Each year Opera Nova Scotia produces one opera which is usually run on two evenings. Not very much for a city of 300,000 people but better than nothing, I suppose. The problem with Opera Nova Scotia is that it is very poorly managed. I sent several emails requesting information about the(at the time) upcoming production and never received a response. I also asked to be included on their mailing list — again no response. In two months the 2011-12 production is supposed to be held at the Dalhousie Arts Centre(DAC) — but it is not listed on the DAC website yet, nor can tickets be purchased yet. DAC staff didn’t know why that was the case. Sadly, with this lack of communication, it is not surprising that turnout and revenue have been very low. Yes, arts need good management too. At Opera Nova Scotia I have yet to see any evidence of good management.
