This is one of those stores you go to when you want music or movies but don’t have anything in mind. They have a very eclectic stock(new and used) and browsing can be a real education. Actually the movie section is one of the highlights, they have a ton of cool stuff(eg used Criterions and The Holy Mountain trilogy). When I leave, it’s usually with a movie instead of music. But since the store offers a lot of new weird stuff, be prepared to spend money. Nothing ridiculous and definitely in line with what new imported vinyl’s going for in Halifax, it’s just that all the nifty things in the store will stick to you like burdocks. Go there and wander.

Love this little record store in the North End. I found this place by chance, through a random recommendation while buying a coffee. Was given a sticker, checked out the store and was hooked. They have a pretty good selection for a store this size, lots of British Indie rock stuff and if they don’t have it they will order for you. They also have a decent selection of used albums, part of the fun is going in with no expectations and searching through the racks and finding a real gem. Being in the North End it is a great place to stop by on a lazy Summer day while exploring Agricola.

Great shop. Excellent selections. No filler here. The owner was pleasant and very eager to talk music, and give some great recommendations. Very fair prices!

Perhaps my favourite record store to stop by in Halifax. The place is fairly small but it is jam packed with newly released vinyls and lots of current indie favourites as well. If you’re somebody who reads , you’ll be happy with the selection. The Facebook group is my favourite part about Obsolete Records. You can go on, ask the owner if he has a record. He’ll let you know if it’s in stock, and if it is, he’ll hold it for you behind the counter. If he doesn’t have it in, he’ll order it for you if possible. Be sure to stop by on Record Store Day as they always have a great selection of exclusive releases. Last year there were some tasty treats as well. Also check out the used bin. Sometimes you can find some real gems including recent releases for great prices. I found Divine Fits latest album there for $ 20.

For a North End vinyl shop, Obsolete is pretty much what you’d expect, and I mean that in a mostly good way. It’s small, it’s rough around the edges, and it’s packed with awesome vinyl scores ranging from vintage KISS collectibles to a nice collection of Halifax’s own performers. I’m no pro at record shopping — particularly considering the major faux-pas of walking in listening to digital pop tracks on my iPhone — but prices seemed pretty reasonable and I’d say the selection is solid. Service? Well, there was a guy in there behind a desk. That’s about all I can tell you about that.

As most of you know I have a sick obsession with vinyl, so you can only imagine my excitement when I stumbled on a new record shop last week on my morning walk. This hidden gem is Obsolete Records. Located in the North End of Halifax, Obsolete Records is a small open concept shop, decorated in lots of local art. The lay out is super clean and really well organized so it was easy to find what I was looking for. I was really impressed when I walked in to find they carry so much local music .Not only do they carry tons of local 45’s but they also have a large selection on and rare records that you may not find anywhere else. My only beef with the place is the staffing. I’m not one to give a bad review however I was the only customer in the shop, was in there for over a half hour and had several records in hand. Not once was I acknowledge or asked if I needed help finding what I was looking for. When I finally asked if they had a copy of a record I’ve been searching for, the staff behind the counter, who was reading a book acted as if it was a chore to look up the 45 on his data base. I felt that my overall experience with the place would have been far more enjoyable with a simple«Hi, can I help you with anything? « But I digress … Overall this place is pretty great and their prices are reasonable. It’s definitely a fierce competitor .let’s just hope their customer service amps up so it will be unstoppable !

Located in the North End of Halifax, Obsolete Records is a pretty bold move. Opening a record shop this day in age takes a lot of guts and I wish the owner nothing but the best. This is probably going to be an uphill battle. The store is bright and clean and feels like the kind of place you’d feel really bad about spilling a drink. Lot’s of white, the kind of place you don’t feel silly wearing sunglasses. There’s a pretty decent selection of music here and last time I checked, their website keeps a pretty updated record of what they have in stock and what they can order in for you. It’s a nice feature that can save you a trip(even though the best part of a record store is finding something you didn’t expect). Like the other reviewer, I feel like the guy working felt a little too cool for school to do things like, you know, say hello. I don’t want to be pestered when I’m shopping, but I appreciate being acknowledged when I check out a store. This is a good place and has a lot of potential. It’s new and has some kinks to work out, but will hopefully stick around to go through traditional growing pains and emerge as a solid competitor for Taz as the best vinyl joint in town.

This new north end vinyl purveyor blew its doors open on the 22nd with an in store showcase of local talent. I did not attend the shindig, but heard the festivities were groovy and schmoozy, with a touch of bop and pop to boot. I took a little jaunt in today to check out this greatly welcomed music shop. The space is stark, more gallery chic though than bland, with chalk walls as a backdrop to midnight hued music stands. The vinyl selection was grand, featuring what seemed to be mainly newbie merch and not vintage/used offerings. There were also tons of CDs of the new and used variety. I sussed out She & Him, The Buzzcocks and Television, as I enjoyed the clean crisp space. Downfall was, that the dude at the counter didn’t even acknowledge my friend and I as he yapped away on the tele. A little nod or a hand wave would have been sufficient salutation, but he didn’t even muster that — must have been a seriously serious call, maybe Obama or someone like that on the line. There’s no sign out front yet, so don’t blink or you’ll miss it. This shop is hip and happening, but loses a mark for customer service. Maybe next time we’ll be able to bump this baby up to a 4.
