Great atmosphere with super friendly baristas and great coffee. Definitely worth your time

I have mixed feelings about the 2-star rating. For the most part I love Uncommon Grounds but the last two times I visited this location fruit flies were crawling in the treats on top of the counter. Their brownies are my favorite but fruit flies are not, so no stars today I’m afraid.

I’ve been using Unilocal for a while now, but this is my first review so bare with me. I stopped into the Uncommon Grounds location in the Public Gardens today as part of my City Harvest tour, and it was great as usual! Sugah was giving away free ice cream, who doesn’t love that! I was suprised to discover they had any left by the time I got there, but they did and they served it up with a smile! I also wanted to get an egg nog latte from Uncommon Grounds as they were on for $ 2, they were all out of egg nog but offered pumpkin spice instead and it was delicious! I love the building that Uncommon Grounds is housed in! I remember it from back in the day when it sold popcorn to feed to the ducks and I love that they have turned it into this great location with a local coffee and ice cream shop, what more could you ask for? All in all they offer great treats and great service, I can’t wait to go back!

Just walking in the building puts a smile on your face! Set in the Public Gardens, this beautiful old home houses a deadly and delicious combo: coffee house and ice cream stop! I bought a Nova Scotian made Maple Dark Chocolate Bar and it was the most delicious chocolate I have ever put in my mouth. I just discovered this place thanks to Open City, but I will be sure to go back to test some other treats!

I can’t believe it took me this long to finally take my first steps inside the Uncommon Homestead in the Public Gardens but during Open City weekend, I finally crossed this off my Halfax bucket list. For alliteration’s sake, I was going to call this a seasonal sugar shack but that would never do the building justice. It’s surprisingly roomy inside with high peaked ceilings that I didn’t expect. Very unique space and the perfect compliment to the Gardens themselves. Add on a wrap-around patio deck and you’ve got yourself a winner. It was incredibly busy while I was in(yay for UG and Sugah!) which made the lineup situation confusing — were we waiting behind ice cream customers when we just wanted a coffee — and since there were just two people manning both counters we figured we’d come back on a different day when things were a little less hectic. Definitely a sight to be seen on the Halifax scene whether you’re in it for the coffee buzz or the sugah rush!

What an awesome little spot to stop into during the months that the Public Gardens are open in the summer. I love the vibe in this place — it’s totally laid back, breezy, and even if I’m stopping in for a work lunch, there’s something about this place that makes me feel as if I’m suddenly on vacation. Oh, and having Sugah on site is a total bonus. An optimal location during the summer visits to the Public Gardens!

There are very few better ways to spend a warm spring morning than strolling through the Public Gardens with a caramel latte(or whatever your expensive yet delicious coffee-based drink of choice may be) in hand. Not only are all of Uncommon Grounds’ delicious drinks and baked goods available at this location, but Sugah ice cream is, too. Chocolate ice cream hand-paddled with fudge? Yes, please. Strawberry mixed with gummy worms? Sign me up! This location is incredibly convenient because the Public Gardens is one of my favorite spots in Halifax — a gorgeous, mellow haven in the middle of the busy downtown where you can leisurely saunter around and panic a little when ducks get too close for comfort(what, that’s just me?), find the optimal place for dress viewing during prom season, or settle down on a bench with a good book. Whatever you’re doing, it’s always going to be better if you’re sipping coffee.

I love this airy, barn inspired café located smack dab in the midst of Halifax’s gorgeous Public Gardens. This location of Uncommon Grounds really hit the nail on the head; creating an atmosphere conducive to the natural beauty of the gardens, while implementing a hint of nostalgia with their large lofty white farm house building. You can not only get all of your favorite java and tea bevies here, but also Sugah’s tasty hand paddled ice cream, perfect for a summer’s day stroll. The charming patio boasts quite a few tables, with lots of room for patrons to relax and admire the space. The staff are friendly and efficient, having harnessed their skills at being prompt as a result of the high volume of people that frequent this spot during the summer months. If you need a snack, grab a baked good at the café then head to the grassy patch at the end of the park designated for sitting and lolling about. It’s getting close to summer, which means this location will be getting ready to throw open their doors, welcoming patrons with open arms. I recommend heading in and getting a treat while on a stroll through the gardens. Bring your own mug so that you won’t waste a disposable cup and make sure not to littler anything in this lovely botanical dream locale!
