Handsmiths is an extraordinary place. It’s almost more of a gallery or museum than a shop — certainly not your typical souvenir store. Whenever I travel — even if it’s just for a weekend, I love finding a really special treasure to take home. And, for me that often means glass or ceramic vases or some beautiful wooden object that will not only remind me of where I’ve been, but also just bring pleasure from the beauty of the peace. Local artists and artisans create the most exquisite pieces. When I was there I saw stunning wood and silver cheese trays, hand blown bowls and vases, Shaker wooden boxes and baskets, pewter and crystal pieces, not to mention fine jewellery and scarves. Although the pieces are costly — I did say it was like a museum, each one is truly spectacular. So when next you’ve hit the jackpot, or want to remember a very special occasion, this is the place to shop. And even if you don’t have much money, it’s a wonderful place to pass some time.

I really like this shop, even though it’s mostly for VERY special-occasion giftshopping. The store has beautiful handcrafted jewellery and items for the home, plus shoes, scarves, handbags and other things. Not everything is to my taste, but a lot of the items here are really unique, and you’re not likely to find them in any other shop in Halifax. Expensive, of course. But worth it sometimes for a unique handmade gift.
