If there is an alternative in your area that is feasible, I would suggest it. If you have a windmill, solar panels, or any other means of generating electricity, I would recommend you figure it out. This company is an evil conglomerate. EVIL!!! They hike up their prices for electricity in the winter, and summer, and they charge fees that are exorbitant, and have nothing to do with electricity. Their smart meters also make you end up paying more in the long run, because Toronto Hydro calibrates them to rip you off by charging you for electricity during times you are not using it. My mother just had to pay $ 400 in just late fees because they didn’t send her any statements. This is a terrible company. I wish those at the top some true suffering, and to fall hard when deregulation occurs.

Of course ice storms are a natural catastrophe and not the fault of the power company. What IS the fault of the power company are transformers that blow in natural disaster because they are old and not properly shielded, along with tree branches that fall on power line because the power company did not pay attention to trimming them. Of course some power outage is expected after a significant ice stom and this last storm was significant. However, it was not extraordinary. The coating on branches and trees was about 1 inch. Very different than the extremely thick icing that hit Montréal in the late 1990’s. The length of the power outages was completely unacceptable, not because the workers were not valiant in restoring service, but because proper maintenance was not done in the first place. Yet power bills continue to rise. I was without power for 74 hours and was not of the«isolated» cases where the line from a poll to a house was down. My entire neighbourhood was out that long. That should not have happened in this category of ice storm.

The reason for this 1 star is very simple. Very horrible customer service and billing. If you plan on calling them be prepared to hold for 30 minutes and then getting no info such as current usage, billing cycles, and overcharging. They charged me for the previous tenants usage and I had to fight with them to prove I only moved in recently. On top of that they require a deposit of a total of the top 3 months of the previous year. The problem with this is that they use the previous tenants usage as a guide.
