A man and his breakfast. Wife and I were staying right down the street at a nice hotel. We were going to settle on cold granola bars purchased in Maine and currently stored in the trunk of our rental car situated caddy corner from our hotel. Alas, the man went on another breakfast route pleased with the alternate plans. He found the Tim Hortons on the waterfront. Service was swift, coffee hot, bagels soft, cream cheese on point. Wife was happy, which made the husband as well. When you think of Tim Hortons in Halifax, think of a great convenience that will be less expensive and better than your hotel breakfast.

You can always tell when someone is working and they hate their job. I don’t know why people work in customer service when they know they hate it. There are other options for you.

The service at many Tim Hortons leaves something to be desired but this is one of the worst ones in Halifax, imho. Every time I visit(which isn’t often) the place is either dirty(with tables not cleaned off and garbage on the floor), the staff bored/indifferent or they don’t have what I want. Not impressive. And kind of embarrassing since, given the location, I imagine a lot of tourists frequent this location(they always seem to have a giant line-up in the summer). I hope they don’t assume the kind of service and people that live in Halifax based on their experience here. PLEASE take my advice tourists and walk the 5 mins down to Historic Properties to Two If By Sea — you will get much better coffee and food and service, plus you will be supporting a great local company.

There’s not much wrong with the Tim Hortons brand. We’re all Canadian(well most of us) This particular location has just two issues for me. There seem to be no garbage cans anywhere. For a business located down on the waterfront(not to mention a business that creates so much) to not have proper waste receptacles is pretty silly. Although in their defense, they did not leave much room in the store for much else. The second issue is far bigger. No seating! It was bad enough as Perks. but it seems to be worse now. and more and more people are just setting camp in the back to chat. I guess I sound like a grumpy old man now. :P

I wanted to give this Tim Hortons more stars… I really did! showed up here on my dinner break for a sammy and coffee, just because i felt like a quick no frills meal. I hate to say this but I should have gone elsewhere. ohh upper Water Street Tim Horton’s with the cold Stone Creamery why do you do this to me??? you seem so upper class for Tim Hortons! I could deal with a 20 minute wait for sandwich… what I couldn’t deal with was how rude to staff was. They were actually nice to me, however most of the patrons I noticed they were incredibly rude to. Yes I understand it’s tourist season, in my job I deal with Tourists all day long. word to the wise they’re not that bad… and by the way in the summertime they pay your bills. the way I saw some the staff talk to the people in line up was horrible. my little outing to Tim Hortons on Upper Water Street will be my last one to say the least. I apologize if it seems a little bit cynical but I was really not impressed with what i witnessed here today.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the point of a franchise that while it may not be a culinary delight, one can at least expect some level of consistency? And with a ga-zillion Timmys scattered all over creation, one would assume that some standards are in place? Maybe it was just an off-day(don’t even get me started on my Metro Transit experience this morning!) but I was not happy with my Tim’s visit today. I don’t normally do Tim Hortons for lunch. I usually save this for road trip fare. Today, because I was in a rush and chilled from the cool fall weather(sigh), I decided to grab a hot soup and sandwich from the Cold Stone Creamerie and Tim Hortons on Lower Water Street near my office. At first I was all«Yes-s-s!» because I managed to beat the lunchtime line-up.(Who am I kidding. It’s ALWAYS lined up!) And when my lunch was ready in a jiffy, I thought, «Ooh…brilliant timing». However, when I sat down to take a bite it was more like, «WTF?» I can accept a slightly burnt bun. Or maybe a little heavy hand with the mayo. But otherwise, aren’t portions supposed to be controlled? There was NO chicken in my «chicken salad». OK, maybe two tiny morsels in each half but that was it. I looked up at the picture on the sign and THAT sandwich certainly had chicken in it. Not mine. Then there was the cream of mushroom soup, a standard… one would think. You can imagine my dismay when I realized all those little white things floating around weren’t mushrooms, they were balls of un-mixed flour! Gross me out. I couldn’t even complain and ask for a replacement meal because by the time I discovered all this, that non-existent line up from earlier was now completely out the door. Rats! Back at my desk now, eating stale almonds from my drawer. Boo. P. S. I gave them 2 stars as opposed to 1, just because they were at least quick. And the atmosphere isn’t bad… for a Tims.

I like ice cream any time of year, but now that the sun has decided to grace our fair, wet city, I’m even more a fan of the stuff. It’s cold sugar, why wouldn’t I like it? There’s nothing wrong with their ice cream. If you don’t know how to make up your mind, you can use the pretty pretty pictures to choose one of their signature creations. If you’re a Van Gogh type, even if your ears are still firmly attached to your head, you can indulge in your creativity by choosing a flavour and a few mix-ins to create your own sweet treat. And if ice cream is not your thing(why are you even here?), you can always get a smoothie. That said, the last three times I’ve been there, the service has been exceptionally slow. I would expect quicker service, especially from a location that is central to a busy tourist hub. I’m not sure if working with the frozen marble top gives them a perma-brain freeze, or if it’s just plain inexperience, but the staff needs to work on turnaround time. Waiting over 20 minutes in line with only a handful of people ahead of you really makes the expensive price tag sting just a little more. For the price they’re charging, I’d rather spend my time and dollars at my local ice cream stand, unless I really have the time to waste in line.

I won’t lie. I’ve been to ye olé Cold Stone many a time. The fact that there is one open 24-hours within walking distance from my house has a little something to do with that. As does the fact that they carry peanut butter flavoured ice cream. Thus? I am no stranger to the siren call of Timmy Ho’s ice cream ventures. Before getting inside the new downtown location on the waterfront, I figured it would be a solid three-star experience. I mean, how different could it be from the others? Well, pretty different. As the staff explained after letting me know that none of my favourite ‘mix-ins’ were actually available, the store owner gets to choose what candies and goodness to have on the shelves. And in this case, it’s pretty clear the owner and I would not be friends. No Snickers? That, my friend, is a TWO-STAROFFENSEAGAINSTHUMANITY. Yep — that’s how serious I am about this.

I really didn’t want to like this place… but my ice cream addiction got the best of me. I’ve tried to get off it… honestly… but the hand paddled ice cream that I can make any way I want just gets too tempting. New to the Halifax waterfront, this place is sure to be a hit with the summer tourists crowd. I was honestly hoping to see a local business go in there, but deep down I’m happy to see a Cold Stone Creamery(not the Tim Hortons… blech!) in my working-hood. I can already dream of the sunny summer days, parking my motorbike at the clock tower and enjoying a custom made ice cream –drool– The place is clean, nice outdoor seating, efficient staff, nicely lit in the day(lots of windows). Of course it’s new, so we’ll see how it fairs after a hopefully busy tourist season this summer. Wheelchair accessible, no wi-fi.

Well, a Tim Hortons was not my first choice to replace the Perks that used to be in this location(I’d hoped for Second Cup). But it does the job and replaces the often-overwhelmed Tim’s in the ferry terminal. What’s to like: * Bright and shiny and new! The space really is quite beautiful(y’know, for a Tim Hortons). * We all scream for ice cream! For those of you who like it, there’s a Cold Stone Creamery in this location. Sure to draw the crowds during the summer. * Location, location, location. Right on the boardwalk, near the ferry terminal, this spot is a guaranteed success for Tim Hortons. * Staff know what they’re doing. Some may be new but most have worked for Tim Hortons before in other locations so they’re fast and efficient(for the most part). What didn’t impress me: * The failed attempt at organization. They have clearly attempted to create a means of arranging the often-long lines that Tim Hortons see. However, it usually fails. I’ve accidentally cut in line twice. * Minimal outdoor seating. They could easily have tables for four instead of two. Sure, it creates more sidewalk but Second Cup had four seats and that worked just fine. If you’re on the waterfront, there really aren’t many other coffee options so take advantage.
