I would like to update my review to say that I was impressed that the owner reached out to me to clarify that the beans used in the burritos are fresh and soaked. While some canned beans are used in soups etc it was a misunderstanding on my part that these canned beans were used in everything. I appreciate that they take the time to use fair trade beans from South America and soak them to make burritos, I will definitely be back and will let others know about this.

A wonderful place for a scoop or two of the most delicious ice cream. A bit higher brow then I tend to go for but never the less, great variety and tasty. I haven’t tried anything else on the menu but I’m sure it’s good stuff.

After way, way too long of not trying out this north end modern day institution, my wife and I came by on a hot Halifax day to chow down on their burritos and ice cream. It’s a cozy spot, located off the beaten path for most restaurants, so it’s telling that they’ve been able to thrive where they are. There’s only a few tables inside, with a couple more outside. Most of the space is occupied by their operational needs — a cooler for their tubs of ice cream that you can buy to take home, another for buying cones, counter and the open kitchen. Their default burrito is vegetarian — rice, refried black beans, salsa and lettuce. We were going to add chicken(+$ 3) but they were out so we opted for the beef. Guacamole, cheese and sour cream are available individually or all three for a discount, so we went with that. After paying we took a table outside and were thankful for our timing as a line of several people formed right behind us, although most people were there for the weather-appropriate ice cream. Our burritos were soon brought out to us and we eagerly dug in. Like any burrito, it was a bit of a hot mess but the paper wrapper and crisp tortilla kept it well contained. Everything was a nice mix, the rice wasn’t mushy, the beef added a needed savoury element, and there was just a hint of spice to the meat or refried beans. You might want to take them up on the offer for hot sauce or peppers when you’re ordering if spice is your thing, but I just wanted a more mild experience my first time around. I’m never a fan of lettuce in burritos though, as it just turns to a flavourless mush; some other vegetable would be much better suited here. All told, it was a decent burrito but it wasn’t a life changing or particularly memorable one. We couldn’t leave without trying their house-made ice cream though, so we popped back in to get a couple cones for the road. There’s a lot of selection with unique flavours like buttered almond, Mexican chocolate and orange creamsicle, just to mention a few. I went for the Mexican chocolate, on a waffle cone of course, while my wife got the orange creamsicle. I didn’t know what exactly to expect with the Mexican chocolate, so I was pleasantly surprised by its spiciness. It wasn’t enough to be uncomfortable, but you knew it was there with each lick. The orange creamsicle was spot on, with that great combination of vanilla and orange. While the burritos were just OK, the ice cream was fantastic, and I’m definitely glad to have finally made it to Dee Dee’s. Hopefully summer will last long enough that I can head back for more ice cream, but you never know with Halifax.

Dee Dee’s is a nice local North End Halifax spot that has two things I really love Burritos and Ice Cream. It is located on the Corner of Cornwallis St and Bauer St in a lovely old historic storefront. It really does feel like you have stepped back in time when you enter the spot, very reminiscent of a 1940’s diner/ice cream parlour. Imagine that it just happens to be a bit of an ice cream parlour. The ice cream is homemade and the burritos are delicious, plus they even have some vegan options. Plus an outdoor seating area and bike parking. If you feel like having a picnic the Halifax commons are a short walk across the street or even better walk up Citadel Hill and picnic with views of the city. Plus the staff is always smiling.

Best burrito I’ve had in NS. While i was waiting for the burrito a very kind lady came up to me and insisted I try her new ice cream flavor creation. Im lactose but I ate it anyway lol, It was amazing. I would eat a tub of it and deal with the pain after, no problem. Poor service, and staff who do not care about product really bothers me, and you wont have this problem here. Thank you for great product, all the best!

A wannabe ice cream parlor. Just because it’s one of the only ice cream parlors in Halifax doesn’t make it awesome. If you’re going to make your own ice cream you need to do it right. The flavors I had we’re the simple vanilla and chocolate but they we’re melting as soon as I was passed the tub. The ice cream was very inconsistent in texture, it seemed like the egg yolks were not emulsified right because some spoonful’s tasted a bit like sugary cake batter. It was way too creamy. Not firm enough. Not refreshing. They weigh ice cream in front of you before they pass it to you. If an ice cream parlor has to be that cheap about their portion size it makes me wonder how cheap they are about the process of creating their ice cream. The price point is also very expensive for ice cream. I expect top notch cream at this dollar.

Love their ice cream. I first had DeeDee’s ice cream at their Peggy’s cove location. I ordered the grapefruit sorbet. I remembered the girl asked me if I normally ate grapefruit. She said because it really tasted like grapefruit. I told her Yes and I liked it a lot! This time I had berry+Mexican chocolate with the waffle cone at their Cornwallis street location. All came to less than $ 5, which is very reasonable in my mind. The berry flavour was very creamy. I’m not sure if I like the Mexican chocolate, even though I know many have raved about it. I can taste the cayenne, and feel the heat in the back of my throat. Personal preference aside, I will definitely recommend this place to support our local business. Next time I want to try their burritos.

My FAVOURITE spot in Halifax that no one seems to know about?! I have had the burritos, ice cream, and sorbet MANY times, and each time I swear it’s more delicious than the last! Everyone I bring here is so impressed! Organic, local, delicious, and always served with smiles — I love this place!

Oh Dee Dees… How I loved you this summer. And how I miss you! I’ve heard a lot about this place. I adore homemade ice cream, you’d be amazed by the amount of chemicals they add to store bought ice cream! So not only is the ice cream from Dee Dees better tasting, but its totally not as chemical-y as the stuff you’d get from the store. I’ve ordered several things here. I’ll review em all. a) Sausage soup. I don’t like meat all that much honestly and because of that I recently went vegetarian so I don’t think I’m that good of a judge of the soup but I really didn’t like it to be honest. The taste of sausage overwhelmed the rest of the soup but hey, maybe I just don’t like sausage. b) Grilled cheese sandwich. Delish, much better than the sausage. Tons of cheese, perfectly cooked bread, yum. c) Lemon basil sorbet. Interesting but delicious, nice and light. I bet its pretty low fat in terms of dessert. Who knew lemon and basil went so well together? d) Haskap berry ice cream. What the hell is haskap berry? I still don’t really know but it was delicious. It reminded me of raspberry, or black currants. e) Milkshakes — I had mint chocolate and chocolate. Mint chocolate one seemed a bit watered down, either the mint chocolate chip ice cream wasn’t a good choice or the woman that made it added way too much milk. The mint chocolate ice cream itself is amazing, the mint is definitely there but its subtle. The chocolate shake was delicious, not overly thick and super rich and chocolatey. I hear their burritos are amazing. I can’t wait to move back to Halifax, Dee Dees will be one of the first places I go!

I wish Dee Dee’s was closer to home. I might just have to move home closer to Dee Dee’s. I am addicted to their haskap berry ice cream and their fresh waffle cones. I love the vibe of the store — the books for the little and big kids, copies of The Coast and flyers for various local events, the relaxed neighbourhood hub feel on late summer afternoons. I am glad that Dee Dee’s is not serving massive portion sizes(a refreshing change from the general trend). I’ve had to throw out some of my ‘single’ scoop portions elsewhere because they were so ridiculously large. I usually get a single scoop at Dee Dee’s and that is plenty large enough for me. The oversizing madness has to stop.

QUICKREVIEW: Food: 4⁄5 Doesn’t have a lot of variety but what they make they make well. Décor: 3⁄5 Not a lot of seating and could be cleaner. Service:4/5 Staff was quick and pleasant. Value: 2⁄5 $ 12 for a large works chicken burrito.(Habenaro’s has better pricing) and ice cream scoops are a bit on the small side. I’m always happy to have new options close to home. This place is alright but could be improved by including some chips with burritos or reducing the price. Ice cream was good but was not impressed but the scoop size.

It seems Tara and I like to frequent the joints in the North End that offer caffeine. Dee Dee’s is no exception. They have a full espresso bar and offer the most amazing Affogatto(their house made gelato of your choice with espresso on top). What I can’t believe is that I’ve been here at least once a month for the last year and I still have yet to sample a burrito(which is hilariously the other thing Dee Dee’s is known for besides their gelato). Recently they also added grilled cheese sandwiches(made with old cheddar and bacon jam), soups and vegetarian chili to the menu. All of which sound just as appealing as they smell when you’re sipping your coffee. They don’t have a whole lot of seating room for dining in, and they will happily make up your food or drink for you take to run, but the staff at DeeDee’s are pleasant and sweet and enjoy some fun tunes if you’re hanging out for a bit. Until I get to try the good eats on the menu, I will rave about the coffee and espresso selections and definitely recommend the gelato. If you go, do me a favor and tell me how good the food is? Maybe it will inspire me to branch out…

I can’t tell you about the burritos(I’ve yet to have them). But I can tell you about the hours I’ve spent there sipping delicious Americanos, reading a good book or working on the laptop. I love Dee Dee’s. I’ve had my fair share of the ice cream during the summer months(and thank goodness the commons is close by for running off said ice cream), and it’s hard to find a better scoop of dairy goodness. I love the openness of the little café. You get to engage in conversation with the girls behind the counter as they talk about whatever comes to mind. I love that some days when I’m sitting there my eyes sting a little from the onions being prepared for the days food orders. It’s like I’m sitting in someone’s kitchen and damn if that doesn’t make me feel all warm and cozy… As for those burritos, they have to be out of this world because when I’m there, there is a never ending line of people coming in and ordering those little rolled up morsels of goodness…

I’ve just recently moved into the up and coming neighbourhood of Gottingen Street and surrounding area. While this location is fantastic in terms of value and proximity to downtown, services and amenities to support new residents are still a little lacking. On weekend mornings I’ve found myself wandering aimlessly in search of good coffee, until I discovered Dee Dees at the corner of Cornwallis and Bauer Streets. I declare that Dee Dee’s is a godsend for caffeine addicts in my under serviced neighbourhood. The café americano was fantastic, and paired with a decadent(but responsibly portioned and priced) $ 1 gluten free brownie, I was in total heaven. I’m also told that the burritos are fantastic and if appearance is any indication, the homemade ice cream looks pretty damn delicious as well. I’ll be back soon to try out the rest of the menu!

Dee Dee’s is having a hot chocolate special of the week during the winter and it is definitely worth stopping in! I’ve been addicted to their ice cream for years(they are just as good as, in my opinion better than, the haagen daz you’ll buy at sobeys). But I just realized this week that their hot chocolate can provide a happy alternative to the same boring coffee shop. This week’s special was White Chocolate Lavendar and it was super satisfying. I can tell it is going to become a weekly tradition for the winter. The shop is cute inside with a chill vibe, the workers are friendly and knowledgeable, the raw sugar condiment bottle they have on the table gets me every time, and the food(the burritos are no Burrito Jax but are always delicious) is always good. Once you find a favourite ice cream, definitely go for the tubs they sell in store or at the Farmer’s Market — it’s worth it!

Oh my, I want to live in the north end. I want to join the hipsters, lounging around in view of the Commons’ fountain as they chow down on the burritos whose scent carried me up Cornwallis Street. I loved everything about my trip to Dee Dee’s and wished I’d had room to sample a burrito in addition to my ice cream. The store itself is fairly small, with a few stools inside and a few tables outside. I love that the kitchen is completely visible — transparency at food places always warms my heart. I had trouble deciding on ice cream flavours(so many temptations!) and asked the woman behind the counter for help. She immediately dug out samples with their little metal spoons so that I could try both. Kudos on the reusable cutlery and dishes! I ended up with a waffle cone of both flavours I tried(Mexican chocolate and ginger-lemon). The ginger-lemon was wonderful — refreshing on a sunny summer day in Hali. The Mexican chocolate satisfied my chocolate craving and provided a nice kick similar to that of the ginger. I was surprised that the flavours were so intense, because the ice cream was also very creamy, which tends to mute flavour. People with peanut allergies can relax. Despite a sign on the freezer case, I was told that they have no peanuts in the store. Another major bonus is that there was tons of free, on-street parking in the middle of the day.

When Dee Dee’s moved into my neighbourhood, I knew I was in trouble. Having delicious, homemade ice cream next door was going to be a problem. What I didn’t know then was that they also serve amazing burritos, soups, chili, and whip up great hot(and cold) drinks. This shop kept me well-fed throughout the winter with their HUGE burritos(I go for the veggie with the works – it’s often enough for two people) and are now keeping me cool in the summertime with their pretty darn amazing ice cream. I’ve also been known to stop by to pick up a waffle cone for 50 cents. It’s delicious enough to enjoy on its own. The staff who work at Dee Dee’s also make it special. They are The Nicest People in Halifax™. They brighten up my day every time I go in and always offer free samples of ice cream(that is how I came to try the weirdly good Curry Cashew flavour). I look forward to spending a lot of time this summer surveying their list of flavours, gaining considerable weight, and talking about goings-on around town.
