A bunch of us came to Sweet Mahal for dinner on our last night in Canada. We were the only patrons and the place looked clean. After some discussion, we decided to order several dishes to share amongst ourselves rather than have each person order for him/herself. Two canker sores under my upper lip made for minimal appetite, so I pretty much stuck with one of my favorites: the Lamb Saag. Other items at the table included kababs, the Goat Vindalu, the Aloo Gobhi, and some fish curry. We also got a two orders of garlic naan(2×4 huge piece for $ 2.99) and an order of rice(not so much for $ 2.99). There were two types of kabab; they were either spicy and non-spicy chicken, or non-spicy chicken and spicy goat. I tried the non-spicy chicken, which I found rather dry and tasteless. I didn’t bother trying the spicy one as it really did not look appetizing. So, I waited patiently for the lamb saag to arrive. Verdict: it was good and actually surpassed my expectations. I was impressed! I mainly worked on that dish because hey, I ordered it and it’s all I wanted to eat. It barely had any heat to it, though. I had a bite of the goat vindalu and the aloo gobhi; both were just okay. The garlic naan was very good and the rice was too salty and oily. Overall it wasn’t a bad dinner — the service, by the way, was very nice — but it reminded me that I am way overdue for a visit to my favorite Indian joint in Philly. Note: This location used to house Deep Novelties, which had a buffet; Sweet Mahal does –not– offer a buffet.
