Absolutely wonderful. Everything was delicious — the pilaf had an amazing lemon flavour and the food was filling without feeling like you’re stuffed. One problem: ordered the vegan briami and they brought it out with cheese. They apologized but that made me uneasy about the meal. Other than that, it was great. Definitely returning!

Ate there last night. Didn’t even eat the meal. It was that bad. Server did all of the apologizing but it really was not her fault. It is the kitchen, management, and whoever is in charge of quality control. Server took the meal off of the bill but the manager didn’t even have the common sense to come out and chat with me. Overview: Calamari to start. Came out looking like a dish of battered deep fried spiders. 21 of those spidery-looking things and 15 calamari rings. Greasy and not very good. For my meal, I ordered the hot turkey sandwich, side of gravy, and fries, of which there were 18 of and badly over cooked. The gravy was coagulated and cold. Inside hot turkey sandwich there was virtually no turkey. I essentially got a gravy sandwich with a turkey garnish. First time I’ve ever gone there. I don’t know if I will go back.

All hail brunch! What is my favourite meal you ask? It has to be brunch. I made my way over here on a Sunday morning with a couple of friends and to my surprise there was a buffet of breakfast goodness. It is a very busy spot but the staff aren’t phased by it. They are upbeat and quick at their jobs. I wouldn’t suggest this place if you want a quiet restaurant though because it gets very loud.

Ah, Athens. Since your original location just down the block, I have been a fan. Your potato skins, your giant Greek salads and of course, your breakfasts. This past trip to Halifax, I popped in here for breakfast. I had all of the things. Eggs, sausage, toast, pancakes and a side of pierogies. It was all delicious and appropriately priced. My only complaint is get a grip of your temperature. It was a thousand degrees in there, and though I really, really like your breakfast, I shouldn’t have to sweat for it.

bar none, the best breakfast you’re gonna get in Halifax. I usually get the Hercules; 3 eggs, ham, bacon, sausage + a goofy greek sausage, a couple perogies, toast and 2 pancakes. their omelette’s above board with heaping chunks of toppings.

After many years living in Halifax and never trying this place, I’m glad I finally did. I was in the area at lunch time one nice recent Friday and decided to check it out.(bonus, they have their own private parking lot on the side, so you don’t have to find a street spot). Greeted and seated immediately upon entering. The place is quite large, more or less divided into two separate rooms. Very relaxed family restaurant atmosphere with mostly booths, nothing fancy, but very clean and simple. The man, who I assume is a manager or owner, chatted with while I waited for the food and let me know that you can order lunch as early as 8am I believe, and breakfast any time of day. That is great for those who want one or the other, but aren’t under the ‘normal’ hours which they’d generally be served. The menu has a ton of options for even the fussiest eater. I opted for the Perogy Plate(spinach & feta perogies, Greek salad, roasted potato, rice pilaf and sour cream. 13.49). It was delicious and VERY filling to the point I didn’t know if I’d be able to walk back to the car. LOL A coworker ordered the Single Souvlaki Plate with chicken(12.99 also with Greek salad, roasted potatoes, rice pilar, tsatziki & pita). She commented that the pita was one of the freshest she’s ever had, with the only complaint that the tsaziki wasn’t as strong garlic-wise as she normally likes). Until just now when I checked their menu, I didn’t realize that my meal was served with sour cream, because I thought it was a light tsaziki at the time. It definitely had flavoring added to the sour cream which made it very good, but now I’ll have to go back and actually compare the two. I have at least a dozen things on this menu that I want to try… bring on the elastic waistband pants! :) Came back a few days later for lunch again with more co-workers and tried the Spanako-Tiropita Plate(13.49. half order of spanakopita and half of tiropita with the usual sides). This was good, but I am not really a die-hard fan of phyllo pasty to begin with, so others may like it a bit more than I did. Was just as full as the other day, but preferred the perogies. A third visit had me trying the Falafel plate, which is the same as the above two dishes, except with falafel. The 4 – 5 falafels looked hard and dry like hockey pucks, but were actually relatively soft and good. Most recent visit, tried the Greek Florentine(spinach, tomato, feta and oregano on Eggs benny, with home fries. 11.99) which was lovely. Would go back here anytime!

Great standard breakfast for the money, you can tell they really put effort behind the«homemade» claims! Hilight was the perogies and the coffee, potatoes were the best home fries I’ve had!

We decided to try out a new breakfast spot not too long ago. Having walked by Athens many times on our way to The Ardmore, we decided that it would be our choice that day. Upon entering, we noticed that there was a buffet. Being in the mood for«dippy» eggs and not being a fan of scrambled eggs, I decided against it. My other half surprised me by opting to order off of the regular menu as well. I usually have to tie the man down to keep him away from a buffet. I ordered a regular breakfast(2 eggs, toast, hash browns etc) and was so happy to see that I could choose from a variety of sides. I of course, went with the perogies. I have never met a perogie that I didn’t like. I appreciated the choice of sides as I am not a fan of your typical breakfast meat(yes, I know not liking bacon is a crime to most) My meal was wonderful. My eggs cooked to perfection, hash browns crispy and delicious, wonderful bread and of course my beautiful, plump perogies. The other half ordered the same, but with bacon. While he absolutely enjoyed his meal, he began to get buffet envy a few minutes after ordering. A lot of people were opting for the buffet options and we watched people walk by with heaping plates of eggs, tasty looking sausages, bacon, perogies, hash browns, fruit, granola, yogurt etc etc etc. It is safe to say that he will be going with the buffet next time we visit. Athens was a nice change of scenery from our regular breakfast haunts and one that has absolutely won a place in our regular rotation. The weekend we went, it was jam packed, so I think a lot of other people know the wonder of the Athens breakfast. It has been a few weeks since we have visited and are making plans to go this weekend for what will be I’m sure, another delightful breakfast.

Athens Restaurant is located at the site of the famous Hogie’s Restaurant from years gone by(also the forgettable Quincy’s), so I can’t help but feel nostalgic when I walk in to the place. My friend and I decided to come here after watching the World Curling Championships as I was made aware of a sweet deal where we could get a 3-piece meal(with drink) for just over $ 20.00. We both decided to go down this route and see if we could get a good return on our investment. We did not have to wait too long for the food, despite the restaurant being about three-quarters full on this night; the fish soup and bread arrived first and this was followed by a huge piece of chicken covered in parmesan sauce with a salad to boot. The food was excellent and we had very little left over in our stomachs for the rice pudding that came later; in fact, I could eat very little of it because of the enormity of the chicken parmesan that had been given to us. I enjoyed the overall setup of the restaurant in general; the décor is classy and the service was efficient. I would like to point out; however, that it is a bit of a trek to the washrooms as you have to take a couple of turns and then go up a flight of stairs. It had been a while since I last visited a restaurant on Quinpool Road, hopefully, it won’t be too long before I return to my old stomping grounds again.

Very disappointed. I am originally from Toronto & had many Greek restaurants to choose from. Greek town was great but so were chains like Mr Greek. I had not in 5 years had Greek food here. My gf(sorry… Fiancée… Getting used to that title lol) suggested we use a $ 10 get gifted coupon to save & go to Athena’s. We arrived yesterday & immediately saw on door that they were participating in burger week in hali & that they strongly pushed barking squirrel beer. On every table they pushed it. We happened to love it & ordered some from our server breeana. We were told they were out. Great start. Ordered other beer. It took a long time but was cold mug & tasty. We are foodies. Can eat at mcds but we love & cook & taste good food. Unfortunately our service took away. I waited & finally she brought some bread in a basket & left it. It was then that we looked at each other realized we had no cutlery, no napkins, no plates. Hungry after a half hour wait we roughed it & tore the bread while squeezing the butter packet to explode onto the bread, then spread it with the empty plastic packet. Why didn’t we ask for these things? You try to get her attention! we couldn’t! So after 45 minutes wait… Another pair, a mother & son sit down near us… It was when after 15 more minutes… A full hour that we got pissed. The other table had their lasagna dinner’s put in front of them & they dug hungrily into their food. Let’s get this straight? They arrived after we waited 45 minutes &15 min later they’re eating & we aren’t? We resorted to waving down a guy serving others(a really tall guy) we wanted our food & fresh beers(I guess they don’t want to increase the bill like I did serving in my youth?). Finally the girl came by & saw us taking to the guy & ran towards the kitchen. explaining we had concerns to the guy we waved down that we were wanting our food. She came back with our dinner’s & said«I had great timing they had just been ready for pickup». Hmm? If that’s true why did I order the chicken souvlaki dinner & find the Greek salad warm? As if it had been plated beside the chicken dinner & left under a heat lamp? Now here’s the sad thing? The food was good. Yep that’s right. My fiancée had the souvlaki wrap & only finished half. I loved my dinner with exception of the warm salad(& I mean warm, almost hot) although my food could’ve been hotter so maybe(likely) she forgot about us & it sat. I tip well. But in this case I didn’t tip a cent. However it’s rude to not tip like some do without telling server of issues. We explained everything & she admitted she hates bad service herself & understood. One final note, I had to give the get gifted coupon to her & I said I kept trying but clicking for the code didn’t work. Only finally did she inform she needs to take phone from me & enter a code she has from the restaurant. Had I been told that right away would’ve saved me trying to pull it up. Would I go back? No I had good food, well most of it, yet I wouldn’t return. Paid higher price for beer than advertised barking squirrel, had lousy service. Got out of there at 828pm. 1.5 hours to eat. She did give 10% off the food which equated to about 3 bucks. But we aren’t coming back. She tried to explain the problems on a busy kitchen. So is it kitchens fault we got bread & no plates no cutlery? Was it kitchen that prepared other table dinner in 15 minutes(different server at their table) & ours took an hour? And only after we asked for someone to look into it. Very disappointed.

Service was TERRIBLE!!! Our waitress made confusion on all the orders and was complaining all the time«we’re busy, we’re busy»… we had to wait more than 15 min to pay for our check… Not sure if I will go back there…

Great breakfast and brunch! Not too expensive and lots of different choices other than just your typical breakfast fare!(I.e falafel, perogies etc.) The only down side was the special was just a typical breakfast with coffee for the same price and was a little confusing so we did not end up getting it, but overall great food and lots of great seating so you are not cramped together! I have not been to the new location for dinner but I am excited to give it a try!

In Halifax, if you’re a family restaurant you’re basically either a chain or a Greek spot. Athens, obviously, is the latter. The last Greek holdout on Quinpool from my university days(RIP Spartan and Greek Village), Athens did move to the location that was formerly a Hoagie’s, which I somewhat regret not going to even just for a laugh. Sometimes you need some food that is laidback, approachable and easy on the wallet, but in a slightly nicer spot than a greasy spoon diner, and this is where Athens came in one night for myself and my then girlfriend, now fiancée. It’s a large spot, very clean and welcoming with lots of dark wood, cozy booths and Greek-ish nick nacks all around. Keeping it simple, I went with the lamb gyro with fries and a Greek Salad. It was a fairly quiet mid-week evening, so our plates arrived posthaste. My gyro was a good size, enough to be filling but not so much that I would need a post-dinner nap as soon as I got home. It also had fries mixed into the wrap. I’m not sure if this is to get on the fries-in-a-sandwich bandwagon, or to bulk up the sandwich so it doesn’t need as much lamb. Maybe both? Either way, it worked and was enjoyable. The sauce was nice and garlicky, and the chopped tomato and red onion added some more pop. The lamb could have used a bit more seasoning or char from the flat top to add a bit more flavour, but it wasn’t bad. The non-sandwich fries were plentiful, and somewhat on the thicker side of the French fry spectrum. Despite their size, they were still quite crispy though. I always find Greek salads to be a refreshing side with their crunchy veggies, salty hunks of feta and tangy dressing, and this one was no different. The pieces were sized perfectly as well, so that you weren’t chasing tiny pieces of lettuce and cucumber around with your fork, but also not so large as to be ungainly when trying to get it in your mouth. My girlfriend also enjoyed the olives that I didn’t want, re. all of them. Yeah, that’s right, I’m a Greek salad lover who doesn’t like olives. Was it a revelation of a meal? No. But it was a solid meal and well-rounded experience, for less than $ 15, so I’ll chalk that up as a proud A-OK.

Went for the first time this week for lunch. I had been forewarned that the service was not great, so i was prepared for it, and it was true. I ordered the chicken souvlaki platter with greek salad and fries. On a side note I would have been happier if it came in a pita instead of a wrap. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It was all very good. After 2 years of being here, it’s probably the best tzatziki I’ve had in Halifax so far.

My family went here for the breakfast buffet. Having not been here before, we didn’t know what to expect. The food and the service were good. The server kept coming back and asking us if we wanted more drinks, although we had to go up to the main counter area to pay. We waited almost ten minutes and our bill never showed up. The buffet itself is scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes(relaly big), french toast corners, toast, bagels, muffins, croissants, danish-style baked goods, a pot of chili, and another pot of soup. It really was an all-Canadian breakfast and was being replenished as needed. While the adult price for the buffet($ 11.99) is reasonable, it should include a tea/coffee drink. This was extra. Also, children are charged $ 8.99 for the buffet(regardless of their age) plus their drink. Personally, I think this is overpriced for children. My 3 year old cannot eat a regular full size dinner plate meal, so I found this price to be a bit high. He normally would just have some food off our plates if we had of just ordered a breakfast meal. I thought $ 4.99 for children under 6 would have been reasonable. Kids under 6 are not even eating half the portion that adults would eat(at least mine don’t lol). All in all, our bill came to $ 65 with drinks and tip. While it was a great meal, and we were full from it, and nothing was wrong with it, we also won’t be going back soon because of the pricetag… mainly the children’s buffet price.

I’d last been to Athens years ago(prior to its renovations) and wasn’t terribly impressed with the food or the general experience; however, my colleagues chose the venue for a group dinner and I thought I’d give the place a second chance. Pros: — Lovely job on the renovations. — Expansive menu with a wide variety of items to suit everyone’s tastes. — Decent horiatiki(you’ll have to ask specifically for it, and you’ll pay extra). Cons: — Like any business on Quinpool Road, accessing Athens is dreadful. Apparently it does have its own parking spaces, but I ended up parking on a side street. — My pork souvlaki was really dried out and rather flavorless. — Portions aren’t anything to crow about; I left feeling less than satiated. — Prices seemed a little steep, given the portion sizes. — The tiny serving of tzatziki sauce wasn’t adequate, but I didn’t want to order more because they’ll charge you for it. — Several of my colleagues ordered souvlaki wraps and noticed that they were either missing tzatziki altogether or had very, very little on them. — Service wasn’t great. I got the impression that most of the staff do not enjoy working there. A lesson learned. Athens seems to be the place to go for breakfast, but I wouldn’t recommend it for anything else.

BREAKFAST! We stopped in looking to try something new and breakfast; for $ 6 was a delicious bargain. 2 eggs, toast, homefries and choice of meat, tea/coffee or juice. I went with the Ham which was nice and meaty and my friend loved her bacon. The serving sizes were perfect, I finished my plate and didnt feel sick, The food tasted home cooked and our waitress was friendly and fun.

A lot of people really like this place, but it honestly doesn’t do anything for me. The food is good, but for the prices I have had much better greek food at smaller restaurants– even food court stands.
