs were rich and hearty with a distinctly smoky flavour, while the mozzarella crostini hosted a beautiful combination between the sweetness of the marmalade, the saltiness of the seasonings, and the rich creaminess of the cheese itself. For those who correlate mozzarella with the shredded cheese than comes on a Panago pizza, a taste of the real stuff can come as quite a shock. Buffalo mozzarella, in particular, has a light richness to it on account of the buffalo milk that gives it something of the consistency of cooked egg whites. The flavour is very mild, which is why it goes so well with palate-tingling elements like marmalade and sea salt. Rather than head down the tapas route, we selected a variety of entrées from Tavern 1903’s dinner menu. They were all excellent and unique in their own ways, but with a noticeably limited amount of vegetables, which was the only downfall to the food. The Chicken Schnitzel was moist, though breaded, and came with a delightfully herby pair of potato waffles. The Beef Short Ribs were served with truffle fries and roasted vegetables; the tender beef flaked away with the touch of a fork, flavourful and rich. The«Pig-nic» was the show-stopper of the evening, featuring a smörgåsbord of porky goodness that included crispy pork belly, hickory smoked ribs with bourbon-molasses glaze, and pork shoulder confit-style. I ordered the Flat-Iron Steak, which sat atop a mound of roasted mushrooms and was served with a savoury-sweet bacon jam. When ordered, I wasn’t asked which temperature I preferred, aligning with the menu’s clear«We respectfully decline all substitutions» statement. This statement is one of the reasons I was so impressed with Tavern 1903: a chef with the culinary chops such as Stewart has no need to alter his creations according to the diner’s whim. The restaurant offers a gastronomic experience; diners are simply invited to try it out. FYI, my flat-iron steak was cooked to a perfect medium. While the entrées pleased, the desserts wowed. Our table shared spoonfuls of Carrot Cake in a Box, Glenlivet-Infused Butterscotch Pudding, and Cheesecake Parfait. Whisky and butterscotch delighted, moist carrot cake charmed, and the creamiest of cheesecakes completely and incontrovertibly satisfied our stomachs.

History meats suavity! Excellent, jazzy-cool-hip vibe, albeit a bit noisy. The recreated hotel is absolutely gorgeous and conjures up perfectly what the original building looked like. The bar side of the room is cool, but the dining area is equally classy without being stuffy. The menu has a few double-takes — for example, upon closer examination«KFC» is Korean-Fried Cauliflower. Anything involving house-made bocconcini is highly recommended. Goat cheese fritters manage to be light and rich at the same time. Cornbread is down home goodness replete with bacon butter. For dessert, caramel pudding with pretzel crumbs is a big ol’ cup of nostalgia reimagined on adult terms. The cocktail menu is daunting; when in doubt, ask the staff for recommendations.

Really cool new spot. You can tell they took a lot of time to come up with the menu, décor and cocktail list. The bar side is quite lively and lots of action behind the bar. Loved the burrata mozzarella from the Mozzerella Bar! Really interesting take in bringing back some classic appetizers to compliment drinks. Huge beer list. and the custom cocktails are great. Slings, Negronis, old fashioned… done with lots if care. Menu has a bit of everything. Very Alberta style home cooking done in a classy way. But not to inaccessible. Loved the ribs!
