Party of 3. The men in the party would give it 5 stars I’m sure for food and value. I give it a 3: I did like the place and the food and would come back, especially for a special or if I had a coupon. I give only a 3 as I didn’t like our table — service was weird — not sure if it was good or bad. They addressed you and didn’t at the same time. Talk to you but don’t look at you — I’ve never experienced this before. But it wasn’t Bad service– weird is how I describe it. I had made reservations through Open Table and it wasn’t busy — I expected a better table than what we were given. My dad wanted us moved but I just told him let’s just stay — it wasn’t that big a deal(near the restroom — not the best spot, eh?). Also, this was a birthday dinner so I was hoping to get a song or dessert and I mentioned it on the OpenTable request — maybe that’s an issue eight that app because at another dinner at another location, I mentioned food allergies and they didn’t seem to know anything about it when we got there. So back to Baton Rouge– I ordered the appy that many Unilocalers gave thumbs up, the spinach dip, it wasn’t what I expected and it was different, not bad but nothing to rave about. Since it was half off with they Unilocal check in deal, it was a good deal — I did like the nacho chips it came with. We all got rib dinners: two rib specials for $ 19 with the fries and beans — two thumbs up. The chicken and rib combo also got a two thumbs up. Big portions which I like as I take my leftovers home and it would have been two more meals for me(I ended up giving it to the meat lover who devoured it the next day). So… Yes, I’ll be back and I’ll be getting the same dish. No to the spinach dip though. We have to also dock a half star for not having IPA available — already out on a Wednesday at 7pm? Awww, how’d that happen? If you like ribs give this place a try.

We came to Baton Rouge as we were thinking STEAK and we wanted to be in downtown Halifax. Although it’s not as local or the usual family restaurant I would usually choose, I have to say I was impressed with the quality of the food and wine on offer. We took the sirloin and got to add cheese toppings or not and choose our side from a range of carbs on offer. We were also able to add a starter for $ 4 each! Our greediness took over and we said yes to the soup of the day — which tasted and looked homemade. The wine list included local NS wines. Then there was dessert, which were value for money and they tasted good — white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake and the super sweet peanut butter cheesecake. Our server was lovely and attentive, and was not pushy or fake. We would recommend a no fuss steak dinner here for a romantic meal or as a group!

Tonight was our fourth visit to Baton Rogue in the last couple of years and we’ve had nothing but great experiences! Atmosphere is great — upscale but casual, and both food and service are fantastic. We’ve sampled many things of the menu including steak, ribs, chicken, crab cakes, burgers, salads, drinks and sides and have always been delighted with our meals. Definitely recommend the pink sangria — not as sweet as most, which I enjoy. If you’ve never tried Baton Rogue Halifax, I’d suggest ignoring the negative reviews and giving it a chance!

Admittedly, I only finally came to Baton Rogue after a lack of success on other nearby patios on a Friday evening. It’s in a cool old building, but I’m never in a rush for the codified mediocrity that tends to be chain restaurants. All the steaks are in the same price range, mid-$ 20s to mid-$ 30s, so I went with the 12oz New York striploin, medium rare. It comes with seasonal veggies, and I got sweet potato fries with it for my side. The patio was mostly full and I’m not sure how busy the inside was, but it took a little bit for the food to arrive, but it wasn’t surprising given the crowd and cooking steak takes time. The veggies turned out to be grilled broccoli, cauliflower and bell peppers. Certainly nothing fancy, but they were colourful and decreased some of the guilt of eating an immense hunk of steak and fries. Said fries were your typical, from-frozen sweet potato fries, but they were pretty crispy and well seasoned, so they were fine. The main event was on par with the rest of the meal — not bad, but not impressive. The medium rare was definitely more of a medium, and it would have benefited from being cooked at a higher temperature to get some light charring for a better hot-off-the-grill flavour. It was still moist and tender, and the pepper on it wasn’t over the top. Service was friendly and checked in frequently. I might come back if in need of a patio or if they have some drink specials on, but there’s a lot of better ways to spend $ 30+ on a main course in Halifax.

My mother and I both really enjoyed our meals when we ate here together. My mother had ribs and I had steak, and we shared a bottle of wine. The food was excellent, the wine was very good(and the bartender was very quick to fill our glasses which was nice) and the service was great. The fries were realllllly good, crispy and spiced. Weird to talk about the fries but they were really good. The meal was a typical steak meal with grilled veggies on the side but I liked that they gave me zucchini(my fave) and the mushrooms I added were very good but hey I love mushrooms. My steak was a touch overcooked(more of a medium than a medium rare) but it was still so tasty I had devoured it pretty quickly nonetheless and I can enjoy steak anywhere from a rare to a medium anyway so I’m not the type who would EVER complain ha I just eat it and enjoy it anyway! It was very similar to a meal I had at the Keg, but I’d say I liked my meal at Baton Rouge better than the Keg, and it was slightly cheaper. I’d recommend this place !
