Let’s not kid ourselves, it’s grand bend, it’s 1am, it’s jam night, there’s a guy crawling on the ground across the street apologizing for how drunk he is. All very Canadian, all very small town. This Chinese food spot presents itself as the only viable option. It’s not going to be good… We order General Tao chicken, appropriately the #1 combo on the menu. It takes 4 minutes to make(which is cool I guess). The stuff sucked. The styrofoam tray had maybe 3 nuggets of sweet sticky sugar chicken(totally not enough) mixed with 15 pieces of cabbage(way too much cabbage) tucked beneath a f*** ton of super burnt fried rice. Topped with a greasy egg roll(this segg roll was endearingly«classic» and kinda made the whole dish palatable, or maybe just nostalgic?) anyway, all that said, it is grand bend, you have no other options, try to enjoy it and take solace in the fact you didn’t make a bad choice, you just made the only choice.

If you’re looking for egg rolls, sweet and(kind of) sour fried stuff, then this is the place for you. If you are looking for Pad Thai or other specialties, you might want to give it a pass. Egg rolls were good as already mentioned. Chicken balls were big chunks of breast meat in a thick batter. Sweet and sour sauce was fluorescent orange and far more sweet than sour(isn’t vinegar cheap?). Deep fried wontons were really just the skins without any spiced minced pork, but they were stuffed in a box to overflowing. The Chili beef was listed as a chefs speciality and was indicated as «spicy» on the menu. What I received were slices of beef that we’re coated in cornstarch and deep fried added to a brown sauce(slightly sweet), the odd onion piece, two small stalks of broccoli and tons of green peppers. I think that the closest a chili came to this dish is actually Beijing! Chili Beef should not be the name of this dish. The«classic» Pad Thai didn’t fair much better. First, the price of this dish was $ 10.99. It came in a large plastic container that would easily feed four. The amount of chicken in this dish was very generous and there were four small shrimps(one each?). I’m almost certain that the noodles were wheat rather than rice(as they should be in «proper» Pad Thai) and green onions were substituted for lemon grass. I couldn’t taste any of the flavours normally associated with this dish. No fish sauce. No lime. No lemon grass. No cilantro. Tamarind maybe, but if so very little. In short, what I got was not Pad Thai & should not be called that. Rather disappointing. On a scale of 1 – 5 Beijing Noodle House gets a 2

Best Chinese food in Grand Bend. Thai ginger beef is outstanding.
