Kleider Studios joined forces with Ogilvie Film to produce a wonderful documentary about Vancouver’s downtown east side(the poorest postal code in Canada). The narrator follows a Morgan Spurlock 30 Days type of format and tries living as a homeless person on the streets of Vancouver. It starts off with him being impressed by the amazing free services available at the first shelter he finds his way to(including yoga classes), but quickly turns to the darker side as he spends more time on the streets. Perhaps the most striking images come from his visit to Insite legal injection clinic where a trained medical professional helped teach him how to shoot heroin even though he clearly was not yet an addict. Amazing footage. Scandalous. He also has an interview with Mayor Robertson, who promised during his campaign to end all homelessness. After living on the streets the narrator asks Robertson directly, «Do you really think you can end homelessness?» And the mayor responds, «Let’s be realistic.» First time I’ve heard him admit it ain’t gonna happen! Again amazing interview footage that I hope people see so they can educate themselves about local politics a bit more. They have now given the film away for free download on youtube: which I am grateful for. It made for a very enlightening hour of watching. Definitely worth the cost(free)! I look forward to more documentaries from this team…
