So it turns out there aren’t many breakfast options in the south end at 7am in the morning. After a long night shift I thankfully remembered that Julienne’s exists, and is right next to my building. Double clutch. Julienne’s is a funky mix between counter/cafeteria service and regular waiter service; you place your order at the counter with the cook himself, grab what utensils and condiments you might need and put them on a tray, and go down the line to the cash register to pay. When your meal is cooked, someone takes your food to you. Naturally, I choose their biggest breakfast special which comes with three eggs, homefries, two slices of toast, and two pieces each of ham, bacon and sausage, and a cup of coffee. Your other standard breakfast fare is on the menu, as well as a lunch menu with assorted sandwiches, stir fries, fish and deep fried apps. After paying for my meal, I basically have my choice of seating, with a mixture of tables and booths to choose from. Taking a booth with a window view of the wonders of Fenwick Street, the cook soon brings my meal to me. While it’s a hearty size, nothing is better than mediocre, other than the homefries which, although they likely came from the freezer, are crisp and have a flavourful seasoning. The bacon is pretty thin and reminds me how Canada needs to embrace thick cut bacon like our neighbours to the south. While nothing spectacular, Julienne’s is certainly an option if you’re in the neighborhood early in the morning and you don’t have the wherewithal to cook your own breakfast.

This is a weekday only kind of place and it was worth getting up early for. This is a totally no-frills kind of place and most of the clientele look like they work in the building. It’s focus is probably on catering(judging by the catering orders being filled while I was there) and a breakfast/lunch crowd. It opens and closes early. When I lived in this neighbourhood, I’d regularly go to meet friends for diner breakfast before we went to work. You order at the counter when you first walk in, pick up cutlery when you order and self serve coffee(not really my thing). They do bring your meal to the table, so you don’t have to listen for them to call a number or anything. There’s nothing fancy about the décor, but it’s clean and has decent sized booths. The breakfast I’d have(eggs over easy, toast, extra crispy bacon) was nothing fancy, but totally enjoyable. The coffee is decent. This is a solid choice for a diner breakfast during the week(and it’s possible breakfast is served all day).
